My mother taught painting classes. She taught me to use dish liquid, after cleaning your good artist brushes, to keep them shaped. You just draw your paint brushes through a little dish liquid and shape them. Your brushes will harden, and once dipped in water they spring right back. I've always used that method to keep my brushes shaped. It also keeps any paint that is left behind in your brushes from hardening into the bristles and ferrule. I've got brushes that I've had for over 20 years that I still use, (and they still have their spring and shape,) by using dish liquid to clean and shape them.

Be sure to use Dawn dish soap, specifically. It's formulated to cut grease (oil) and that is a must with oil paint but it's also very gentle and thorough when cleansing other paint types and painting messes (mediums etc.) that we make.

You never disappoint, you have a very unique way of involving the beginner to make painting a fun and relatively easy project. Thank you for being so easy to follow by being humble enough to show what mistakes we make are the same as you make but not to fret, just paint your way out of them. That is very comforting for those that may become frustrated at not being able to copy what you achieve by you pointing out that each person develop their own techniques and style by trial and error and watching these videos and learning from them. Practice, practice and more practice along with freedom of experimenting goes a long way in developing the confidence to make mistakes but learn from them. It has helped me tremendously, so thank you again and again.

I am a painting noob. This video was a great help as I have been inundated with brushes during my research. They way you covered these brushes use and care made it easy for me to understand. Your voice is pleasant and easy to listen to. So Thank You, I will check out any other videos you have done. My plan is to learn landscape painting. I used to work with glass both stained glass and warm glass (fusing glass in a kiln). My favorite panels were of landscapes. Landscapes are much harder with warm glass technique because instead of loading a brush with powdered glass you have to lay the colored glass powder on the back glass panel and push the powder into shape. Because of this you can't lay all the glass down at once. You have to do it in layers fusing each layer before you add the next layer. This could easily require 8 to 15 layers per panel.

I'm new to painting during an ' inspirational block' in my photography and this video is exactly what I've been looking for.
Knowing what brushes to use for the right job and how to use them is like knowing how to set up your camera for quality shots. Anyone can point a camera and take a photo just as anyone can pick up a brush with some paint and create something.....but it's all about knowing your tools and using them properly to their full potential that gets results which you certainly put across in your video.

So many videos on painting are all about different steps, and assume different things, but this is really interesting, because it's where the most basic of practice should be and should start: paint handling, and internalized as best you can, so you can move onto further stuff. Great! I can see why so many people despair and rush to digital, when maybe they would benefit from more instruction like this as a primer, and I'm mainly talking about myself. Thanks!

Bearly found your channel as the painting of the raven popped up on my recommendations, I've been trying to make the transition I usually paint on bottles but wanted to start painting on canvases now. This video here is what I needed to watch I've learned so much from this I'am going to try and paint on canvases to see how I do. Thank you so much for the advice.

I rarely comment on any video, but I felt compelled to this time. I learned a great deal from this video, and I can't express enough how important that is to me. My soul mate and I used to go to Paint Nite. We loved it. I've taken up painting at home since she passed away, and she passed on the day that this video was published. Thank you so much for helping learn more about my latest passion and coping mechanism. I've enjoyed it very much, and your tips are going to help me enjoy it more. And I'm getting an angle brush ASAP.

Another great video Jane. It really helps seeing the up close video. I do have a tendency to wipe most of the water off my brush before I dip it in the paint so I am going to try your technic and hopefully my paint will be smoother. Thanks
