I'll be demonstrating:
• A 1-inch flat brush for the background. How to lay paint down, and how to blend 2 colors together

I know this is an older video but this is exactly what I was looking for as a total beginner! THANK YOU
My mother taught painting classes. She taught me to use dish liquid, after cleaning your good artist brushes, to keep them shaped. You just draw your paint brushes through a little dish liquid and shape them. Your brushes will harden, and once dipped in water they spring right back. I've always used that method to keep my brushes shaped. It also keeps any paint that is left behind in your brushes from hardening into the bristles and ferrule. I've got brushes that I've had for over 20 years that I still use, (and they still have their spring and shape,) by using dish liquid to clean and shape them.
That's a wonderful tip, Debbie! I'll have to try it out. Thank you for sharing :D
Thankyou for sharing this. I am a beginner and am learning from watching videos on youtube. That sounds like a genius idea and makes perfect sense to me! The best advice I have seen. I can't wait to try this, so I'm going to go paint something!!
I used to paint with oil and water color. About 50 years ago. I was in high school. Lol I am dating myself. But I have wanted to get back into painting again. Hopefully I haven't forgotten anything. I loved this video it will help me get back into painting
@@lindasmela7744 - Ditto! Good luck!
Be sure to use Dawn dish soap, specifically. It's formulated to cut grease (oil) and that is a must with oil paint but it's also very gentle and thorough when cleansing other paint types and painting messes (mediums etc.) that we make.
You never disappoint, you have a very unique way of involving the beginner to make painting a fun and relatively easy project. Thank you for being so easy to follow by being humble enough to show what mistakes we make are the same as you make but not to fret, just paint your way out of them. That is very comforting for those that may become frustrated at not being able to copy what you achieve by you pointing out that each person develop their own techniques and style by trial and error and watching these videos and learning from them. Practice, practice and more practice along with freedom of experimenting goes a long way in developing the confidence to make mistakes but learn from them. It has helped me tremendously, so thank you again and again.
I appreciate you making a video like this. Even though I’m in my 50s I have never really painted before unless you include the bathroom that I painted. Your descriptions are well covered with a clear speaking voice. I look forward to watching more of your videos
Thank you for doing a video on the basic use of and care of brushes. I'm not a raw beginner but I still have a lot to learn _ or re-learn in my case. Thanks for covering the basics in a very clear straight forward way.
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
I am a painting noob. This video was a great help as I have been inundated with brushes during my research. They way you covered these brushes use and care made it easy for me to understand. Your voice is pleasant and easy to listen to. So Thank You, I will check out any other videos you have done. My plan is to learn landscape painting. I used to work with glass both stained glass and warm glass (fusing glass in a kiln). My favorite panels were of landscapes. Landscapes are much harder with warm glass technique because instead of loading a brush with powdered glass you have to lay the colored glass powder on the back glass panel and push the powder into shape. Because of this you can't lay all the glass down at once. You have to do it in layers fusing each layer before you add the next layer. This could easily require 8 to 15 layers per panel.
I'm new to painting and I've been struggling with the finer lines using the angle and round brushes. Thanks so much for this video, you are so helpful and encouraging!
Thank you, Katrina! I'm so glad I could help you out!! Keep it up. Everything gets better with practice :)
As a beginning artist I found this video really useful. Thank you for the wonderful tips.
You are an EXCELLENT teacher! I've been painting for less than 3 weeks now and have already learned soooo much from you! Thank you for being cool and calm when explaining the 'whys' and the 'hows' to do things! 💕
+mzbrazell Aw, I'm so glad I could help you out! I can't wait to see more paintings from you
Thank you so much for this tutorial! At the age of 59, I began panting rocks but became interested in acrylic canvas panting. I've gotten nowhere in a year and realized that part of my issue is how to manipulate the brushes. I just couldn't get the pressure if my hand right and didn't know which brush to use. This helped so much! Thanks again!
I have watched many videos for beginning artists, but you are by far the best teacher!! You take time to explain everything, which is exactly what beginning artists need. I love that your videos focus on a few things at a time and are short. Allows people to practise each lesson. You rock, Jane!!
The metal thingy is a ferrule.
You saved the lives of my brushes, I've always mashed them down. Thanks!
+Kevin Zabbo Thanks, Kevin! Glad I could save your brushes. Mashing is mean, just remember that, lol.
I was tought it was called the hilt but different names in different places I like your version better
Thank you for taking the time to show each brush technique. I especially appreciate knowing the amount of water with each brush and loading properly with paint. Yes, I will be practicing.
You are an inspiration to me. I have painted a long time but have learnt more watching you than anywhere else. no teachers liked my way of painting so I left. now i paint my way following your tutorials.fantastic and clear and very doable"""I think thats a word. thank you for inspiring me to paint again and have faith in my art work.I am a gestural painter love big strokes and big canvases/. thank you
Thanks Jane, this is the only video that has addressed cleaning and shaping of brushes. I'm guilty of banging mine on the bottom of the jar but will never do it again. Thanks again for teaching not only how to paint but how to care for our equipment.❤️
You're so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful and that I could help save a few brushes 😊
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have been painting for several year, mostly self taught and watching others paint. I never knew how to clean my brushes properly or how to load them correctly to get enough paint. Like you I discovered the angled brush late in my work, and it is probably my favorite brush. This video is invaluable to the novice and to the seasoned painter who never learned how to take care of their brushes!
I am learning how to take better care of painting brushes Thank you for teaching me how to take care of them from now on because they are expensive I’ve always enjoy Your teachings You’ve helped me a lot because I am deaf as I am learning the hard way but each time I watch your teaching so I am improving THANK YOU GOD BLESS YOU 🎨👵🏼🤟🏻
Thank you Jane. This was very very helpful!! As a beginner I had no idea how to paint with brushes but I agree with you that the angle brush is hard to beat!!
You are a great teacher. You explain things extremely well, demonstrate them. I always find your videos super useful and to the point. No wasted time. I really appreciate what you’re doing. Thank you for the joy you’re iimparting to me with your knowledge.
Thanks Jane! I really enjoy practicing with you and feel these technique tutorials have a lot to offer - especially when I don't have time for a full painting but just want to work on my skills with no commitment to a finished piece.
Thank you so much, Angel! I'm so glad I can help you!! Thank you for your nice comment
The last time I painted was 1972 using oils of course. I'm getting ready to resume the hobby and I am enjoying your videos. Thank you so much.

Girl....you ROCK! Love, love, love the paintings, tips and tricks you tutor.
I have never painted "pictures" in my life. I have painted walls, furniture etc. I love the result of seeing the finished product, but I'm not able to paint walls as much any more due to age. lol. however, I have watched your tutorials and got the courage to paint along. The first one I did was your summer flowers on an old fence. I was so amazed that by following your advice and technique It actually turned out looking "pretty good" since then I have painted with several of your tutorial. I'm such a fan. You have converted me to a painter. Thanks so much to my new passion.
I am learning so much from you. Your real-time pace makes it much easier for me to understand and to imagine how I will put your recommendations to practice! Thank you!
More great advice! Thank you.... Between you and Cinnamon, I'm really learning. 👍👏😀 keep up the great work & videos, they're really helpful. Thanks again, peace ✌ 😁
really enjoyed you going the extra mile to teach us about brush cleaning and techniques, I am just starting to learn about acrylic, I use to do oils, and I really learned a lot here. I also pick up what a good teacher you are and caring about your viewers as well, definitely a sign of an excellent teacher thank you thank you thank you

Hey Jane , I use your painting techniques o and I stood first in Painting Competition ! ThAnK YoU sooooooo MucH .....!!!
Wonderful!! Congrats :D
Enjoy your tutorials and helpful hints, thanks
Bob
Thank you so much for explaining how you use water with the brush and paint. I've been searchimg for ages trying to find the right way to do this!
You are such a wonderful teacher! I love watching your videos. You honestly make me feel like I can paint anything. I didn't have the proper tools but I painted your holiday bird scene, posted it on Facebook (gave you complete credit for the painting of course) and still got lots of compliments on it! Thank you so much Jane :)
+Kyla Briggs Yay!!! Thank you so much, Kyla
Jane, this is so useful. I have viewed many of your videos during the past month or so. My goal is to view all the videos you have created. I am very close to the goal. This is a very helpful video. I know that you cover many of these techniques during your painting sessions. That is great, but to have them all here in one video is fantastic. Great work. Thanks for what you do.
Thank you!!! That's exactly why I did this. I will probably do an updated one sometime soon :)
Hi Jane, thank you so much for explaining various brush techniques. I have all three of the brushes you showed us how to use. I avoided the round and angle brush as I didn't know how to use either of them. So thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated. Thank you from Canada.
+Shavauna Ronan Thank you, Shavauna! I'm glad it was helpful. I hope the angle brush becomes your new favorite :D
I realize that this video is now a few years old but the information I have learned here in those 20 minutes was just spot on and really deserved a well done & a thank you comment.
I'm new to painting during an ' inspirational block' in my photography and this video is exactly what I've been looking for.
Knowing what brushes to use for the right job and how to use them is like knowing how to set up your camera for quality shots. Anyone can point a camera and take a photo just as anyone can pick up a brush with some paint and create something.....but it's all about knowing your tools and using them properly to their full potential that gets results which you certainly put across in your video.
Thank you so much and I look forward to learning more from your videos. Brilliant!!
I'm so happy this was useful for you! Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment 💛
I just learned more in 20 minutes from this video, than I learned during my first 2 hour class that I paid for. THANK YOU !!! I can not wait to watch more of your videos.
this is the most helpful video I have found as someone who is switching mediums, I'm switching from airbrush to actual brushes. I love all your videos, immensely helpful.
+Charles Nunley Thank you, Charles!! I'm so glad you like them. Thanks for watching :D
You are such a good teacher these tips are so helpful. I just completed my first painting I can honestly say I was happy with and it was following your tutorial of the walk in the rain. You have made me believe I can do it thank you.
I'm so glad to hear it, Cathy! Congrats on your first painting, friend! Here's to many more 💛
Thank you so much Jane for this tutorial video. It helps me to know a lot about paintings, and handling my materials.
Have a good evening...xxx
Thank you, Telly! I'm so glad it was helpful for you. Have a great evening yourself :D
Best camera work and concise instruction I've seen on any art video, as a beginner I was extremely impressed. Great job. Now, to learn about painting fur!
You're such an amazing artist! I discovered your channel last night and I've been binge watching ever since trying to soak up as much information on painting as I can! I hope I can become a artist as great as you one day!
You're so sweet. Thank you so much, Nyah!!
So many videos on painting are all about different steps, and assume different things, but this is really interesting, because it's where the most basic of practice should be and should start: paint handling, and internalized as best you can, so you can move onto further stuff. Great! I can see why so many people despair and rush to digital, when maybe they would benefit from more instruction like this as a primer, and I'm mainly talking about myself. Thanks!
You're so welcome, Scott! And thank you for your thoughtful comment!
Just started painting and this video was Godsend. For the life of me I couldn't understand how to use the angle brush. Your explanation and example cleared it all up. Thank you!
Thank you!Now I know why my brushes are a mess!Haha!I am going to start taking better care of them!Your video's are so helpful!
+allypbnn Yay!!! Thank you!
You are my favourite painting teacher, I love your paintings, painting tutorials and techniques!!!! Your voice
is so relaxing when your teaching, thanks you so much for taking the time!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I have watched countless step by step videos of acrylic painting tutorials. Your videos are so informative and soooo easy to follow along with. I have learned so much. So far I have watched 5 or 6 of your videos not including this one, and I have learned something from each one. This is the fist time I have ever commented on any videos. You do a great job!!
HI Jane , after watching your video I realized it's not Always the brush its about knowing how to us the brush . Thank you for your tutorial it was a great help . I went through my stash of brushes and actually found a couple of brushes I liked. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge with us thirsty painters . Lol
+Helen DeNoia Exactly!! I'm so glad this was helpful to you, Helen :D Thank you for watching
Hi! Just getting started with “dabbling” with Acrylics! Found your video especially helpful, as it answered several questions I would have to have tried various methods to find out what you’ve told me in just a few minutes!! Every time I can save is precious at 72 years old……thanks again. WELL DONE.

Many thanks for this great tutorial! Your presentation was perfect, and I am so appreciative of this valuable information about the brushes. You are super talented and I feel blessed that you are willing to share your knowledge with others.
I second the previous comment. I've been playing around with 'DIY chalk paint' a little on my channel, and I now want to paint my first canvas and show others that they can do it too. I did want to know a few visits first and this helped immensely thank you. Certainly wasn't basic either.
Thank you. I learned many things from this video. Well worth the 20 minutes to watch it. Good teacher!

+Dedra Buchanan Thank you so much, Dedra! I didn't used to be able to paint trees the way I do. Like you said, it's all in practice! Keep at it
Bearly found your channel as the painting of the raven popped up on my recommendations, I've been trying to make the transition I usually paint on bottles but wanted to start painting on canvases now. This video here is what I needed to watch I've learned so much from this I'am going to try and paint on canvases to see how I do. Thank you so much for the advice.
You explain things very well and are very clear. Thank you.

Thank you, great tips. I watch you a lot and love your paintings
Great tips for beginners like me. This is really helpful. I love your communication style.
I rarely comment on any video, but I felt compelled to this time. I learned a great deal from this video, and I can't express enough how important that is to me. My soul mate and I used to go to Paint Nite. We loved it. I've taken up painting at home since she passed away, and she passed on the day that this video was published. Thank you so much for helping learn more about my latest passion and coping mechanism. I've enjoyed it very much, and your tips are going to help me enjoy it more. And I'm getting an angle brush ASAP.
Oh, Will, I'm so sorry to hear that
Thank you for explaining so well, I'm an absolute beginner and I find these tips valuable.
Another great video Jane. It really helps seeing the up close video. I do have a tendency to wipe most of the water off my brush before I dip it in the paint so I am going to try your technic and hopefully my paint will be smoother. Thanks
+Cathy Tully Thanks, Cathy! Glad I could help again :D
You explain and demonstrate so clearly. No wonder I've ruined so many brushes! Thank you so much!!!
You're so welcome! I'm glad I could help save your poor brushes :)
