  • In this video I review the Black Hunter Replacement Limbs by Sino-art. These are 55 pound limbs I had planned on using on an upcoming Elk hunt later this year. That is until the Limbs had a completely delaminated toward the end of the video.

Wow! That is crazy that it came apart so easily and quickly ... that is kind of scary to think at any time a limb could explode! Thank God you were not hurt!

Whoa! Tough break. Glad to know that no injuries were sustained. I have a 2 year old 40# Black Hunter hybrid and love it save a touch of stacking at my 30.5" draw length. Wish they made accessory limbs designed specifically for us lanky overdraw types.
Regarding your initial draw weight shock when transitioning to traditional archery; I recently saw a video uploaded by a large German fellow shooting his new Shrew Extreme @ #111. He was getting 300 fps plus out of that beast. Not sure I could even muster enough strength to even string it with a good bow stringer, much less draw it back more than a couple of inches past brace height.

Love watching all your videos, most of all, you show folks that you DO NOT have to spend 1200 dollars for a custom bow to get into traditional archery, this is very important, many of todays hunting shows make it sound like you have to spend thousands of dollars to get into hunting with archery gear, and that is not true. Yes I have both custom gear and mass produced bows as well, and I have found out you DO NOT need a custom bow to enjoy traditional archery. But the biggest mistake you can make is to over bow yourself. If you shooting more weight than you can handle you will never learn to shoot instinctive. So get a cheaper low poundage bow with a weight you can shoot easily and then you can consider buying a custom bow. But you don’t need one to be a traditional archer.

I had a very similar experience, the top limb of my 35lb. black hunter longbow(brandless, from one of my local alibaba-type stores) failed at the point where the two bamboo bits meet the wood. The wood delaminated but the fiberglass held so it just collapsed on me, no explosion or anything bad, thankfully. Have since replaced it and gone up in weight and so far, no issues. Luck of the draw when you're ordering online at these brandless places. Mandarin Duck doesn't deliver to my country, oddly.
Anyway, I'm glad you're not hurt. Love watching your vids, as well as your little collab. with Ron (those wood arrows are great!).

One important thing out of several is to always use heavy arrows, not light ones and not the minimum weight either. These cheap bows are poorly made. Light arrows and fast flight strings act on them as if they're dry fired. I'm not suggesting you used either or both of these but these bows are simply very poorly made. They look good but aren't strong.

You'll want your arrow to be 8-10 grains per pound of draw weight is recommended for the black hunter specifically.

  • @markoharoldoronearmedpoohb7816

Bamboo laminations in the limbs can be a finicky thing, Bamboo needs a lot of roughing up to glue right, and roughing up can cause failure do to stringing of the wood, also bamboo is not very porous to suck up glue, I’ve always shied away from Bamboo laminations!

I ordered the Splinter ILF limbs from Mandarin Duck and they arrived delaminated. Nothing cracked, but the glas is peeled of. Not sure, if they got sloppy with thier QC. Thats a bit disappointing. I have and use the Black Hunter a lot. No issues so far. I like this bow, thats why i odered the Splinter Limbs for the Viper. Let´s see, if i get a refund or another set of limbs...

The guy at the store made feel bad and talked me into over bowing myself. He told me "women and kids shoot 30lb-40lb bows, men should shoot 50lb or higher." It was my first bow, needless to say I struggled. Thankfully it was a takedown bow, so I ordered 40lb limbs and the difference was amazing. I could actually think about form instead of just struggling to pull the bow back.

Most likely it was those 6 grains per pound arrows you shot for speed that did it. It was like a dry fire, almost.
Wow, at the time of this video you only had two year’s experience shooting trad. That explains a lot! Add another 2 years to now making four. Heck I’ve got almost double that just shooting Black Hunter TD longbows let alone another 5+ decades shooting trad. And you are the expert.

Yikes! I have been hesitant to shoot my 55lb Bear Montana lately fearing the higher poundage is stressing the limbs too much. Shane Pitzer showed me a picture of his 50lb Montana upper limb completely broken all the way through. Man, so glad you walked away from that unscathed. I was looking at a Sino Art BH longbow the other day on Amazon coincidentally. I will send you an email soon, been a busy week, trying to catch my breath. Thanks for the video, be well brother!

Glad you didn't get hurt in that failure. If the gluing was not done well, and firing those lightweight arrows probably put a lot of shock into the limbs, could have been a perfect storm. I had a 50# Bear Montana longbow that blew up on me at full draw (32" DL), broke coompletely in half at the upper end of the riser. I got a few cuts/bruises on my head and face but nothing serious. It happened so fast I didn't even know what was happening.

@@HandyL When mine failed, I googled around and saw a couple other examples of the same. Bow is probably safe enough for the typical 28" DL, but for longer DL's, I think it is kind of sketchy. When mine let go, it was a loud 'BANG', sounded similar to a pistol going off. I felt stuff hitting me, and didn't even grasp what was happening in that instant.

Did you have to change your shorts lol. Do you think it had anything to do with shooting too light weight of an arrow, kind of like dry firing in a sense. Which could have started a light fracture and then with your humidity and heat there in Florida, while shooting and working the limbs could have softened or warned up the glue even. I guess there could be a lot of variables even just a manufacturing defect. But most importantly you were not hurt. Take care and God bless

It's the string! That's what did the limb! You can't use a Flemish twist or fast flight on a bow that doesn't have reinforced limb tips! Chalk that one up to user error.

Your limb failure... I donno... I had a bad experience with a limb protector.. Like a added weight to the lower limb. I shoot without one now. My bows preform better without them. If your just a little bit careful and aware... with your gear.. you shouldn't need a lower limb protector. To each his own I suppose. I've seen limb failure on some of those cheap limbs... target recurves... I saw 1 on a BearPaw MoHawk recurve. Some might say... you get what you pay for... But... I'd bet money your correct about why it came apart. Your next limbs... will prob. NEVER come apart.
Good it did I guess WHEN it did. Would have been terrible if it had happened on your hunt. I surely like the Black Hunter... but I have 2 bows now... Hybrid Longbows... I'm satisfied with... a BearPaw MoHawk Hybrid longbow and a Bear Archery AuSable 64" Hybrid LBow. I also have a ILF riser from Lancaster ... the Titan 3 in 19"... I plan to purchase some Longbow limbs for that soon. They have some Carbon foam ones... or maybe from 3 rivers... the Das X3 limbs.. you can get those in ILF also. Anyways... good luck to you.. happy hunting. OH... I wanted to mention the HECS Suit. You need a HECS suit. They are a little spendy @ $250 ...maybe/ish. But they hide your electric signature... that animals can see. Ever seen how deer will stair at hunters... wearing the best cammo money can buy? They stair a hole in them.. Well with the HECS suit... you don't look like something that's alive. They can't see your electric signature.. you look... just like another bush. They don't bolt or run from other trees & bushes that move with the wind... and You can wear your HECS suit under your clothing or in hot weather... wear it as outer clothing... IT hides you totally. You should check them out... they have a website. HECS
