@@aaronrose3110 I haven't seen it but actors are a special breed who make a living pretending to be someone else. The characters they play may or may not be similar to themselves. Usually it is the gays who play straight characters but in this case it is a straight playing gay.
Funnily enough Kubrick didn’t want him for the role initially. I forget the exact story, but they already had somebody signed on to play the part but Ermy wanted it so bad that he kept pestering Kubrick about it constantly. If I remember correctly, the original actor didn’t show up one day so Ermy stepped in and showed them that nobody else could play the role as good as he could
@space_men_8675 first part is true, but how he actually got the part is Ermy knew Kubrick was watching so he planned on impressing Kubrick so much, that he would have no choice but hire him for the role, and it worked. The actor who was supposed to play the di ended up playing the helicopter gunner
R Lee Ermey simply had the voice of America's favorite senior NCO. If it wasn't for seeing his work beforehand, I'd have never been ready to enlist to begin with. I'd trained my body for a year before seeking a recruiter.
He choppered in to Al Kut, after we took the airfield. He filmed us getting rid of Iraqi ordinance. When he came into the hangar, he started chewing us out like FMJ. I'll never forget that. It was maybe 2 months after the invasion.
The old Gunny does not seem to be struggling with his feminine side .
Dude was confident enough to share a kiss on screen with Jack Black, he didn't have any struggle with his masculinity as far as I could tell.

Stanley Kubrick knew what he was doing hiring this guy

@@space_men_8675yea I saw a video of him retelling that story not too long ago

RIP R. Lee Ermy. ❤
To add clarity, R. Lee Ermey wasn't killed by Vincent d'Onofrio.

Gunny was straight black & white, no grey with him, Rip Sir you’ve earned it 👌👍
Because he was hard, you would not like him but there was no racial bigotry.
@@TheGodYouWishYouKnew he made you a better person after meeting him regardless of race 👍
I was sending these boys to fight. Not to die.
One for the commandant! And one for the corps! Pull! Pull! *private drops from pullup bar* I guess the corps don't get theirs.
I miss this guy. One of my favorite actors of all time. Highly overlooked and underrated.
Great motivator!
I still cant believe they snubbed him at the Oscar's. No mention in memoriam when he passed. So disrespectful, especially to a man who served.
Liberals....
Drill Instructors most definitely have that skill.
R.lee ermy ended up making a lot of great movies
How on earth he didn’t win an Oscar is ridiculous
I wish Gunny would come back to life to scream at me and IT me on the quarter deck
Did Gunny ever have to be concerned with DEI in his Corps ? I think not!!!!
Is that you John Wayne? Is this me?
Spoiler alert , that guy kills him self
Who?
💘💘💘
We did 20
And what happened to you in the movie?
In all fairness Private Pyle climbs obstacles like old people fuck too
he had a soft spot for some fellas (fellas with arched backs)
