  • Vampire the Masquerade 5th edition (V5) is a tabletop RPG by White Wolf, published in 2018. It carries the franchise started in 1991 with relatively easy rules, and blends lore with game mechanics in some interesting ways.

I used to play 1st edition back in the days. A year ago, I introduced my kids to D&D ("hey dad, its like an Xbox game but where you get to decide." ) and they absolutely loved it. I am wondering if the feel is as "adult" as it was back then or have they toned it down a little towards. I felt back then that too much of the game was about being sorry for yourself and it was kinda depressing.

Sinmaan I didn’t get a sense of imposed self-pity from the book, but the authors do stress another negative mental burden: addiction. It’s hammered on over and over in the mechanics. Probably a good tool to teach older kids about drugs or something. Younger kids, I’m not sure what the merits would be.

2:53 Ehh... no. Cain was cursed by God with eternal life in Darkness. Cained learned how to embrace others and inflict the curse upon them to not suffer the loneliness. This second generation of vampires had 13 childer, which slaughtered their sires eventually and were cursed by caine with their clan banes.
3:34 Clans don't fall into sects. There are clans and sects. Clans are determined by your blood, sects by your sociopolitical standing. Each clan can theoretically be present in any sect, yet there are preferences, stereotypes and resentments that result in a preference and a nominal membership in the camarilla.
4:05 Lasombra joined the Camarilla (Chicago by Night). Tzimisce are not yet discussed, but will most likely focus around a fraction called the Old Clan Tzimisce in the future. Giovanni are not extinct, they are independent and formed the Hecata with the remnants of other necromantic bloodlines. Ravnos and Salubri are nearly extinct. Banu Haqim and the Ashirra joined the ranks of the camarilla and Ministry/Setites are rebranding and were rejected by the Camarilla and joined the ranks of Anarchs.

Actually the archangles cursed Cain with weaknesses specific to vampires to give humanity a chance. After being banished to the land of Nod for killing his brother Abel, Cain was AWAKENED (made him a mage, super OP guys in WoD) by Lilith, which means immortality was alrady on the table along with limitless power. The archangles came to bring Cain back to the light and make him repent, but he didnt , so they gave him vulnerability to fire, sun, and eventually, for having rejected God's forgiveness and his brother Abel's forgiveness, thirst for blood, the hatred and jealousy of his progeny and everything they would build or love, would crumble into ruin. Then he cried with tears of blood which he gathered into a bowl and drank it. Thats when he became a vampire. Then the forth, the archangel of mercy, gave him a path back to the light. Cain learned from demons how to create other vampires, and he made 3 others, and those 3 made 13 others, and those 13 made the clans. It could be that some of those vampires were already his human progeny before he or they became vampires.

Maybe as a small remark or two.
The Anarchs are not usually for kindred rule over humans or mortals, but rather for a kindred society (or rather society) that aren't the neo-feudal mold of the Camarilla.
    Well, and the Banu-Haqim, Ministry, Giovanni/Hecata and Ravnos are not that much extinct or far off, as just not the topic of the book ^^;

After the whole CCP/White Wolf debacle, former White Wolf developers (particularly Rich Thomas) left and formed Onyx Path publishing. They purchased the rights to former White Wolf properties Scion, The Trinity Continuum and Scarred Lands and are the licensed publisher for Chronicles Of Darkness (basically, the line that Vampire The Requiem belongs to), Exalted and alot of the extra content for the mainline World Of Darkness (with White Wolf approval, of course). They are my current favorite developer in the business, mostly because of how interactive and transparent they are with their fans/customers. They have a youtube channel run by Matthew Dawkins (The Gentleman Gamer on youtube, and also one of the writers of V5), a weekly podcast called "The Onyx Pathcast", and regularly scheduled content on their Twitch channel (including Actual Plays of their games, "behind the screen" commentary on planning for their games, and discussions on different aspects of the development process).
Outside of the World Of Darkness, I also played alot of the first editions of Trinity Continuum: Aberrant (near-future Superpowers game) and Scion (modern adventures as sons and daughters of mythological deities in a war against the spawn of the ancient titans, with the possibility of eventually attaining godhood yourself) as a teenager and young adult.
Onyx Path has put out the first couple of core books for Scion 2nd Edition (Origin and Hero), as well as a meaty Companion, and I highly recommend them, if you've never tried them! It's my favorite setting of theirs for sure.

You have minor mistakes in the video: Cain did not have 3 children and those another 13 that were cursed by God... Caine was curse by god with Vampirism, and he made 3 companions who in turn made 13 vampires. This 13 killed the 3 progenitors and Caine cursed them and left (giving them the banes of each clan). So the 13 are the founders of each clan.
Secondly, the Anarchs do not want to rule openly over mortals. Those are the Sabbat. The Anarchs want to follow the masquerade rule, stay in the shadows, but want equality no matter generation or clan. In the camarilla, the order is feudal like. Older kindred rule over younger kindred. Each clan has a primogen, or ruler etc... so there is a pyramid of power in the Camarilla. Anarchs reject that.

I agree, it's a bit jarring to be told over and over how it's fiction-first but also be loaded with rules. The default assumption is that if there are rules written on the page, they are important enough to really try to follow.

The system is very flexible if you don't like something you can remove it or change it easily IMO. They kinda hint at this but they dont really commit to it sadly enough, except for their poorly put together advanced rules section. The editing of the book is maybe not the worst of all the editions but its definitely not the best either. The rules are hard to read even for someone who has prior experience with the earlier editions.

Nice review! I love VtM . I'm one those 90s goth edge lords that's been playing or awhile now. One of my favorite settings. Hands down my favorite vampire fiction. VtM, and World of Darkness in general, is so good for roleplay! Some of my best stories come from this game. And, 5e is good times. Requiem was such a disaster, though. But, thankfully during that drought you could still print-on-demand old world of darkness. My only critique of the 5e book is that you are paying for like five wasted pages on table etiquette. Not a fan of this trend lately- I feel it's up to every group to decide their own personal boundaries. And "don't be a jerk" at the table isn't some nuanced concept that we need to get up on podiums and lecture each other over constantly. VtM is also best when it's personal horror and without being just a little uncomfortable there is no conflict or tension. Anyhow, aside from that nitpick it's a worthwhile investment.

    • @DaveThaumavore
      @DaveThaumavore  Před 4 lety +6

Yeah, I noticed a way higher than average number of words dedicated to table etiquette and stuff that amounted to sensitivity training in this book. I bought the PDF and did a custom print-on-demand version (as seen in the thumbnail of this video), that did not include the 35 pages of fluff at the beginning, the 15 full page artpieces, or the etiquette training at the end. It ended up being a much slimmer and more manageable physical book.

@@DaveThaumavore I feel this, because you can't be expected to know everything about a game, especially a long and dense one like VtM. But your "superfan" friends screwed you on this one. Literally every comment you haven't liked is someone who knows the lore.
And it's because you made mistakes that's covered in the first ten minutes of any of the video games.
This is a historied 90s RPG. The "lore" is the whole point. If Vampire was like Shadowrun and had bad mechanics people would still play it, just in a different system. That's how much the metaplot means to people.
One addendum, this isn't a lore wars thing. White Wolf fans hate White Wolf products the most, but everyone knows the lore is vague in some areas, this is on purpose. No one argues about the uncertain spaces (the nature of the antediluvians, what really happened at the conclave of Prague, is Saulot in Tremere's mindfuzz, etc). You on the other hand made mistakes on solid canon (you got stuff wrong that's explained on the back of some of the books), so you got the tally whacker. Hope you've done better for your other videos.

The six childer then sired their own progeny and Caine after a time left the second city. The 3rd generation killed their sire. Then Caine returned and Cursed the third generation. @@meno2294 Hunger is the exact thing that is so many ways better in V5 :D. I really think V5 and V20 are for different kind of players, but I personally will never go back to v20 after they released all the clans in v5. In v20 it felt like you play DnD, but it happened to drink blood from time to time. All new blood mechanics are so much better now and the game feels so much opened for interpretation from GM and players that feels really open RP, and not that much dice driven.
I am just still not sure where I stand on the disciplines, I am totally ok with some of the changes there in V5, but I am not sure for others, it is easier to make the vampire you want with the less limitations of the new system, but I feel like some clans lost part of their soul.

@@meno2294 so you know absolutely nothing about v5 I can see.
      1. There is nothing "political correct" in v5, they just explained it it better after the critisism.
      2. All necromants are Hecata, but actually all old sects are still present and it is more interesting because everyone in Hecata pretend to be one big family, meanwhile trying to kill everyone else.
      3. I have no idea what you mean about the hunger dices, the party I am story telling for learned this for like 3 minutes... and part of them are role playing for first time, wherever you are trying to go with "ah so hard, I need book all the time" just sounds silly.
      4. If you are really into sabbat, there is unoficial book that gives some light how to do so, there is official sabbat book that 95% already covers it.
      5. Nosferatu are anything but pretty, lol.
      6. Sabbat btw were kind of a problem in most editions, this clan was changed in every edition because it was not working properly in RP, with their attitude for me it was kind of logical to push them aside and go wtih the factions that work well.
      7. Vampire was always about both political and personal horror, in v5, they just added more systems to make it work, and removed the things that were against it.

@@meno2294 crap again. As I said in first chapter of the hecata book, they start with that they continue to hunt out each other, killing, some eating, others drink necromants from different sects. They are "one family" now, but share no love to each other. Their role play now is super fun because if you choose story of that family it is all about lies and conspiracy between the vampires.
I am not sure what is political correct, except they clearly said they don't want nazis to play the game... Duuuh(from the original logicaly) because how you lose humanity is very open ended. As far as they left humanity to personal convictions and chronical tenets, if the story teller don't specify this specifically, vampires can even mass murder without any punishment. V5 players even complained about it (something that sounded stupid as far as the story teller can easily add morals for them if that is their intention, for example in the campaign I am leading, they are allowed to kill freely if it is not their touchstone or against their personal convictions.
At the moment you write how you cant make religious game, there are 3 v5 books specicifaly about creating your own sects and their enemies.

Secondly, no, they are not friends, they all face the same outside enemy of the second inquisition, but they just can't stop doing the old ways.
There are pre-made sects, antagonist, backgrounds and so on, expanding to giving more freedom of the story teller is not a bad thing in my book.
As I said, there are chronicle tenets that are kind of the story teller rules, you decide what they are allowed to do without loosing humanity, another way to give more freedom and as I said, that is not a bad thing. Having conversation with the people on the table is common sense, if you don't do it, you are most likely really bad story teller. Even aside from personal borders, story teller should listen to players what they expect, otherwise at least part of the group will end up disappointed. And, yes, even in horror it is good to know if part of the group is not comfortable with something, because you don't want half of your group to leave mid story and let you hanging and trying to fix it.

And... you F'ed. Your character is F'ed. Inevitable you'll make a mistake and stuff will happen. Nobody said it was a fair world.
"oooh I can play vampire." Yes you can, now first point of the night, you got sometime. Anyone of you hungry and in need to feed? Suddenly it isn't that romantic anymore.
Also the fact that creating a character means making a story around said character and using that to fill in the sheet means your character is already breathing, has history, has flaws, strengths and desires. DnD? Character is done in 10 minutes, Vampire? Even if you are relative quick...40 minutes. Because STORY matters...

I will say V5 is not a bad system, I will say that I wouldn't mind a revisit but... the fact they over simplified and also over streamlined certain things as far as disciplines, and also some of the lore kinda turned me off a little aka making Necromancy and Obtinebration into basically one discipline called Oblivion and just completely cutting out everything about the Tremere's Thaumaturgy but just keeping the generic Blood Sorcery, in earlier versions you could legit be a pyromancer, and also removing a lot of the different bloodlines and how they handled the Sabbat; not to mention me and also my players did have a bit of hard time chewing on and processing some of the rules and mechanics. The things I sorta agree with as far as the lore didn't mind the creation of the Hecata, it was basically the same clan with a few having some minor variations which I do think they could've touched on in more detail with Cults of The Blood Gods, also the heavy love that was given to Thin-Bloods and Caitiff was great, I really do enjoy Thin-Blood Alchemy, the way they simplified dice rolls with the custom dice; I get people like the classical d10 system... It just helps not have to omit so many things to memory. All in all V5 isn't a horrible system, some of things are probably nit-picky but I really do think they could've handled the lore better.

I think you mixed up Anarchs and Sabbat, the Anarchs uphold the Masquerade but don't like the Camarilla's rules, while the Sabbat openly violate the Masquerade and try to rule over mortals.

Reducing the target number to 6 for a success while maintaining the difficulty as "number of successes required" makes these vampires more competent than those from Vampire: The Requiem (where the target number was 8, which was the standard for new World of Darkness).
Alas, as you mentioned, while it wants to stress the players to put the narrative first and even goes out to say "there are no rules," it clearly contradicts itself with the many rules, as you've stated. This franchise would be better served with "Powered by the Apocalypse" game mechanics as opposed to the more traditional Storyteller game mechanics.
Last but not least, I'm not a fan of the specialty dice. They're basically more limited versions of d10s for the number-averse.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Most of the Anarchs respect and uphold the Masquerade and some of the other Traditions. This is crucial fact about WoD lore. Sabbat wants to rule openly through tyranny.

    You know what?
The behind-the-scenes shenanigans with White Wolf/World of Darkness illustrates how capitalism ruins things. I fully expect some pro-cap people to exclaim otherwise, but Old and New WoD were both pretty cool. I favored New since it was less up it's own butt with "lore" in a meta setting (giving me more implicit freedom to run whatever sort of story stuff I want without players assuming all the meta plot stuff is law). But now we have a split between the two, with "New" becoming Chronicles (Oh, good, another CoD) with some cumbersome changes mixed into with some genuinely good changes so that ultimately I just want to keep my "First Edition" books to be able to run a smoother version of the game (conditions just... they're too cumbersome, and the XP changes just make XP tracking have more steps for no good reason). Meanwhile "Old" has been split up further into some rereleases and a V20 variant and a 5th edition, needlessly making an already complex book situation messier (which ones do you buy? A new person may be completely confused). And to be fair, it's kind of the same problem with CoD, as the 2nd edition is only about 80% compatible, so if you've been hunting down a copy of the Changeling book or Promethean, you might wind up with a not-quite compatible with core 1E "New" WoD book.
I really like the game, at least the one I have nearly all the books for... and I like introducing people to it who only know D&D or Pathfinder as I think it really opens up their perspective of what roleplaying games can be. But I hate trying to explain to them what books are or are not compatible should they decide they want to buy some.
Which is probably why I've branched out to various other systems, from Fate to Dungeon World to Monster of the Week to Blades in the Dark and even Call of Cthulhu (which is crazy that I was ignorant about as a game for so long). But I still have a hankering to run a "New" World of Darkness game, as it is a unique game. Also, Mage or Changeling are the best lines, Vampire doesn't even come close.

2:40 God did not curse Cain(e)'s grandchildren, nor were these 'children' in the conventional sense. God cursed Caine, then Caine As the First Vampire sired(made into Vampires) 3 Childer- who then had between them 13 Childer, or the 3rd Generation. This 3rd Generation then rose up and Diablerised Caine's Childer. Caine then cursed the 13, who went on to found the Clans.

I agree, but at least it's an easy fix. I just made a Nosferatu-specific flaw called "Horrifying" and wrote that it makes you look like a classic Nosferatu and that it doubled the difficulties of all Social skill checks made against mortals (with the obvious exception being Intimidation which has it's difficulty halved instead). Boom, done

I run Requiem 2E. The only thing I took from VtM5 was the use of hunger dice. It fits surprisingly well. I use blood red transparent dice for hunger and opaque white d10s for the rest of the pool. I also use black dice to represent equipment, and then if they come up 1 or 10 I ask the player to narrate how their equipment got fucked up or saved their ass. Works for us.
