    SYNDROME (ARDS)
    • Classic definition (American-European Consensus
    Conference’s definition 1994)

    - Ratio of PaO2/FiO2 less than 200
    - Acute bilateral pulmonary infiltrates
    - PCWP normal to low
    • Measured by pulmonary artery catheter or no
    clinical evidence of left-heart failure
    Berlin Definition of ARDS 2012
    • The Berlin Definition of ARDS requires that all of the
    following criteria be present to diagnose ARDS:
    - Symptoms must have begun within 1 week of a
    known clinical insult
    - Bilateral opacities consistent with pulmonary
    edema must be present on CXR or CT
    - Respiratory failure must not be explained by cardiac
    failure or fluid overload
    • The severity of the hypoxemia defines the severity
    of the ARDS
