    Just to add a different perspective about the 2-player game... My buddy and I play per the recommendation in the rulebook for playing a 2-player game, which is to use the standard Trilogy scenario (i.e., the 4-player rules). I.e., each player handles both decks for their side. Works very nicely.

    Great review! Definitely best at 4, but I’ve enjoyed a simple solo variant from bgg and looking forward to the official solo/co-op.

      The official one works nicely, an easy flow chart of AI behaviour.

    I agree - this is a great game. I do think it still works very well double handed with two players though. It also manages to capture some of the feel of its bigger cousin with that balance between focusing on paths and battlegrounds.

      There are also some other scenario options on BGG.

    I really like the limitations of the card usage but I do think in a 2vs2 game the decks as a whole are too limited in scope. Everyone has a clear goal on whether to go for the path or the battlefields with very few deviations and this doesn't change with multiple plays.

    I agree. Awesome scene!
    Thanks for sharing. Going to think about getting this game based on your review.

    Wow! 9/10 is certainly high praise coming from you Luke. I’ll definitely take a closer look at it. Thanks man!

    Hi Luke! Any plans to do a beyond the base game video for the expansion? And whether you prefer this or LotR LCG for solo play?

      There are plans yes, just haven't got round to trying it yet!

    What about the recommended fellowship of the ring two player short game variant that’s at the end of the rulebook? Apparently a good way to teach and it tells you what cards to include for the mode

      Rather play the full game and there's always a Dized tutorial out there if you can stomach the app for learning if the rulebook doesn't suffice

    Stellar game at 4 players but man it sucks that the 2p variants seem like afterthoughts. Especially disappointing because I was hoping for a quicker alternative to the big brother. Instead it really is poor and pales in comparison to the 4 player experience

      Coop and solo player expansion is releasing this year. Will be interesting to see how that will turn out.

      Have you tried playing the full trilogy 2 handed?

    • @elqord.1118
      @elqord.1118 Před rokem +1

      @@gearlocplayed all variants. One requires you to play with two hands (a nightmare) and the other asks you to smash the two decks together to create a huge one which really screws up the tempo of the game and makes it impossible to strategize within your deck. It changes it for the worse significantly. So all around a fail at 2p.

    • @gearloc
      @gearloc Před rokem +4

      I find 2 handing to be a fun way to play! Lots to keep track of, but ultimately you’re usually only playing 3-4 cards a round with each hand, barring some long combo turns!

    I really like quartermaster general but have never seen any of the Lord of the ring movies. Would I still appreciate this game? Or would I suffer from not knowing the lore?

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  Před rokem +2

      I don't think you lose a ton from not knowing the lore, but not being into LOTR at all, you might not get as much out of this.

      @simong4252 Před rokem +1

      I played for the first time and it was a blast (4player) but so much of that came from theme... Seeing someone playing Gimli on the Moria Path and then dropping the Balrog on it was a huge game moment
      However
      If you havent read any of the books or seen the films you won't get any of this out of it and it will turn into a fairly abstract and dry mechanical "match the symbols, count the pips" game
