Dr. Slump was made before Dragon Ball, and it had already ended by the time the latter started. In fact, this is the series that made Toriyama famous in Japan before Dragon Ball made him famous everywhere else. Funny enough, back when the Dr. Slump characters first appeared in the Dragon Ball manga, they tried to bait the readers into thinking they were getting a revival of their own series before Goku and Blue showed up out of nowhere.
9:21 Yeah…your instincts were right, in original Japanese dub, Blue isn’t recognizing him as his younger brother, he describes the kid as “just my type” and asks the kid to have dinner with him. Thankfully the kid, blissfully unaware, declines saying, “he doesn’t need repayment, he’s just doing a good deed.” Japan sometimes, dude…
Also, the timing here is crazy, because TFS just put out their commentary for World’s Strongest, and in that commentary they make a joke about Kochin working with Blue and saying, “STAY AWAY FROM MY KIDS!!!”
Yep i was just about to comment this! It kinda continues the gag from a few episodes prior when he says Bulma is not his type.
Worth mentioning that this wasn’t written by Toriyama, it’s a filler episode.
@@mathewcooper8505It's definitely a mix. The actual episode is in the manga, but the anime inflated it and made Blue's character worse.
And this is the only time you care that the English dub changed something. Americans...
General Blue is the sussiest character in Dragon Ball. That interaction between him and the boy is different in the original dub.

General Blue is the 6th strongest fighter on the planet with power level of 108 ( Roshi is 180 ). Blue is parody of the Nazl " Blond Hair / Blue Eyes Aryan Super Soldier " from 1930's. Even his uniform is based on the real life pre-WW2 uniforms worn by Nazi members in the 1920's and 30's. Toriyama is a huge WW2 buff and many dragon ball villains are parodies of WW2 figures, like Oolong is Mao Zedong ( CCCP ), Commander Red is Joseph Stalin ( USSR ) and Emperor Pilaf is a parody of Emperor Pui ( Manchukuo, a Japanese puppet state in ww2).

I actually thought Dr. Slump ended before Dragon Ball started but, looking it up, there was actually almost a year of overlap (Edit: That was actually the collected edition. They actually did not overlap). Dr. Slump made Toriyama rich and famous; Dragon Ball made him world-renowned.

She definitely is. Vegeta was actually AFRAID to fight her. Well, maybe not afraid, but he didn't want to fight any "gag-manga" characters after that.
The Looney Toons vibe is very accurate to describe the Arale strength and the vibe of the show. Also, Dr. Slump's wife was his crush on the TV show, but I never saw him getting her love, it was really nice to see them married.
Akira Toriyama was in his early twenties when he made Dr. Slump and Dr. Slump made a lot of money, and his editor wanted him to make a martial arts manga, so he made Dragon Ball after that.

Arale Norimaki is one of the most powerful characters in Dragon Ball as she is an artificial lifeform and a GAG/parody character. She can fold and manipulate the panels of the very Manga that she is in. Like she is literally able to fold people into paper airplanes. However a Destroyer, the Angels and of course Zeno can all erase her from existence. But she can beat pretty much everyone else in Dragon Ball though.
Also yeah Suppaman (English Dub, Sourman) is Dragon Ball/Dr. Slump's version of Superman. His name is Kenta Kuraaku and he is a report. He is also a parody character.
Though I would love to see her meet Beerus, and him to be very concerned...
@@Sephiroth144Arale and Beerus did meet in Super. Goku was the one who said that none of Arale's tricks would work on Beerus and that Beerus would destroy her.

Yeah Dr Slump had run its full course by the time of Dragon Ball. At this point in the DB manga, Dr Slump was actually a much longer series. I don't think Dragon Ball passed it until either the Saiyan or Frieza arc

In the manga, obacha is a teenager same age as the two siblings, so he would be an adult at this point, also because senbei never got married in the manga before it ended, so being married with a kid adds time to it. Obacaha is just a very small adult with a sliver of a mustache, but yeah, still creepy given that it's blue
Arale and Toriyama's other creations really make you wonder what brought him to creating the massive Shonen that DBZ became.
I believe Launch is from this penguin village no one ever says that but it makes it makes cents compared her to the characters of villagers. There are at least nine people including arale and the 2 turbos that are stronger then Goku who's he has to get stronger than before even going into one of his weakest points in his journey at the beginning of dragon Ball z .

you know, when you think about it, this makes Aralie canon to the dragon ball world so everytime Toriyama blew up the earth in dragon ball Z and beyond Aralie was blown up too

Also, I read several Dr slump volumes and the kid is actually an adult by this time, since he was in high-school in the manga and senbei wasn't married with kids back then, so he's at least 18 and working, thus the meeting reference. You can also see a sliver of a mustache on him. He's just a dwarf for size

"Wait, so this village is part of the Dragon Ball universe?!" Eh...it's kind of a gray area. There's like nothing that implies it should be or that it is other than the very minor crossover stuff that happens, but for the sake of moving the plot of the crossover along they acknowledge things happening in the saga this is taking place in.
As for Dr. Slump, it's the manga that Toriyama created before Dragon Ball and is the first super popular series he created (though he did make various little one-off stories and stuff in Shonen Jump aside from Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball during that time period (Dragon Ball itself was sort of reworked from Dragon Boy and another one-off story that were both published a year before he reworked them into Dragon Ball)).
Regarding Arale's strength, even if we ignore her feats in Super, she should be stronger than Goku at this point, yeah. One of the repeating gags in the Dr. Slump manga was that she could split planet Earth in two by punching it and that she could destroy the moon by tossing a stone at it. I think both of those things happened like four times each in the manga, though to be fair, one of those times was by Obacchan (the boy that helped Blue with his car)
and kid goku once punched someone out of manga panel by breaking the panel boundary. 🤣🤣

Dr. Slump is a joke story, so you can't really apply the standard "stronger than X". Gonna be stronger if a joke calls for it (like Vegeta getting owned in Super).

I know people debate on whether the English dub was good or not, but in the case of General Blue it really was an improvement.
Nah. I think him being a degenerate ped0file nazi made the point harder that Blue was a bonafied villain with no redeeming qualities. Up until Goku's opponents either end being his friends or bumbling fools with joke endings to the encounters. Blue was a legit threat for the most part and not a person that can be redeemed into being a friend. He was the first true villain of the entire series.
