If we annex Russia, I suggest we make it a yearly tradition to stand at the border and wave leeks around and sing Loituma.

As someone who has nothing to do with either country, I support the Netherlands annexing Russia.
It's not an annexation. It's a voluntary referendum. Our army couldn't annex someone's backyard if they tried (exaggerated but basically we have a really small army).

As a Russian from Saint Petersburg I am definitely down for this. After all, Dutch people helped us build our river channels so that we won't be flooded every summer. Today I saw an article (video van NOS Story’s op insta for Dutch people reading this) about how many poor Russians are arrested for saying things like “we don’t want war” or “we don’t agree” or “we don’t want to fight” (last one mostly related to Putins last ridiculous action: the mobilization of 300 000 that need to fight (compulsory). If they refuse to fight they get arrested. It’s absolutely terrible what’s happening in Russia, as well as in Ukraine. There was a school shooting as well in Russia (RTL Nieuws) I think today (at least I saw it today). At least 13 deaths, also kids included… Hope everyone is informed for now, as I know a lot of things are censored at least in Russia. As a Russian who lives in France, I support that fully. My relatives and friends in Russia could finally live in the European Union and not have to get a visa to see me. Sadly, the fact that they live 9,437 kilometres away will not disappear, but you know, after traversing The Netherlands, they'll only need to traverse Beligum to get to France, so I think 1 country between us is still better than 4. Being honest, I learn and already learnt enough about the country to call it my Vaderland also because its mentality is just what I thought on life myself, and was sincerely suprised to learn is a thing somewhere out there :')

The Netherlands did have good ties with Russia back in the day, it's even the reason for the current Russian flag. The Russians asked us to help them build a navy and actually adopted their own version of our tricolour flag for their navy and it actually stuck and became a national symbol as well.
And the Peace Palace in The Hague. The last Czar choose The Hague as the seat for the great peace conferences as The Netherlands were neutral and enjoyed warm relations with Russia at the time.
Funny that the current czar is expected to the Hague for a lesser warm welcome

I am missing Willem Barentz .... this Russian/Dutch explorer trying to connect Europe and East Asia... ending in Nova Zembla making friends with Russian bears.
Because in Dutch, the combination -ml- is not common. There's 'omleiding' (detour) and a few others. But to Dutch ears zemlya cannot be analysed into 'zem' and 'lya', because they don't mean anything in Dutch. In "omleiding" and similar words, 'om' is a preposition, that gives details about the second part of the word. Therefore zemlya was heard as zembla, while novaya became nova, which was familiar from Latin.

Good that they have corrected the Russian flag in this clip. In the first version which was broadcast and is also still on youtube, they had swapped the red and blue colors so flag was shown as white, blue, red.
One of the stories for origin of Russian flag is that Russian Tzar Peter took the Dutch flag (when he was in Holland at that time) and cut the red stripe and placed it under the blue stripe.
Interesting, according to the french red is for the people, white for the king and blue for the nobility. Perfectly just that red is below then, first Putin, then his cronies, f*ck the people

I am Romanian, I would vote for independence. My country suffered more damage from EU and SUA that it ever suffered under communism. That's the opinion of almost 100% of the people who experienced communism. Truly, it is not funny! Humor doesn't save anything, it helps swimming through deep s it for a while, before sinking! That's all. :-)

People always believe that living was better in the past and tend to forget the troubles of those days. It’s just old people’s sentiments, not rational thinking.
@@lennardv5 Choosing between two evils is the story of my nation. UK left EU from a leading position, but when you are a slave for the great powers, the story changes. And trust me, you know how to make the difference between two evils. EU is more destructive for my country than the communism was (there was a pole who showed that about 99% of the people who experienced communism thought (about half/half) that either now it is the same like in communism and nothing changed or that is worse, 1% didn't vote.
My thinking is a very rational thinking based on certitudes, experience and knowledge. I am not one of the emo or soya generations. Sentiments, especially childish tantrums are specific to these days. We didn't have those in my days. And don't think I am 70 :-) I am 45+. The point for you and others is that NOW, comparing the EU and the communism I experienced, it is no difference (in some regards is worse, in some regards due to technologies is better); only people got far more idiotic (scientific studies were made and that is their conclusion), unrooted, raised by pets rather than parents, educated by the state, and they believe lousy ideologies with religiosity. Also the mass formation was put in place with super high precision. Instincts and intelligence dropped dramatically everywhere in the Western societies.

I have always loved the Netherlands, because of the fietspad. I'm not Russian, but if it were possible, I would definitely vote to become Dutch and to speak fluent Dutch, too! Arjen van Lubach has made his point. I think everyone ... or at least every European would like to live in an organized country like NL .... except the Belgians and the Germans, of course.
If you want organized, then Germany is the place to be.
Germans often visit the Netherlands if they want a familiar environment but an exciting and un-organised holiday.
@@Widdekuu91what? The Netherlands is MUCH better organised than Germany. Every square centimeter here is carefully designed and if you look at dutch streets and infrastructure they always look so perfect it’s almost scary. Germany is more rough and less modern and definitely not as well organised
