You painted an owl with gold, so you ARE an artist ❤ Thank you for making this video. It answered my question of real gold paint 🎨

    I love this channel.
It is easy to make your own shell gold. It is tedious, but easy. It is a bit pricey, but easy. There are several CZcams videos that show how to do it. You will make significantly more than the the amount in that tiny pan. Artists, give it a go!

I had wanted to make some for this, but I just ran out of time. I will be making a how to make shell gold video this year.

You should consider making a video on the basics of sculpting for repairs. Maybe using the milliput

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder  Před 6 měsíci +1

Milliput is great to sculpt with unfortunately you can't use it if you need to use bole. So it only works on things like the weathervane where I use paint instead of bole.
But thank you for the suggestion, I'm trying to come up with video ideas for filming in the new year.

You are amazing artist. It takes me days of coming up with a plan and obsessing and fiddling with the outcome. You just seem to pull the beauty out of thin art and show us the results. True joy Ruth. Thank you for the gifts you gave us this season ❤

I use the shell gold on my miniatures. It’s lovely to use; you can achieve very fine lines.
    I love your owl.

I've tried this store bought shell gold for some icon painting a while ago and I wasn't able to burnish it to get a proper shine out of it and was very disappointed because it's expensive stuff. I think the problem is that they just don't have the resources to make it properly like the old masters made it and achieve a similar product. It has to be done by hand and is an intensive process which takes time, patience and a bit of elbow grease. So I looked around the internet and there is one video on youtube of a russian lady in israel who went to an russian icon painting school giving a tutorial on how to make real shell gold from gold leafs and gomme arabique. I tried this method and after my first attempt I was amazed what I ended up with. It's like painting with gold leafs. It's very much worth a look if you're fascinated by gold techniques in medieval and renaissance art and want to achieve similar results. It takes about 12 sheets of gold so it's also about half the cost of the store bought one.

Thanks again Ruth. There is a very interesting video from the Bethlehem Icon Academy of one of the Russian students making shell gold, well worth a watch -- the glimmer of the gold at the end of the process is magnificent. The host of the video explains that he did it because so much of the shell gold available on the market is of poor quality, and he was thrilled when one of his students could demonstrate the process...

Oh my... I’m embarrassed to call myself an artist. Didn’t even know there was such a thing.
Gold paint just doesn’t cut it in some of my work.
    Ruth, you’re amazing. Thank you.
And your little owl is very cute 🦉

Wow!! Thank you, I didn’t even know that existed. I’ve been looking for something like that for years and could only find gold enamel that looks like crap (rubbish I think you’d say). Now I know what’s available

No gesso, sealant, bole or size needed and can be burnished!?!
I wonder what it will look like over transparent wc colors….

May I ask how fine the pigment is... I have been asked if possible to airbrush it in their art work through stencils or "Frisk" film... I figure using a cheaper Paasche Mdl H (Similar to a single action "Binks Wren"). I am an (Very) old fine artist and teacher and used to do work for Paasche Airbrush Co back in the 60's and 70's...a mdl H was introduced in the 1920's. I have used it for sign work blending wet on wet "one shot" lettering enamel and also to spray water based sizing so as to not leave brush marks on sculpture projects. I could use the right size fluid nozzle if I knew how fine the pigment... thinner than say titanium white? (which is quite large? Thanks...

This paint is like a water colour block. But you add water as you use it, almost brushstrokes at a time . If you made some up, I think the gold would keep sinking to the bottom. As it's real gold. You can see the particles of gold, but I have no idea how thin/thick it would be. Sorry can't help on this one.

Thanks Ruth, you can always "Back pressure" the tip blowing air into the spray jar and keep the pigment suspended between spraying...I'll give it a try. I've often mix "Shimmer powders" for set designers, mixing eye make up shimmers with candy apple paints which worked quite well...thanks for taking the time to respond..@@RuthTappinGilder

A question, what did they use on manuscripts ? A version of this ? Did they burnish it also ? xo

Shell gold has been used for hundreds of years. It's just gold ground up in gum arabic, to make a paint.
