Wasn't the whole point of the ten-year deal that over time his pay be a progressively smaller and smaller percent of the salary cap? According to Forbes, he's making $20 million per year off the field with endorsements from State Farm, Proctor & Gamble, Oakley, Adidas, BioSteele, Bose, DiecTV, Essential Water, Whoop and Electronic Arts. He is part of an ownership group that's opening 30something Whataburger restaurants in the KC region. He owns part of the other 3 pro sports teams in Kansas City. Hell, he just bought a professional pickle ball team. He could make the league minimum and still have Scrooge McDuck levels of money.
The media doesn't seem to understand that contracts exist so stuff like this doesn't have to happen. If you had to make a new contract every time someone else got a new deal, there would be no point in contracts.

I'm a Chiefs fan, so I've seen decades of dysfunction. Selfishness everywhere. Blaming everywhere. Egos everywhere. LOSING everywhere. It's weird in modern sports, but this is what all parties understanding the goal and the league rules and what it takes to win consistently looks like. When the rules change, they'll all change strategy to win within the new parameters.
It's not a secret formula, it's just other teams and other quarterbacks aren't ready to go that route yet. Mahomes is one of many former "highest paid QB's" already anyway.

This is how the Spurs essentially built a 20 year dynasty. A smart franchise with a true superstar who has enough character and clear goals who's OK with taking less money so the front office can build around him and make smart moves to make sure they have a chance every year to compete. That's what Duncan did.
And that's why Kobe essentially fell out of contention to get ring #6, because he signed a massive deal and the Lakers couldn't afford to go after major talent. And that's why the Spurs were ALWAYS a contender from 1998 - 2016.
This is why Tim Duncan is easily one of the greatest NBA of all time.

I just love that stance from Mahomes. Feels like he hasn't forgotten how almost surreal the money they get paid out is and hearing him say that the team comes first (although I know that's not too hard to say when you're Mahomes and know with your value you're gonna get paid accordingly sooner or later), that is just awesome to hear! As someone who currently lives in Baltimore and is unhappy about the amount Lamar Jackson was paid for his underperformance I'm considering becoming primarily a Chiefs fan.

He is not the 7th or 9th highest "paid" QB. He's the 7th or 9th in salary FROM HIS TEAM. He's the highest "paid" QB playing b/c of his endorsements. More winning gets him lots more endorsements and that is many times more important over his lifetime than making a few million more from his team.

If he’s already the 7th highest paid, expected to be 9th highest by next season…for how much he signs the next deal doesn’t affect other QB salaries very much.
