I have 3 herniated discs in my lower back. Been overweight and crappy strength for years. Started overall strength training 7 months ago, deadlifting 3 months ago. I’m addicted to deadlifting and just hit 2 plates today. Going from chronic pain and tiptoeing to lifting heavy shit off the ground is empowering. Oh, and back pain is like nonexistent now.
damn, that is powerful! keep going!
Inspiring !
Had lower back pain…started deadlifting AND learned to hip hinge when bending and like magic my back paid is not only gone but the sheer power my legs can drive is obscene. No way you can convince me it isn’t the best exercise on the planet
Had the same but with Romanian deadlifts. Low back and hip pain are almost non existent.
I struggle with lower back pain and started deadlifting with the barbell as of this year, and I think the back pain is worse as a result. I love deadlifting though, and started around 200 pounds and quickly shot up to 280, my goal is 300 and I think I can do that soon if not already. 300 is my max weight before I need more equipment so I'm in no hurry. I must be doing something wrong though. I walk all day as a letter carrier, so I don't know if that is related to back pain and I've always had a little lower back pain. Wish the deadlift helped me! But maybe I'm doing it wrong.
@@curtissiebold4460lower back? Try stretching the hell out of your glutes…sounds strange but tight glutes will pull on the lower back and it’s painful! Combine a really good twice per day glute stretch and deadlifting to strengthen erectors! Barring that you may wanna see chiro or a spine/back doc.
@@curtissiebold4460also the hip hinge was crucial to fixing my back…I no longer ever bend at the back…I push my butt out like instagram model and body will naturally follow suit. Feels bit weird at first but after awhile it becomes second nature. Good luck dude lemme know if any of this helps. Back pain really sucks
@@mrdvcapj so I guess I'm just mostly confused about the hip hinge part and that's probably where I might be doing something wrong. I mean I feel like I'm doing everything right. I tried to remember all the cues and stuff I hear about from CZcams videos, especially the advice from mindpump. But maybe I still forget some stuff. I'll have to record myself and take a look at the footage after. I've never had anybody who knows what they are doing watch me and this is mostly a journey on my own and figuring it out for myself. At some point a personal trainer would probably be very valuable for me at least for a little while to make sure I'm doing everything right.
But anyway I just started doing barbell exercises fairly recently especially the squat and deadlift pretty much only starting since the beginning of year. There's something about it that just makes me feel really good. Especially for instance if I do it at night time which is when I mostly do my workouts, the next day I feel really amazing and feel like I have more energy and I definitely attribute that to doing these heavier compound movements like the deadlift or squat. Even when I'm doing it, like the deadlift at 250+ pounds, which I know is probably just warm up weight for a lot of people lol (hey I'll get there!) But as heavy as it is to get off the floor, on the way up I'm verbally like oh yeah that feels good!
So I hope I don't ruin it and injure myself too much with my lower back!
45 mins dedicated to deadlift? Yes please!
I can't believe I just stumbled into this channel, it's awesome
Welcome aboard!
Very awesome channel
They are the best 👍
Same here. And now I'm bingeing the content. Can't believe I haven't found this knowledge pool before
Same here!! Where have you guys been all my life lol.
Deadlifts are the best medicine for a bad back.
I used to have a bad back and stupidly painful spasms pretty regularly that would make it impossible to sit down or stand up straight for at least a week. 3 months of deadlifts cured that.
I love that sore feeling in my lats and lower back the day after some good deadlifts/Romanian deadlifts. My absolute favorite part tho is when my forearms get all weak and pumped, and I can feel every muscle in them like little strings 😂
Everything the guys here are saying is TRUE! I am a woman of 51 and often see other (younger) people skipping all together deadlift & squat. Such a shame. It's the quickest way to get lean especially in your midsection without doing crazy ab-exercises. Love the podcast! Greetings from The Netherlands!
I could listen to you guys for hours. I've recently switched to full body workouts, once or twice per week, while focusing on deadlifts and squats in the gym. I cycle on a road bike as well, and do a little bit of pushups and pull-ups everyday at my house. Keep up the great work guys!
Always think it’s so funny when Justin interjects his reiterations so passionately. All 3 of these dudes are so smart and insightful.
im a bench presser.I rarely deadlift. After watching this I start the deadlift tomorow
How is it going?
@@yayowickd3826 very very good.I mastered the technique
@@antoinelessard579 awesome!
As a woman in agriculture, lifting "odd" things off the ground and heavy objects over head is very common and there are natural techniques your body will learn to aid you in the movement. Although, through weight training and definitely deadlifts (WHICH I LOVE!!) make all the every day "odd" lifts more natural and much easier to accomplish. Applying proper training techniques in daily life is a total game changer. Lifting sacks of feed? No problem. Tossing 60-80# hay bales up on a stack? Done with ease and grace. Weights are applicable in any and all aspects of life. Very, very profitable when done correctly. Do not underestimate the intimidating lifts done right.
I had back pain for years and was nervous about the deadlift. I learned to do it correctly and incorporated it into my routine via MAPS programming. My back feels better than ever now and I've got no more pain.
Performed my first deadlift ever at the age of 46. It's still good a 'few' years later.
I started Stronglifts 5x5 3 weeks ago; I'd run it 2 other times in the past few years and decided it was time to run it again. The synergistic effects of the squat and deadlift are amazing and translate directly to an increase in weight for the bench, OHP and Row.
I remember when i started weightlifting and i never did deadlift because it was hard and plus i didn't know the benefits of deadlift. I did lat pulldown and some row but mainly pulldowns and then my back started hurting me while i was sleep, i would wake up in the middle of the night with this weird pain, i felt like some vacuum keeps sucking my middle back muscles i can't explain it any other way so i will stretch for 10 15 min during the night so the pain will go away but since i started deadlifting that pain never occurred again. Deadlift is a must and the best single exercise
Hey,, lots of people lift in their jobs. I’m a baggage handler and tracked the amount of bags and freight I lifted, pushed, pulled and threw one day. On that busy day I did 13.16 tons, or 26,000+ lbs in 100* heat on a Tx tarmac. Props to the other tough, hard working, lifting baggage handlers out there.
Deadlifts for the win. Since I started deadlifting again at 48, I’ve had several friends complain I’m crushing their hand during a handshake. Better sleep, the mental charge you get, the feeling of hitting exhaustion and dropping the bar. If you want to be able to lift your grandkids and move house or whatever without a second thought, deadlift.
You guys should do a podcast on priming for the compound lifts
I’ve thrown my back out grabbing dumbbells for bicep curls. I’ve also thrown it out tying my shoes at the wrong angle. Deadlifts are now my all time favorite exercise. They feel great because I’m doing it properly.
Been binging your guys videos for hours now. Glorious content. Thanks boiz
I’ve been looking for the kind of channel that would gush for 45 minutes about the deadlift. Lo and behold.
I could listen to this on repeat. I love Deadlifts. For me they are THE best lifts for keeping you honest. Question: before cancer I had a goal of wanting to be in the 300lb deadlift club. I nearly got there but after cancer and it’s treatment I thought that goal was over. Now I’m still living with cancer but getting stronger and started lifting again in January. I’m did a strength cycle for 8 weeks and got a 253lb 1Rep max. I’m currently doing a hypertrophy programme and have dropped down to 220lb. Is there a way of getting to my 300lb goal in a hypertrophy programme or do I need to switch back to strength. What MAPS programme would help me get to my goal? I’m 60kg and 5ft 5 by the way.
That’s awesome 👏🏼 have you hit 300 yet?
@@michaelhayes8007 not yet but I recently got up to 265lbs. Getting there 👍
@@Baggins511 You still going?
Have you hit your goal yet?
Dude, keep us posted!
You guys rock. Thank you for these videos and great insight.
Great tips and encouragement on the deadlift. By far, my best and strongest lift. 💪🏿
Love this channel..amazing information.
"Nobody's hinging at the hips to pick up their Amazon package" lol that's the truth.
I’m currently doing GVT and yesterday was squats and deadlift. I felt all in my back this morning. Traps down to the ass. It’s great stuff man.
Awesome I just bought a bar and some weights for my home specifically for deadlifting and had a great deadlift workout this evening
That is awesome!
I love what you guys do. Thanks 💪
Trap bar deadlifts are a nice change of pace.
Best episode EVER
I was 16 -17 in 89 90 when Highschool football coach had the team strength train. We had progression test consisting of the big three lifts. We got T-shirts based on the combined weight. 800lb club, 1000lb club, 1200lb club etc. Each in a specific color, and we'ed all wear them on Fridays.
Great info, thanks
I love to deadlift. I will deadlift until I die.
Me too brother. Me too.
Great ep
The genie in the bottle IS the movement. The amount of weight is merely secondary...there is no space for EGO lifting in this exercise...I enjoy the initial lumbar muscles stretch and then slow deliberate movement and enjoy the shoulders back and hips forward movement. My favorite exercise. And I'm 54.
Thanks!
People do get hurt deadlifting. My brother in law is an example of an experienced lifter who herniated a disc doing it. I deadlift but I don't chase PRs / 1RM ... I try to do 8 reps each set to keep the weight in a manageable range.
Watching this before I go in for deadlifts 💪🏽
Same bro
As a beginner, my deadlift limit as of today is 74 kilos ☺️
As a trainer i gave everyone deadlift.😏 There were whispers from the other trainers in the gym "he's gonna hurt somebody." 😂😂😂 No one ever gont hurt!
Deadlifts and upright row are excellent, just keep your ego in check.I had weakness where rear delt joins back, was stopping me bench...upright row cured it in days.
Worked out to this. Didn't know this can be motivation too 😂
Edit: No other pre-workouts were used 🤘🏼
It's funny because I deadlifted regularly for like 20 years. Then six years ago I gradually pulled away from it. First I switched to DB's and eventually stopped all together. LOL
So today I deadlifted for the first time in like four years. Mainly because Sal and Adam won't shut up about it. 😁The good news was that technique wise it was like riding a bike. I've always been a natural deadlifter and it was like I never stopped.
But man...it was humbling. I did 3x5 with 315 at an RPE8. That used to be a warm up set for me back in the day. 🤣 But after four years it could've been worse. Plus I was surprised that it gassed me a bit. So I wound up unexpectedly pre fatigued for the rest of my full body lift.
ok what are your opinions on both sumo deadlift, and rackpulls?
I am a sixty four year old female; I started deadlifting a short time ago and l love it. I am lifting a very small amount. How much should I be lifting?
Do enough for 6 reps and 4 sets you’ll know how much weight that’ll be u take any supplements like creatine
I went to In-Shape for a month. 2 squat racks, one deadlift platform. Squat rack always taken by girls building their booty, dudes ego lifting and the curlers lol. Deadlift was always available though. Now I have a home gym so I don’t have to worry
I have herniated discs and somehow sumo and rack pulls help me a ton and are easier for me without losing form. Love this channel btw. My new WFH channel to listen to.
Deadlift are king 👑 in my opinion along with squats…Bench press..Deadlifts…Squats and neutral or soup 🍲 naited grip pull ups…thank me later…oh yeah overhead press 💯✅👑🫡✌🏾
Mind Pump convinced me to start deadlift few months ago!
Started slowly at 150 pounds and 7 months later, my PR is now at 330 pounds...
I find it very difficult to progress now!
Run maps anabolic. Phase 2 may help you out
Trust me The back pain gone for good
Beautiful.
so the point made early on about that higher-skill lifts becoming safe if performed properly is a big one in the fact that for a lot of athletes, the amount of time spent training those proper mechanics on that lift are better spent on their actual sport and other lifts that translate over more. it all depends
I had L4-S1 fusion surgery back on October 1st, what should I do about deadlifting without risking the fusion?
Did you ever figure this out? My mom has a fusion and it’s never gone down in pain
~ 23:00 good advice
So after training with my husband (who’s trained with certified trainers) and listening to this podcast; I’m a flight attendant and a major injury we go through is pulling our back. It’s not from our personal bags or carry on bags but because customers who overstuff their carry on bags come in and ask us to do it. I haven’t lifted a heavy bag anymore after pulling something that took me like 1 month to get over. It was 2 years ago and it was the worst pain ever! What type of movement would you recommend when it comes to lifting a little over too heavy of a bag or stretches? Thank you 🙏🏼
I’m just a random internet idiot, but it sounds like for your sort of situation i’d look into kettlebells.
Start with 8-12 kilos and work your way up, Swings to work the hip hinge, clean and overhead press to simulate the lifting overhead.
Working up to pressing a 16 kilo bell is a good standard for a female, and it’s entirely possible to move to a 20-24 kilo with dedication.
With a higher kilo bell you can do deadlifts and squats as well.
What do you think about Kneesovertoesguy Doing curved back deadlifts past toes
Sumo or conventional for back muscularity?
Always while moving you should yell “PIVOT! PIVOT!!”
I don't blame people for being cautious
I really wanted to do it but i felt a serious pull that turned out to be nothing but that's not typical for me w any other exercise
I made several attempts over months before they became a regular thing
Imo it's the easiest one to hurt yourself with
I like the trap bar so I can mix up my squat/deadlift / row in the same set
The trap bar isn't going to hit your posterior chain anything like the deadloft will.
How often should 1 deadlift per week?
45 minutes on why everyone one should dead lift!? Okay let check this out
why does everyone mention risk reward ration with dead lifts then?? I want to start but im afraid cause My lower back was getting sore after deadlifting
Muscular oreness is normal, deadlifts when done properly are one of the most beneficial exercises you can perform!
@@MindPumpShow you guys have me convinced. started today, max DL 330 lol
My job requires me to walk and lift packages for 8-10 hours straight for 5 days a week… how can I still build muscle ?
QUAH Question - How do you increase muscle/tendon elasticity? Over the years I've lost explosion that I once had playing sports at a younger age. Is it lost due to injury? Age? Neglect in training?
Look into Plyometric exercises. You also do need a base line strength for plyos to be more effective, so if you feel you don't have basic strength in the main compounds (in squat, deadlift, bench press), build those up to a decent level aswell.
Never stop doing explosive body weight work. When you get to a point where you’re comfortable, start moving fast with weights
Elasticity and force production/explosiveness peak out in the 20’s. The drop becomes worse in the late 30’s.
It’s due to fast twitch muscle fibers deteriorating at an earlier age than slow-twitch fibers.
Nothing you can do except train and try to slow down the aging process.
Guys I have had 2 hip replacements. What would be good to replace dead lifts?
Kettlebell swings work a lot of the same muscles with less risk for injury so u could look into that
Deadlifts
Tht title of fhis video is interesting.
The deadlift works the nexk sure but otherwise the rest of the deadlift is mainly w mid range partial all spread out so no other one muscle group works well.
That whole thing "picking up things from the ground is useful and functional" well whatever you believe its overloading the lower back at the starting point too.
" There is no reason to be alive if you cant do deadlifts"
was it Arnold who first said it?
@@6komodo6 was originally strong man jon pall sigmarsson but im sure arnie said something very similar
Yes. Indeed.
These are facts
How many times a week should we deadlift to gain overall muscle mass and a bigger back??
When I was a novice lifter, I deadlifted 2x per week.
But after my deadlift passed the 380 lbs, I dropped to 1x per week and I alternate with chin-ups and Olympic lifts (which are lighter than deadlifts).
Also, heavy squats have a huge overlap with deadlifts regarding muscle groups, so some lifters don’t even deadlift every week since they do heavy squats and barbell rows and weighted chin-ups which hit the same muscles as deadlifts.
Nothing better than an angry deadlift …
Or what about an RDL or SLDL?
All good and safe variations
I'm partial to dumbbell deadlifts.....it's a more deliberate minded movement.
Legs, push, pull. 3 compounds per workout. Twice a week. 5x5…all you need as a beginner.
Deadlifts rock
Are dead lifts more beneficial with hand straps or without straps??
Hi there - I, and many others, don't use hand straps bc grip strength is important to train and straps provide a handicap. Compare it to a 800hp engine with bald tires. But if you have a hand injury or other constraint, maybe you can use them to get back into not using them
Def without. It's also important to develop a solid grip strength
No straps, this will give you great grip for bench.

Trying to deadlift. I had healed my back and started Anabolic. Now, I'm obsessively trying to see what I'm doing wrong. The videos with Anabolic aren't helpful at all. So, looking for more instruction. I'll stop if I continue to be in pain. There must be some secret I never got.
Is the hex bar deadlift included in this advice?
Don't believe I have bad form but it does hurt my lower spine.
Should I wear raps or a belt when deadlifting?
Not necessary. Raps just limit your grip strength development. And while using a belt doesn't reduce core activation, it changes the fiber recruitment to a way you don't usually do in ur day to day life
@@Juamacao2503 ya I’ve actually stopped using both Bc I want to be as strong as I can in the real world not just put up big numbers in the gym
Phil Health. Kali Muscle. Rich Piana.
What about hex bar deadlift? I like it than traditional one since im new to lifting. Any thoughts anyone?
Nothing wrong with it but being new to lifting isn’t a good reason to use it
Nothing like the conventional or sumo variation. Start with RDLs if you want to learn the hip hinge movement first
Deadlift isn’t an optional workout for hypertrophy. If hypertrophy is your goal then do straight leg or Romanian deadlifts instead of traditional.
personally, it takes long to recover and the rest of my workout is worse and takes way longer, i rather chose to do rdls and bb rows
"Frequent flyer miles"🤣🤣🤣
I absolutely HATE the hexagonal plates that most gyms are using now! For the very reasons you mentioned. Stupid. Keep the weights circular dang it!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
GIANT NO FROM ME.
I used to deadlift with 50 kg literally cuz my form needed improvement and after feew weeks when i got to 70 kg with few repetitons i fucked up my back.
Ask any chiropractor and they will tell you if your posture isnt right never DL my wasnt that is why injured myself.
For farmers walk, pull ups and squats instead ofc if you have good posture and form do DL but keep it lifht

What do you think about Kettlebell Deadlift as a routine you can do 2-3 times a week because of the lower weight? Sorry for my English 😀
It definitely is a regressed exercise, perfect the kettlebell deadlift before progressing to a conventional deadlift. I get my clients to do kettle bell deadlift before deadlifting on a platform.
