What are your thoughts?
I like that he gets to be on a competitive team
The dodgers will still choke in the playoffs
playoffs every year. That's what he wants I think. A chance at a ring every year. Not to mention, endorsements, etc that will roll in for him and the Dodgers. Good choice. Better than the Blue Jays.
The Dodgers will own the NL West for a long, long, time.
I think he should’ve gone to the Royals. Along with Soto, Bellinger, and Chapman. Actually I think the Royals should get every good free agent and then some more (Royals fan btw).
Maybe Ohtani can buy the Angels from Artie Moreno 😂
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Please, God, let that happen because it would be so funny.
With the likes of LeBron, Messi, and Ronaldo reaching the end of their careers Ohtani really does have a shot to be the biggest face in sports because people who don’t even care about baseball want to watch Ohtani play because of how unique of player he is. Wish for nothing but Ohtani’s success with Dodgers cause we might never see a player like him again.
Maybe he will surpass Trout as the best
Except baseball is only a thing in U.S and Caribbean. Soccer is a world wide phenomenon. Ohtani will be a hero in Japan and America, nowhere else
Nah. Not Ohtani really does have a shot to be the biggest face in sports. Not “Ohtani really does have a shot to be the biggest face in sports.” /
@@billboggs6641bro what? Baseball isn't in just those 2 places 😂
@@perc3136he's just exaggerating the fact that baseball is not played in many countries
This might actually be good that the Angels did not resign him. They simply cannot handcuff themselves financially to have both Trout and Shohei with all that money for several years. Good for Shohei, and as for the Angels, it’s time to trade Mike Trout. It’s over.
We know ownership won’t do that though
@@nicholaskatsikas4904I feel ya as a Giants fan, our ownership won’t do shit.
Angles can't even afford him
There’s no such thing as handcuffing yourself financially in MLB. Every owner is a multi billionaire and there’s no salary cap. The Angels should be contracted from MLB or Moreno should be forced to sell the team.
Look how much money they lost with Japan leaving the angels lol
7:53 “Shohei Ohtani is the closest thing baseball has ever had to a celebrity.” Wasn’t Babe Ruth the first American celebrity?
Yes, this was very poorly worded. A lot of the big name classic players were celebrities in their own time. Heck, even Billy Sunday was a big time celebrity after his baseball career.
He probably means in the last decade or two, but still, very poorly worded
Exactly what I thought as well.
Im an angels fan it’s bittersweet that he’s leaving but I’m happy he’s getting his bag and a constant opportunity to play meaningful games in October

Went to an Angels' game this last season and it was crazy. Every jersey I saw was an Ohtani jersey and the crowd went insane every time his name was announced from start to finish. Maybe he can help the Dodgers not choke in the postseason.
They're in a weak division that's why it happens
As I just told my buddy, "Ohtani is great and all, but can he also MANAGE the team?"
Yeah but he is legitimately the greatest of all time if he keeps up his level for 5 more years and does well for 10

Good for him though.
LOLz. Billions? Yeah sure... Not. Japan makes some endorment deals, LA sells game shirts, attentance cant increase much (they already lead the majors). Thats about it. Global merch sales? Oh dear. You are either naive or dumb. But certainly uninformed. There goes your invisible "billions". Indeed invisible... straight to the dust bin. @@JohnnySnotzema
More players should do what Shohei did and announce his decision instead of having reporters doing it
No player has ever really had the authority to do it themselves. It's a nice thought though.
Definitely buying my first baseball jersey and definitely going to my first baseball game
Definitely a generational talent that Shohei Ohtani is. I've been able to personally be able to see him pitch in two games they both were amazing to watch. I totally agree with you I'm not a Angels fan but a fan of Shohei. There's definitely a lot of other people that are to, Minute Maid park was packed especially this last year when Shohei came into town.
I think later in Shohei's career he will transition into a closer. Less innings should keep is arm strong enough until retirement.
Ohtani originally planned to go to the Dodgers after high school. It seems he is finally back on the path he should be on. It is also very good timing.
I’m happy for him. Not a fan of the Dodgers, but I hope he plays great.
dodgers haters make no sense. not being of fan of them is one thing but actively hating them is moronic
I absolutely love it. Shohei deserves everything, it's gonna be awesome to see him on a contending team for the next decade
No I'm sorry. No baseball player deserves that much money. 2 Tommy John's. If I were the Dodgers and they're wasting this much money, he needs to stop pitching and focus as a fielder/DH.
@@Irishkilla79 Well it depends on the player, this one absolutely deserves it. Because he isn't just a player, his name is a global brand that will generate far more than the 700M they paid. He brings value on the field, but even more in a business sense. This was anything but wasting money.
@@Irishkilla79 People like you were disapproving him when he came over and he still proved you wrong, he'll definitely do it again. Also, they're not just paying shohei the player but shohei as a brand. You should look into the revenue he generates off the field, no other player compares. The contract will pay itself in years to come. He's being payed majorly in deferrals, it doesn't affect their ability to further better their roster at all and if the dodgers are willing to pay him, who is anyone to say that the money is a waste?
@@as-hj1et I would have insisted that he move to a 1 tool player. If he gets hurt again, waste of money.
@@Irishkilla79 why not let it play it out first? It's too early to be making these assumptions.
That's why I ❤ America. I am so happy for Shohei. He's a national hero back home in Japan 🇯🇵 Now, the pride & joy from the Land of the Rising Sun made sports history.
I’m not Japanese, I’m Chinese. But yes Asian representation is a good thing not only is he helping Japanese people. I think he’s representing well for Asian people as whole.
LA will have to wear that helmet everytime they hit a HR. Ohtani pretty much owns LA.
dodgers apparently weren't as concerned about the surgery on ohtan's elbow because the doctor who actually performed it is the official dodger's team surgeon. they apparently vetted the surgeon and his opinion whether he can come back at full strength in terms of pitching.
As if the Dodgers didn’t already have really a good fan turnout (which they do), this guy is going to put even more butts in seats. Hats off to the Dodgers, I know there are a lot of fans that don’t like them, but I have always had a ton of respect for LA. I know I’ll be getting tickets the next time the Dodgers come to MN to kick the Twins teeth in 😂
5:55 After California taxes come into effect, he'll be making about $7 per year.
Lol
And Dodgers fans will be drinking 40 dollar beers at their stadium lol.
I'm glad Ohtani is not a man who is weirdly loyal to the Angels. He doesn't miss the choice of how to live "as a player".
There were rumors about him signing with the Dodgers months ago. He likes L.A. and didnt want to move, and just switching from Orange County to LA county means he can keep the home he currently owns.
Dang the dodgers have 3 MVP'S in the top 3 hitters next years NLDS LOSS will be the worst one yet
I am a DODGER FAN (bleed blue) this is just a joke i am not hating
I feel like as long as no more scandals come up they can go far
If they lose next year in the playoffs , they should trade for Aaron Judge. Then they will have 4 mvps in the lineup
@@anthonyfam5469 or sign Soto
Pitching wins just not all the time..ask all the teams who watched the rangers win..or the braves from the 90's
Deferral could mean it extends to past his retirement as well. With inflation that means it's less NPV. But Ohtani makes more than $40 million a year in endorsements. His idea to defer the majority of his contract seems to speak to his want to be on a winning team. - WW
I hope he can stay healthy, this dude has Henry Aaron, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan potential.
You're spot on... I was making this exact argument that this is not a baseball contract but a marketing contract

Same though
Dodgers have 3 of the top 5 best hitters in baseball. Scary lineup

@@Vivek.Clips2024this time vs the giants as payback from 2021
Yankees got Soto and Judge. They're gonna be scary too.
Trout Judge Yordan Alvarez Acuña and Bryce Harper all have higher lifetime OPS+ than Betts and Freeman.
So no, LA does not have 3 of the top 5 hitters in baseball.
I can't wait!! I'm expecting the Dodgers to have "most wins in a season", like maybe 145 out of 162 games and series. The record is 116 (1906-cubs and 2001-mariners).
As an Anaheim fan, I don't blame him for leaving it just proves yet again that Arte Moreno is the worst owner in sports and he is the 100% reason why the Angels have been bad for so many years. It's him #SellTheTeam
He changed the game. I wouldn’t be surprised In 10-15 years you’ll see the evolution of a pitcher. They are all most likely going to pitch and hit well
how did HE change the game? Babe Ruth did the same thing over 100 years ago, he isn't the first guy who can do both. Though he is one of the few who can do both as well as he does.
@@mooseheadjack1 I meant not a lot of pitchers hit 300 every year. Only him and Ruth did it and Ruth I think did it only two years. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more in the future hit 280 and up who are pitchers but can dh too
@@Arizonadude
but he doesn't. He is a lifetime .274 hitter. And, given that playing two positions puts them more at risk, I think Ohtani is going to be the exception, not the norm. If you rely on one guy to play two positions, when he gets hurt, you are have to replace two positions. It's just not really feasible.
Guess I'm a Dodgers fan again.
As a frequenter of Giants games, I was really hoping to have Pocari Sweat at Oracle Park. But why would Ohtani want to go from the Angels to essentially the Angels minus Trout
Why would the Shohei let alone any superstar want to go to the giants? It’s more than just the money
Because Shohei has no integrity and is manipulative:
Lie #1) Said he didn't want to play for a big market. Now he's on the biggest market. Just flat out lied.
Lie #2) Said he wouldn't sign with a team that leaked meetings. Roberts brazenly leaked their meeting. Shoehei lied.
I don't hate Shoehei at all but the man is a demonstrable liar. Nothing he says about his judgment can be trusted. False humility time is OVER he's a sellout like everyone else.
@@9inchpincher better than the shithole that is LA and the surrounding area.

Makes me sick!!
NO ONE deserves nor NEEDS that kind of $$$…
That’s more than some countries entire GDP
I think this being “good for baseball” is very, very much yet to be determined. He’s guaranteed to make more than some owners are worth. There’s a whole lot of scenarios where that isn’t good for baseball
It's shite for baseball. The NBA just restructured the way teams can spend because it almost killed their sport as well.
MLB is doomed now and if they don't control their own sport it will just topple over from overpaid common players.
After this I’m not watching baseball anymore. Why would I want to watch the same 4 teams sign everyone and make the playoffs every year. It’s a joke league now.
Doesn't work though. 10-12 teams spend big every year. Injuries and whatnot eliminate most of them every single year. Gotta spend to win in mlb usually. They share revenue. They can afford to at least try to spend a year every 5(frugal teams)
@@JT27607I feel you man. I see the same thing in other areas, even like in the work place, corporate environment, they crushed me when I realized it's not what I thought. But can't just walk away from it. The key is learn to deal with it and still enjoy the good parts. the saying "don't throw the baby out with the bath water.."
Personally think it’s terrible for the game
It makes a lot of sense paying that much money to Ohtani. On opening day next year, those Ohtani Jerseys will be SOLD OUT and each jersey will be $200 dollars each
Ohtani King of Sports!
People often say it's an overpayment, but when you consider all the off-the-field revenue, it's like you're paying for the support of an entire country like Japan, if not all of Asia. It's not just fans in Japan; he's an Asian athlete at the pinnacle of a major American sport, which is unprecedented. So, it's more than just Japan; he's the most marketable Asian athlete in the history of sports. He's worth more than any American athlete because of his international appeal.
Still overpaying
Japan doesnt count as "international appeal". 99% of people around the world never heared of him. In Africa its exactly 100%. Even Noah Lyles is more famous around the world, as an Olympic trackie that is... 700 mio are impossible to make in 10 years. Before taxes that means aprox 1.5 billion in revenue from game shirts. Dodgers have no endorsement rights in Japan...
@@FoxxyBrown1111you have no idea what you’re talking about lmao, Japan has one of the biggest economies in the world, and like the commenter said, it’s a big part of Asia we’re talking about and not just Japan. I’m sorry but no one cares about Africa, African countries don’t watch much baseball anyways, and lets be real, there’s not much $ to be made from consumers there. When has a single business ever said, “oh you know guys, we really need to penetrate the African market” 😂 None, cuz there’s almost nothing to be made there compared to other continents (well maybe charities to solicit donations lol).
Saying Noah Lyles is more famous is crazy lol. Even if he is right now (which he isn’t), Lyles plays a sport that is only relevant every four years. shohei is going to be playing basically multiple times a week, for one of the biggest teams in the league. You’re making a huge error in evaluating his level of stardom RIGHT NOW instead of his POTENTIAL fame. He is the current face of baseball despite being on a small market team that never made the playoffs, and plus Ohtani really only became a household name for the past 3 seasons now. You put him on a team like the Dodgers, he makes and wins some World Series, and you’ll see how wrong you are.
Ok, I bite Mr LMAO.
1) Again, Japan doesnt count as INTERNATIONAL appeal. Its ONE country. Again the news for you: The Dodgers gain zero, yes zero coins of any business Ohtani does there (mostly endorsment deals).
They certainly sell many overpriced Made-in-China game shirts there as in the USA, but after about two years the market will be mature. On a ten year scale its a negative balance (700 mio vs the short term profitable shirts business).
I only brought up Africa to underline the "international" argument as plain crap. No more, no less. I give you Europe: Same same, no one cares, no one knows Ohtani.
2) Yes Lyles is more famous. Other than in the USA, track is pretty popular around the world. Especially in JAPAN. Not only Olympics, but worlds and track meets too.
3) Everybody in the USA or Japan knows Ohtani by now. To play for the Dodgers doesnt change a thing. Its completely uncertain if the Dodgers win a WS with him, leave alone multiple. Pitching trumps batting. Always was, always will be. Thats another reason why TWO superstars couldnt turn the Angels into a winning team.
There is no potential fame, Ohtani already is at the peak of fame. From now on (most likely as a one way player) it goes downwards. In two or three years the next big thingy will be hyped by MSM... By then, max 5 WAR Ohtani will be just another guy of a dozen stars known to baseball fans only. It all will end up like the Cabrera, Rodriguez or Pujols monster contracts. No championships, but a big fat minus in the books.
Check facts next time before trying to lecture somebody in a arrogant way. Fanboism and worshipping do not change reality.

Now that it's done, it seems almost inevitable that he'll be injured for 2/3 of his career
100% this was a business decision first and foremost. Ticket sales, merch, Japan tv rights etc. Dodgers will make that money back eventually. I mean, just go to Dodger stadium, they're still selling Valenzuela jersey's about 30 years after his retirement and they still sell very well. This signing was much more than just baseball.

That's a Queens crown in the video, not a Kings crown. Just for reference 😂😂
Ohtani probably calling up Yamamoto like....."Yooooooooo"
I used to go to Angeles games with my best friend. It’s crazy to see he’s now a dodger. I joked saying if he doesn’t resign as a angel let’s keep him in La so we can both still watch him little did I know it would actually happen
Several days ago Joe Kelly was asked if he is willing to give up his number 17. That's the last thing in negotiations. Not sure why that wasn't a bigger clue for people.
I wonder how much Ohtani’s ‘unprecedented deferred’ amount changes front office strategy ? For a player on their first / pre-arb contracts, probably not. They want that cash now and understandably so. But in that 28-32 age range, it could see a totally new strategy….. even if only for a handful of teams or a handful of players (both of whom want to be there deep into October). How much upper-tier payroll could they unlock now by pushing more money down the road ? It almost becomes a new tier of perceived salary cap all by itself 😳
With all realness the Dodgers could have one of the greatest trio's in sports history MOOKIE BETTS, FREDDIE FREEMAN, AND THEN SHOHEI OHTANI
and yet they will still lose in the playoffs.
We do need a Salary cap on Baseball tbh. Rich teams always in on talks for every player even if they already spending 220 million 💀
we need a cap, and a floor. It will prevent the nonsense that the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets (among other big market teams) do, and also keep teams like Oakland from paying their entire team less than some individual players make.
“Ohtani is the closest thing baseball has had to a celebrity” - A Rod looks down at his feet, take a deep breath, grabs his monitor and throws it at the wall - “AHHHHHHHHHHH”
Side Note: Corey Seager who was drafted by the Dodgers, was meant to be extended with the original team. But instead he signed with the Rangers for 10Y/$325M. That’s less than a half of Ohtani’s new contract with the same number of years.
if healthy seager can only do half of what ohtani can do. both mvp level of course but ohtani is worth more while healthy
RIP any small market team affording any player worth anything. Everyone that’s good or great is now going to demand a minimum of $30M-35M per year because “Ohtani got $70M per year so I’m at least worth half that.” Think I’m crazy? The same thing happened when A-Rod signed with the Rangers for $250M. That was the beginning of inflated contracts across baseball.
Ohtani is the exception not the norm. Plus you have to look at the value that he brings off the field from merch, marketing, etc
@@Wolf-wc1jssame could have been said about A-Rod, but he’ll definitely be an endorsement gold mine. And most Dodger games will be sold out during his tenure there
Ohtani is an exception because he brings so much to the game of baseball. That kind of player needs to be in big market. He'd be wasted on a team like the Gaurdians or Brewers
