Yukon Bound - Alaska Highway Overlanding Adventure Ep.1
Driving to the Yukon, we used a Toyota 4Runner to haul an off-road trailer. My wife Tori and I were totally self-sufficient, hauling a place to camp, cook and eat with outfitting in tow. We were totally off-grid for five days on this cross Canada road trip. Winter Overlanding across a country known for winter had us feeling a little nervous, particularly because we were bringing our toddler Wesley with us. Camping with kids has its challenges. In the episode, we pass the Lake Superior north shore and stop at Old Woman Bay where there are some surreal ice formations. Once in the Yukon, we'd say in an off-grid log cabin while exploring the surrounding mountains for a couple weeks before moving on to other adventures in the territory. Never the less, a great adventure was had.

Jim you and your family are the type of people me and my wife would love to meet and caravan camp with. You guys do all the things we like to do like pull over for views , rough it a bit and have the confidence to make journeys like ya do. It always fun when me and my wife go on adventures but its even more fun when you have friends along who are into it as much as we are but they are hard to find. Thanks for filming your incredible adventure and taking us along for the ride. I always feel like I’m going on the whole trip with you guys because of the excellent camera and editing work y’all do. I never feel like I’m missing something or there’s never any guessing on lost time in your videos because you always cover everything to make the story complete. Take care you guys and who knows, maybe we’ll meet up on the road someday... safe travels to you all. By the way I always carry a tire plug kit and a good compressor for those flat tires... i find it’s so much easier to plug a tire than it is to change it.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  Před 2 lety +3

Thanks a lot, ya that’s true…I think a lot of people don’t underhand that just because they didn’t see something in the video, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen in real life. For example I’m getting a lot of people telling me I should have brought a compressor snd a tire plug kit. Which I did, I just didn’t get around to filing it. Funny too have there’s such baring comments on our son. Some think we’re the best parents in the world snd some think we’re horrible for bringing him on this trip. For videos that have dogs or kids in them and get a lot of views, that type of thing is pretty standard. Glad you’re enjoying it and thanks a lot for watching.

11:30 stress is when all of the Banquets freeze and pop open, Wesley had to recover from being blasted with Artic air. V means Vanadium often mixed with chromiun and or nickel to form very hard alloys, the metallugist in me coming out. It is a beauty knife. It was cool watching this epic roadtrip again, really enjoyed Wesley pitching in on the narration, he travels really well, a little trooper. waiting for the rest of the height of land series. Thanks Jim, Tori and especially Wesley for sharing. It's a balmy 10C in Edmundston at 1:30 so I'm heading out on my motorcycle, gotta ride while you can.

OMG, I can't get my head around why some people seem to feel the need to post such horrible comments, but glad to see most of them are positive.
This trip looks absolutely amazing, what an experience! Sure, it's not for everyone, but if we all enjoyed doing the same things life would be incredibly dull! I would absolutely love to try something like this, but as I have never lived anywhere with snow (or critters that want to eat me) I think I'd have to take along a local expert! Just the challenge, the beauty, and getting to do it with your family - awesome! Keep adventuring, Baird Family!

Big thanks! Ya, sometimes people don’t understand that just because I don’t show something in the video, doesn’t meant I didn’t have it or that it didn’t happen. For example I don’t think I showed my tire plug kit or compressor, well I had those things but I never filmed them and a lot of comments are calling me out for not having them lol. Like do you think I just held my pee the whole time because I never filmed myself going to the washroom? But it goes with the territory on CZcams so you have to take it with a grain of salt. This was an awesome road trip and an awesome experience. The Alaska Highway was extremely beautiful to say the least.

Awesome overlanding adventure by Jim is a test of great patience, endurance, temperament, trust and belief to do the unbelievable. I really admire his kid, Wesley, so cute, quiet and well behaved. Thank you Jim for your nice video. I don't have the privilege to experience such a long and wonderful adventure because I live in Kuantan, Malaysia with rain and hot sun all year round. Absolutely love the stuff you're putting out. The highlight of my week is when I log in and see something new from Jim. Something that may bore a lot of people but I would be especially interested in seeing the planning and preparation process. You hint at some of it in the main trip videos ("This is something that Tori made and dehydrated...", "My wife printed off these maps for me...", "This entire bag is nothing but camera equipment and batteries...", "There are no notes on this river, so I'm working entirely from the Government of Canada Topo maps...") which is nice to include, but I'd really be interested in everything that goes on before you load up the car.
Do you do any pre-trip reconnaisence? For example I'm planning for Ishpatina Ridge next year (I've had back luck in that area previously - old GPS data sent me down a LONG decommissioned road which led to me driving out on two flat tires - well I changed one, but I didn't have two spares. That's why this summer's trip had me carrying two of my winter tires just in case.) so I went up there last month to scout the put-in. It's supposed to start with a 4.5km portage and I wanted to see how rough it is. Turns out it's a road, so I'm going to get/make a canoe cart *or* if I'm brave enough to ford the Sturgeon with my Subaru, I can drive right to an excellent boat launch. But I went up there specifically to determine that.
So anyway, would love to see your planning process.

Your trip up to the Yukon brought back many great memories. That snowstorm you ran into the other side of Wawa is typical around that area. One day in the early 90s when I was heading back to the Soo after working in the Wawa area, I was driving south of Wawa after 10pm and ran into one of those blinding snow storms. The most I could do was between 35 and 45 Mph for speed while I was straining to see anything in front of me. All of a sudden, at about 10:30pm, out of the snow and blackness in front of my vehicle, a cow moose decided to cross the highway. Good thing I was not going too fast or I might have hit it. After the encounter I was wondering why the moose thought it needed to cross the road at that time of night and in those conditions. (Why did the moose cross the road. LOL) Anyway, by the time I was about 40 miles south of Wawa the storm had completely abated.
Near the end of November 1983, my wife and I left the Soo to move up to Inuvik NWT, mainly for work reasons. (The recession of 1982 was especially hard on those of us in our early 20s, so we took the big leap and adventure to work up in the western arctic).
When we left the Soo it was snowing, and everything we had in the world was in our small, 2 door, front wheel drive 1980 Oldsmobile Omega, including our cat. It was packed pretty tight.
Here are the places we stopped after each day's travel: Thunderbay, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Whitecourt (a little northwest of Edmonton), Fort Nelson (we stayed there an extra day), Whitehorse, Dawson City, Eagle Plains (a government run motel and gas station high up in the Yukon mountains about halfway up the last 641 Kms to Inuvik). Finally, on December 7th, 10 days after we had left the Soo, we arrived in Inuvik to a nice 45 C below 0 and on the first day that the sun stays below the horizon for a month.
(Inuvik is about 120 miles north of the arctic circle.)
The most harrowing part of the trip that involved almost running out of gas was that first 216 miles or so from Dawson City to Eagle Plains up in the northern Yukon mountains.
My 1980 Omega had a 2.8 L V6 engine and was pretty good on gas. I could usually go about 200 miles and still have half a tank of fuel left, so after leaving Dawson City with a full tank, I figured we were good to go. The weather was clear and calm, just cold.(45 C below).
After noting the sign that stated the distance to Eagle Plains, I calculated what the odometer would be showing when we would arrive.
A couple of factors I had not thought about in regard to gas mileage was the extreme cold, plus the climb up into the mountains and the even colder temperatures up in the mountains. There was a period of about 15 minutes, about halfway in our drive, quite high in the mountains, where we noticed that our windshield was starting to fog over, starting from the top and slowly moving down. I put my hand over the defrost vents and the air coming out only had a hint of warmth, even though we had the temperature setting on full hot. It must have got down to the minus 60s outside I thought.
After about 15 minutes or so, the windshield was able to clear, but around that time I noticed that our fuel consumption was more than usual.
I was really worried when the fuel gauge got down into the red. I don't recall how long we were driving in the red, but we were greatly concerned about running out of fuel on that road. On that lonely stretch of highway, the only vehicle you might see that time of year is a RCMP suv that patrol the road once every 24 hours. Anyway, I looked at the odometer and noticed that we should be almost at Eagle Plains, and when I looked up, over on the next mountain peak, we saw the radio tower and buildings of Eagle Plains. We were both very relieved to get to that oasis!
The next 3 years that we lived in Inuvik were very adventurous to say the least, but it is something we can look back with fondness and appreciation now that health issues limit what we are able to do.
Thanks again for the great memory jog!
