- I join up with my friend Sam, a retired Air Force pilot and retired Delta pilot. We go out on his boat, a Catalina 22, for a step-by-step guide to rigging and hoisting the spinnaker.
Thanks to Sam's wife, Catherine, for providing some cool spinnaker photos at 0:25 and 0:26.

Many thanks!
No thank you sir
@@JoshPostVlogs Yes. Thank you! Youre a great teacher because you can put yourself in the shoes of your students. Something most teachers here on youtube forget about.
Theyre not mean spirited but theyre so used to sailing and its terminology they forget whats important.

My whole family just watched your video together and WENT OUT AND DID IT!!! We've been staring at that Spinnaker pole for the whole summer. THANK YOU!
That is awesome! Thanks for the comment!
Good video, Josh. One tip is to attach the topping lift before you detach the pole from the stanchion. In this way the pole remains attached to the boat and won’t disappear into Neptune’s locker if you find yourself imbalanced and letting go of it - a more likely situation when you are first learning or sailing offshore.
When I take a break in the studio, I watch your productions. Very good production, narration and presentation, Well edited.
This has got to be the best spinnaker flying lesson i have ever seen. Thank you!
Josh Post = King of NO BS thorough sailing tutorials... and other stuff
The video is a bit older but oh boy it's the best instructions I have seen!! Signed up for a two day spinnaker training on Lake Thun, Switzerland this weekend and I'm ready to make all the mistakes with confidence.
I just bought a 22' Catalina in St Petersburg, Fl. Thanks!
Nice little boat. Nice one 👌
You are the bees knees when it comes to explaining everything!
Interspersing one camera angle with another and the add in diagrams all help first timers
I often wonder if youve had a teaching background(?)
AND all done without the imbiquous click bait.
Excellent vid. You are the man!!
Spyglass Freo West Aus - Many thanks! I don't have a teaching background but I'm a trial lawyer so I learned early the importance of plain speaking to engage the listener (jury). Otherwise, people will tune out with too much legalese. I think the same applies to sailing, or anything really. Plus, I'm from Missouri - the "show me" state and the home of Harry Truman who was known for his "plain speaking." Cheers and happy sailing!
Two viewings of this video have me feeling decently prepared to get a spinnaker for Grendel the Ranger 20, my first sailboat.
Just what I needed to see. Thank you!
