- This Grotto is an amazing tribute to the life of Jesus and tells story of Jesus Christ. The Grotto of Redemption contains the largest collection of precious rocks, crystals, stones and gems found anywhere in one location - petrified wood, stalactite/stalagmite, malachite, jasper, quartz, crystals, geodes and many more. Located in West Bend Iowa. There are also Italian mosaics and Carrara marble statutes.
Here are 6 fascinating things you probably never knew about this “Miracle in Stone”:
1. Grotto of the Redemption is the largest man-made grotto in the world.
2. It's also the largest collection of gems and precious stones in any one place.
3. The Grotto is estimated to be home to about $4.3 million worth of gems.
4. The Grotto took over 90 years to complete...
5. ... And it was the result of one man surviving pneumonia.
6. The Grotto is divided into nine different grottos, each of which depicts a scene in Jesus' life.
The Shrine of the Grotto of the Redemption, a religious shrine in West Bend, Iowa, in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux City, is a conglomeration of nine grotto depicting scenes in the life of Jesus, which contains a large collection of minerals at an estimated value of over $4,308,000; it sets the world record for being the World’s Largest Man-made Grotto, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
As parish priest at Saint Peter and Paul's Church, Priest Dobberstein began to stockpile massive amounts of fieldstone, rocks, and boulders in 1901, but he did not begin to build in earnest until 1912. He continued work on the grotto until his death in 1954. Dobberstein attributed the grotto tradition to the Middle Ages, when shepherds attending their flocks in the hills sought refuge from storms in natural grottos, or caves. There, they adorned the interiors with holy pictures and crucifixes, placing them over small altars to give the appearance of a church sanctuary.
His creation even caught the attention of Walt Disney who wanted to construct a replica of the grotto for Disneyland but was told by his engineering consultants that the structure was a “once in a lifetime” piece that couldn’t be matched.It’s crafted out of metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rocks with marble statues, replete with the following: polished agate, azurite, fluorite, malachite, druzy quartz, petrified wood, fossils, corals, shells, pink quartz, jasper, topaz, amethyst, calcite, pudding stone, marble, and geodes. You can even spot mudball formations taken from the Cannonball River in North Dakota. Twenty-three karat gold leaf peppers the premises.
The nine grottos:
Garden of Eden -Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit and are cast out.
• Stable of Bethlehem -The Divine Child is born. (Completed after Dobberstein’s death).
• Home in Nazareth - Jesus’ boyhood home and humble beginnings are depicted. (Completed after Dobberstein’s death).
• Trinity -One God in three Persons is symbolized in three half circles.
• Ten Commandments -Man is told to keep the Commandments to gain eternal life.
• Gethsemane -Christ is shown praying and suffering on eve of the crucifixion.
• Stations of the Cross -Christ is degraded, crucified and dies for all.
• Fourteenth Station -Christ is buried.
• Resurrection -Christ is not here, in the grave; He has risen.
