    People constantly slag off the MX112 and the MX212 but they sound awesome! I think it's people who have paid fortunes for their cabs and can't stand that the entry level one's are great too. They want the good sounding cabs to only be their expensive ones.

      @@MrRicardodon both have their strengths and weaknesses. Marshall a bit expensive, but has got the effects loop inputs to plugin your favourite pedals if you have many. Katana is like a swiss army knife, multiple effects, with apps where you can tweak with just your phone. But it lacks the option to connect your pedals. In this case better to go for the 100 version (combo or head).
      I would summarise by saying, if you are just starting out the Katana is a better option. But if you have a specific sound and it can be achieved only through Marshall (which I'm sure can be tweaked in a katana), then go for it. Hope this helps.

    Sure records well with an SM57. I think I need to give this wee stack a test drive. I really liked the way this sounded and I think running at 0.1W would keep my neighbours happy. [ Eight months later ... ] I wound up buying the wee combo version of this amp. While the 8" speaker and open-back cab don't sound as big as the MX112, it's got enough meat to keep me happy. More importantly, the neighbours just barely tolerate it. One thing that your demo missed is that the Classic Gain channel gets a really credible JCM800 crunch happening when you get the volume higher. That green channel isn't just for clean. It gets that '80s Classic Rock sound very nicely. As well, the unit is much happier with some high-quality tubes. It really makes the amp come alive.

    • @muriloescher8607
      @muriloescher8607 Před 3 lety

      I'm thinking about getting the combo in the future, when you said that the neighbors "barely tolerate it", do you mean it's loud enough to bother them even when it is as low as you can set it so that you can hear it yourself? I fear any volume loud enough would be almost too loud...

    • @TraneFrancks
      @TraneFrancks Před 3 lety +2

      @@muriloescher8607 Its gain channel has a master volume, so you can get a distorted sound at whisper-quiet volumes. I'm a boomer, however, so my preferred tones are all on the "classic gain" channel, which doesn't break up until you push the output stage a fair bit. So, take my comment with the understanding that if you're a high-gain guy (or you push the front end with boost, overdrive and/or distortion pedals), you'll easily get distortion. If your idea of a signal chain is guitar -> tuner -> amp and you're going into the classic gain channel, you'll need some volume to get breakup. Even 0.1 Watts is somewhat loud cranked. Don't expect a classic gain channel dimed at 3 a.m. experience in a flat unless your neighbours are partying and tolerant.

    • @TraneFrancks
      @TraneFrancks Před 3 lety +2

      The cool thing about the classic gain channel is that if your Strat is too bright, just crank the volume to get more compression to take off the top end bite. Dimed, my Strat even has usable tone on the bridge pickup. More interestingly, rolling treble on the amp to zero dramatically increases gain and produces quite a marvellous tone. Tele bridge pickup REALLY likes it.

      @@lorthern4118 I usually have amp's treble and mid at 12 o'clock and bass dimed. The higher the volume, the more I roll back the bass to help keep it somewhat tight. Depending on how bright your pickups are, you may want to increase top end as you get closer to dimed volume. And, as the old "dimed Marshall" implies, there's great joy to be had in just taking volume, treble, mid and bass and just winding 'em all fully clockwise. Ultimately, just experiment. The combination of guitar, pickups, guitar vol/tone and amp vol/tone controls create nearly unlimited variations.
      I find that my LP Special's P-90s interact with the amp quite differently than, say, my Tele's '64 Pure Vintage pickups. Oh, and the amp's treble knob can be rolled back to minimum to increase gain, which can net a really interesting tonal effect. Enjoy the journey. :)

      @@Cheximus got the Harley Benton vintage 212, horizontal. After shipping to USA still only $318. Marshall mx212 with particleboard and 70/80's cost $499 before tax. Easy choice. I definitely recommend ordering from Thomanns website. Way cheaper than US prices. They even have the MX cabinet for, I think about $240. Plus shipping. I wish Marshall would at least put V-plus speakers instead of the 70/80's. Maybe I should try one before bashing too hard. But the Harley Benton quality is nice. Took the back panel off the other day. Beautiful poplar plywood. Looked brand new and fresh. Smells nice too.

    ok i got the head and the cab.and i can tell you this if you want to make them sound amazing this is what i did to the cab,i changed the speaker straight away cause it fart nomatter what .the 70 /80 is crap.i put in a celestion greenback g12m from 1971 original in clean condition .you can hear the difference in tone on my channel.really change the speaker first no necessary a green back original but a new one will work amazing or a v30 celestion .then i changed the valves in the head to 60s mullards i know they cost alot but if you are a tone freak like me you will.then i put an ibanez st 9 original from 1984 super tube screamer in front of it .and hear the difference.
    with a gibson or a strat it sound amazing.

    • @MrAnders1976
      @MrAnders1976 Před 4 lety

      Why does the 70/80 fart ? it is a 80W rated speaker with heavy doping. But I agree that the celestion 70/80 is not a good fit for marshall type amps..Also VOX puts this speaker in their very bright VOX AC4-c1 in a small closed back cab which is the wrong speaker for the cab and circuit. . Marshall amps tend to have pretty strident upper mids and the celestion 70/80 has that in spades, and the lack of low mids in the 70/80 and focus on highs mids make it sound better in an open back configuration. A really well broken in 70/80 sounds nice in my friends YCV40. An american sounding amp with a large baltic birch plywood open back cab (not dead MDF).. Speakers like the celestion vintage 30 sound better in small closed back cab as it limits the mids a bit, lift the resonance frequency so you get more audible punchy bass..
      PS: the 70/80 takes a long time to break in.. It might be the amount of doping.
      I have a solid state DV micro 50 amp which is said to sound a little like a darker fender silverface amp, without a bright cap,, the mid control work on lower mids,, the bass pot is too excessive (keep it 10' oclock) , and the treble needs a little boost (2 o'clock),, This amps lacks the upper mid presence of a marshall amp and the celestion 70/80 is a good fit.. I have a smooth sounding eminence legend GB128 but with the DV mark it lacks cutting midrange.. The GB128 works wonders in bright marshall amps though..

    • @TraneFrancks
      @TraneFrancks Před 3 lety +1

      My DeArmond M-75 (Gold Tone humbuckers) and Gibson Les Paul Special w P-90s see breakup on the classic gain channel (power set to 0.1 W) with the volume knob at about 11 o'clock. The single coils on the Tele and Strat need more of a twist of the knob, but the output is basically the same. Strat and Tele like a bit more overall volume to tame the bridge pickups via compression.

    • @TraneFrancks
      @TraneFrancks Před 3 lety +1

      @@neoaureus I suppose it depends on what vintage of Orange you consider "Orange". Is it a Matlab or later? Same somewhat applies to the Marshall question. The DSL1xR amp strives to mimic the tone and gain of a JCM800 on the classic gain channel, so you need to balance that versus the vintage of Orange you're hoping to emulate. If you want a late-'70s/early-'80s Orange tone on the Marshall classic gain channel, you won't get there directly, but a treble boost pedal might help you get closer. Ultimately, if you really want the Orange sound, you want an Orange amp. But, yes, if you like the JCM800-type of grind, you'll enjoy this amp. Just note that if you really want that big bottom, you'll want the head and separate cab instead of the combo. The combo is more mids-focused and the bottom end is a little more loose (typical of open-back combos vs sealed cabs).
