Did not expect to see this today
When I first heard Kid A it was on a 4 hour road trip across Utah. I left at 6 Am and had to relisten to the entire album again because I was so struck by the music ascending my ears. I still remember the sunrise while Idioteque played as I drove alongside a massive wall of fog to my left, and plumes of fog sprites spread around to my right. Most magical moment I've had with music in my life.
I guess you could say you experienced Fog (Again).
Saw the PS event, didn't expect something like this. When the music came I was like:"wait, THIS IS RADIOHEAD"

Best band to ever exist ful stop
20 years ago, Kid A confused me. As an 18 year old who'd loved the Bends and Ok Computer it was just such a massive change in style. Today I really now understand what a masterpiece it truly is.
20 years ago Kid A is what got me into Radiohead. And then Amnesiac. And then I got OKC and The Bends. Starting with the "heavy lifting" made it a lot easier for me to get into the more approachable stuff of OKC and The Bends.
@@SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggington That's really cool. I've never really thought about it from the perspective that people have come on board the Radiohead experience from Kid A. When Kid A launched my mates and myself were all so confused as to what the hell was going on. No music videos apart from the short 10 second blip idents, no tours, no interviews and the album itself being full of ambient electronic weirdness.
It seemed crazy at the time, now it seems like the best decision they could have made. Sure they could have brought another OK Computer out and been a stadium band, but they stuck to having artistic integrity and not selling out to the labels and yes men which is so commendable.
I was 16, and I still remember sitting on my bed the day it came out, staring down at my Discman (lol) thinking “What IS this? I think I love it… but I don’t understand why!”
I remember the backlash well. Way back then they had a thing called a blog that they were posting to during the recording sessions. I would check it everyday even though I knew they did not post to it that often. And then a couple of the tracks leaked but the versions I had were mislabeled. Idioteque was Morning Bell. The National Anthem was Optimistic. Those were departures, but not nearly as much as other tracks.
When the album finally dropped, I knew some people that were outraged. Why were they burying Thom in the mix and putting effects all over the voice of an Angel? It was an acquired taste, but I was such a zealot that I play it on repeat and relished the articles and MTV News reports of people not getting it for the album, he revealed how close they were to breaking up before recording. I thought it might be their last album.
They played a short set on MTV. I don't remember if it was during one of their regular episodic shows or if it was a one-off. But they opened with their there. And then of course they played the episode of Saturday Night Live and blew the roof off of skyscraper. From then on, everybody was full steam ahead.
@@OzyMandias13 Wow I remember that as well, but had totally forgotten until you mentioned it. Dead Air Space I think it was called?
Because I heard these so many times I recognized that Amnesiac loop right away at the beginning, but I was like nah, I'm probably crazy. Then Everything In It's Right Place started playing and I was like oh it's a game using Radiohead songs, neat. AND THEN--

Same thought exactly upon my first viewing.
@@tubinonyou Control is the best video game I've ever played. Only Last Of Us and Final Fantasy 7 (the original) come close.
@@11cylynt11 I don't disagree. I've beaten the game 3 times now (Xbox One, PC and, now, the next gen upgrade for Series X). Control is a masterpiece and, without question, in my top 3 games of all time.
@@tubinonyou me too! I played it 1st on Xbox1x. Did every side quest. Then the ultimate edition went on sale for PC and I said "well it must be way better on PC" plus the DLCs. I didn't even mind that in order to play the DLCs, I had to start the game without my progress from the Xbox. I enjoyed re-experiencing it from the start as the story is very intriguing.

Shoutout to the music reviewer in my local paper back in 2000, much more of an “ok boomer” than “OK Computer” kind of guy, who nevertheless gave this album a fair shake and had his whole mind BLOWN. I will never forget reading this human embodiment of a high school teacher’s moustache-whose name was somehow simultaneously Dave, John, and Maurice-confess to hundreds of thousands of newspaper subscribers that he cried *at the title track*, and in turn, my own teenage mind was opened to the idea that maybe, just maybe, not all adults were doomed to completely suck.
