- In this episode of ‘Editorial’, Mr. Sujit Nair discusses how ‘Freebies’ are now being used as a poll strategy in Indian elections. Mr. Nair discusses the recently launched ‘Majhi Ladki Bahin Scheme’ launched by the BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra which promises Rs. 1500 monthly to women between the age of 21-60 age group. Many state governments like Punjab, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka have launched such social schemes. But these schemes come with a toll on the state budget.

You're absolutely right Sujith. Freebies are a nuisance for the upper middle class which gets nothing free, but pays for the freebies. This class of people is under the highest pressure of taxation with no returns.
There was a time when individuals were moved by the desire to serve, but that was then.....Today self service and self preservation is trending. This is where democracy has fallen short. If man is compromised, how far will a country go?

This year, a large population of Delhi suffered from water supply. You need money to develop infra. Now don't get into politics by blaming neighbouring state govts for water floods or water supply in Delhi. I am blaming all the parties here.
If you give freebies, you cannot develop infra. This disease of freebies have to be rooted out.
The revadi culture used by Mr. Nair was first used Modi.
But if people for the time being vote for freebie the parties like congress and BJP cannot be left behind till the time the reality hits people that freebies is not sustainable.
There used be a subsidy culture in India till late 80s and that almost brought us to economic collapse by early 90s

Sujit ji, your messages to the public is always an eye opener and this editorial is not different from that. It is a mind awakening and people need to think about the freebies. People in poverty will remain in the same state and the middle class will be loaded with taxes. In this only middle and upper middle class are the sufferers. In next election let people think about this and vote.

Sorry, apologies for the ignorance on how to manage my message. But basically, I was saying that the reality of life is a lot more complex than just teaching someone how to fish! I am a humanitarian and development worker doing exactly the things you are saying here for the past 30 plus years, 8 of them in India and then overseas. Please understand that skill development is not enough.

True. Telengana started free travel for women. Nowadays most the women using public transport and people are traveling to native places too often putting employers in trouble. For maids we give two paid leaves, then partial leaves, sick leave etc all paid . Hardly they 1.5 hrs perday

Politicians are too smart, and what, they call freebies, are in fact not free. Money needs to be invested whether in goods or services, or both. That money in fact comes from the citizens of this country, whether in the form of taxes or GST, or on every commodity and services bought on a daily basis. All, what governments call freebies, are in fact paid by the people. But the politicians misappropriate this credit to themselves, and that is nothing less than cheating/deceiving.
