  • September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a time to reflect on the harmful legacy of Canada's Indian Residential School System, recognize the strength and resiliency of Indigenous Peoples in the face of colonial oppression, and act on the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.
From the 1870s to 1996, Canadian governments removed more than 150,000 Indigenous children from their families and communities. Estimates are that more than 6,000 Indigenous children died while attending Canada’s Indian Residential School System. Staff and leadership at the City of Vancouver grieve alongside Indigenous colleagues and with Indigenous communities across Canada.
As a local government, the City of Vancouver acknowledges the responsibility it has, along with all levels of government, to repair the harms caused by Residential Schools and rebuild a healthy relationship between Indigenous Peoples and all Canadians. Justin Trudeau : All Canadians and the world should know this story.
In 2018 on your watch as Prime Minister of Canada, 10,500 native Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland had their native status taken away, by the federal government most because they moved out of their community in search of work to feed their families and have a better life. After many years of fighting the federal government and over 400 years of history the Newfoundland Mi’kmaq were finally granted their rightful native status. Then, the Government of Canada and the leadership of the Qalipu band came up with a scheme to change things, to reduce the numbers. These plans included forcing all members of the Qalipu band , legitimate Mi’kmaq to prove that they deserved their status and deserved to keep their membership in the Qalipu band as founding members. This was a first for native people anywhere in Canada. It did not matter that you were Mi’kmaq all that mattered was , could you get the 13 points needed to keep your status and to remain in the band and these points had to be gotten within a narrow window of just a 5 years. You may have been born, raised and spent 50 years of your life in your Mi’kmaq community, but all that mattered was could you provide enough evidence in this narrow window of time. You were given points for trips to the community, phone calls, pictures taken in the community or at a pow wow etc. You also were given points for communication and and proof of practicing the Mi’kmaq way of life. Brothers and sisters of the same family, even a set of twins were separated, torn apart by status. How could you as the Prime minister at this time allow such an insane act of cruelty to take place to children of the same family. So may Mi’kmaq families today are now broken, shattered by this insane act of cruelty and this has all been brushed under the carpet by the federal government of Canada. Mr Trudeau you talk an awful lot about reconciliation, but your silence this regard , speaks volumes of the real Justin Trudeau.
I am 65 years of age now and the youngest of 9 children , I am Mi’kmaq and I was born, raised and lived almost half of my life in my Mi’kmaq community, I was granted 11 points out of 13 , I was just short 2 points. Now listen to this , I got zero points for communicating with my community, 2 were available and I got zero. I got zero points for practicing my Mi’kmaq culture, 9 points were available. Imagine, almost 30 years living in my community and I got zero points for communication and practicing my culture. I have traveled to my community since I have moved away many many times and I have communicated with my community thousands of times over the years. I still practice my culture but still I got zero points for practicing my culture and had my status taken away. Most of my family kept their status. I was given 11 points short 2. I have protested , I have sent so many emails to you and others but I keep getting the same response, we are sorry. What happened here in 2018 to to the Mikmaq of Newfoundland is nothing less than pure cruelty. It was an act of pure ignorance an injustice like no other to a native people and this has to be made public to all Canadians. All Canadians and the world must know the truth about the supplemental agreement and how it destroyed the Newfoundland Mi’kmaq family. They must know this story and I will spend the rest of my life telling this story to whom ever will listen. Here is a snap shot of the points I got , born, raised and lived almost 30 years in my community.
You know nothing about reconciliation .
