It's because most kpop listeners aren't adults. They treat kpop groups like how sports fans treat their local team. It's not about the music. It's about cheering on your team no matter what garbage they may come out with. This is coming from an adult kpop listener. It's best not to over think things in the kpop world since it's main audience are adolescents 🤷♂️

As someone who has been listening to K-Pop for about 12 years now, I have a ton of favourite groups that have been around for a while. I have never gotten tired of listening to them.
I fell for them because their music was my taste. So regardless of whether they release trendy music or not, their music will always be my taste.
Trends don't last long. Groups that connect with you without using what's trendy, are the best.
I've been a Shawol and MeU for 12 years and they're still my ult male and female groups (even though f(x) is basically disbanded) 💖
BoA got me into KPop back in freaking 2003 (thank you Inuyasha!) and is so weird see how the fandom culture shifted at some point in the 3rd gen… people got hyper focused on YT views, viral moments, the idols clearly feel the pressure cause they act less and less carefree and authentic on variety and vlives.
Earlier 4th gen groups - Idle, Loona, ITZY, etc - feel completely different than groups that debuted just 3 years later and imo the pandemic and lots of people stuck at home really defined the gen as the online hype based one.
Main reason I can't stay loyal to new groups is bc I am mainly focused more on the old I already stanned and still do and since lots of the 2nd generation are kinda inactive, I am still here with them but inactive as a kpop stan and more like a casual listener.

@OrangeCarnation Beautiful Monster concept is so similar to their other work overall, it has the same STAYC vibe and of course the same style because of the same producers, and yes I don't get how people say this is a "sudden" concept change because to me it's not sudden at all.

Imagine unstanning a group because of one "bad" song when you can just listen to their other songs? I must admit, Beautiful Monster was their weakest comeback (by audience) but it's literally in my bop playlist. That's how powerful STAYC's discography is.
It's similar to the saying, mistakes overshadow achievements.

my theory is that Beautiful Monster came out around the same time as other newer groups blowing up like IVE and NewJeans. BM was actually the song that got me into stayc so its definitely not a 'bad' song. they were just overshadowed.
yeah thats what i thought too. so many from big companies debuted/ had a comeback so i think its just people were more focused on the other releases than staycs.
Yeah, I feel like that too. That time period had so many popular groups/artists having comebacks like the post Queendom 2 groups, BTS, Nayeon, Fromis_9, Aespa, ITZY, SVT, NCTU, etc. It was so competitive just in the June/July time period alone. Pretty sure attention just got spread thin for a lot of groups in general/people having tunnel vision for their ult groups. Then when you compare their success to the explosive popularity of the post Izone groups+NJ it's a bit unfair.

I think most 'success' just ome from a really big/well established or commited fanbase. but as a non stayc fan, i think the girls are doing pretty well considering.

TBH I don't feel like it's just stayc, i feel like recently 4th gen girl groups are almost being treated like fast fashion... first it was itzy, then aespa, ive, and now new jeans, of course stayc is there as well. While some could argue that it could be a decline in music quality, or lack of comebacks, the gp start to lose interest after 3 comebacks maybe even 4 but that is stretching it. Yes, maybe every comeback will have more album sales and are still gaining more and more views for each new mv, but it is more by dedicated fan compared to casual listeners or new ones as well. I feel like this is only a cycle recently every year we have a new girl group that is potential for THE top gg of 4th gen. While boy groups may not have the side of the gp, they still have more consistant support and growth compared to ggs.

This is what I have been saying all time. I feel like Most of GG's successful era is Rookie era (Itzy, Aespa, StayC, Everglow). The public is just interested in NEW things. I personally even doubt IVE, Kep, Lesserafim, NJ and Nmixx.

Kpop stans being so young is the reason why pre established popularity or trendy songs is what comes before genuinely good music.
Ive been into kpop since i was 12 ( I'm 15 now ) have noticed that the fans have gotten way more toxic over the years, especially on tiktok which makes me not want to make friends that are also into kpop

As a listener from 2008 till now I can attest to this. The younger the fan the more clueless they often are. Also too just younger people in general act out of emotion rather than fact of reason.
They released Beautiful Monster knowing that it wouldn't go as viral as their previous title tracks, because they wanted to show another side of themselves, they wanted to show growth... They (StayC members and their producer) actually care about their art, they actually make music, like REAL music, that sounds good AND has meaning AND creates emotions. If they lose audience because people are not mature enough to understand that music is not about popularity, then let it be. The ones who'll stay will stay for the music, which is all that matters

I agree with you. But, also in the kpop industry if they lack recognition then might end up in a bad thing. Aside from bankruptcy it's also means that they'll disband the Group. I was going to comment the exact same thing, beautiful monster is really good, I love it. I did realize it wasn't as trendy as others they have done so it wasn't as popular, but not that it was so unappreciated.

Beautiful Monster is the reason why StayC is now my ult girl group (next to Twice and IVE) . StayC has such a beautiful dynamic and I refuse to believe that they’ve “fallen off”. Whether they’re trending or not, StayC will always thrive!!

Funnily enough, the group as well as its producers predicted that Beautiful Monster was not going to be as much of a hit as their other title tracks. Hopefully knowing this BEP will produce awesome songs that can allow STAYC to continue growing in popularity and success.
you are right. They knew it was a very different more mature vibe than they had been producing and they as well as their producer were willing to take the risk. I think it was a good call. The song isnt my favorite but its still good, and will work to move their full concept forward for the long haul, not just to be trendy right now.

This makes me so sad. Stayc is actually my favorite girl group of the 4th gen (and are actually my ult girl group next to Twice). I love their sound (and yes, that includes Beautiful Monster). They have some insane B-sides and all of the members have incredible vocal range. I became a fan earlier this year and I have never regretted it. Was Beautiful Monster my favorite title? No. But I did enjoy it! I thought the deviation from their previous titles was a neat direction.
The way stanning groups has devolved into essentially just a status symbol based on your hot trending stan list is depressing. I have grown to hate this side of K-pop fan behavior where all that matters are numbers and status. What happened to just liking music because you like it? What happened to liking groups bc you like them? What happened to deciding that your enjoyment of a group as a whole is more valuable than disliking a song or two? One song that doesn’t hit with you doesn’t mean a group has fallen off. It just means it wasn’t your taste, which is fine, but is a rather silly reason to accuse a group of having fallen off.
But yeah, like I said, this is just so sad. I have no desire to unstan Stayc, not to prove a point, but because as previously stated, I really enjoy their sound and their concepts as a whole and don’t have a desire to stop listening to them just because their last comeback didn’t soar as much as the others. All this does in invoke my ire of the fake former Swiths and the clout chasing K-pop fans in general. This also makes me thankful that Stayc had a comeback like Beautiful Monster so that they could weed out all the fake fans who were only supporting them for the status symbol. My advice: Stop chasing the numbers. Just enjoy music and support the groups you genuinely like just like a normal person.

StayC are a fantastic group, I've loved all of their title tracks. Some people just want another asap or run2u, but I personally like that they tried something different. Plus "stanning" one group these days is so silly, you're only limiting yourself. Why only support one gg when there's so many killing it - StayC, Ive, Le Sserafim, itzy, NewJeans, twice, red velvet, oh my girl, wjsn, Kep1er, Billlie, Weeekly, RocketPunch, blackpink, Fromis_9, Gidle, apink, Alice, brave girls, woo!ah!, loona, aespa, lightsum, Nmixx, H1-Key, mamamoo, momoland, weki meki, dreamcatcher and even exid & snsd just had a comeback... that isn't even mentioning the great female solo idols, people are spoilt for choice and still finding a reason to complain, sad really.
I agree think that people are very inconsistent. On one hand they want all the songs of a group to sound the same, then complain when they do. MOMOLAND is a perfect example. If you play Boom Boom and Bam back to back, you really can't tell where one ends and the other begins. Which sucks because they are both Really good songs that I like alot. But the criticism they received over them was terrifying.
Beautiful Monster is so good. STAYC has always been about being teen fresh genre and they keep doing it perfectly

I think the fact you made this video about STAYC in particular speaks volumes about how people look at groups dependent on casual listeners. You made a lot of really good points. As a SWITH I do believe this was not their best comeback. However, I respect their management for not locking them up in the viral tiktok song box because that would limit them in the future. There are so many people releasing catchy songs nowadays. I think this was a way to reach a different audience that wanted something different because there has been demand for that, and Im sure they knew it wouldn't do well. You could see how nervous they were in the teaser. For a group like them to gain fans, they can't always stay in their comfort zone and they tried to stay in the middle. The people unstanning were going to unstan anyway. I don't like kpop nowadays bc its all about records records records and Kpop fans look at their faves achievements as their own. I want to support them but these parasocial relationships make people root for them vicariously. Im guessing its because kpop appeals to a young demographic with nothing going on in their own lives and they need an escape. Sometimes I have to remind myself not to allow others to gaslight me and tell them why they should like it

I feel like since their company is founded by producers and not pure businessman, they themselves also have the ambition to try new things creatively. Black Eyed Pilseung has literally made bop after bop for almost ten years even prior to StayC, they literally have made a hit song for every kpop era, and i think part of their success is because they're willing to break outside of their comfort zone and try new sounds, as compared to say...*ahem* Teddy *ahem* (who tbf is a hugely successful producer, however I just can't really tell the different between his GD/2ne1 era and his current work.)

I know this video is about STAYC but you're making a lot of valid points about Kpop itself. I've grown very tired of kpop and it's not because theres no good music- there is. But it feels like a chore everytime i wanna casually listen or watch MVs and then i'll go into the comment section trying to dissect the MV and it's just full of "STREAM!!!!!!" I don't think Kpop has the same interest points that it had when i started stanning groups back in 2011 (i mean duh its been 11 years) but it's so sad how much of a money over music thing it's become

I cannot agree more. I remember when the comments were actual stuff. I remember Exo and BTS's MV comments completely filled with theories on the lore and stuff compared to now where there is a single comment everyone is copying.
The stream thing gets on my nerves too. One thing I want to point out is that compared to 11 yrs ago, it's harder to tell if the popularity growth is organic. If all we have are a bunch of ppl streaming over and over, do we know if these groups are actually popular? I think that is what sets STAYC apart. Their growth seems more organic because of the steady rise in views and sales. It's impressive coming from a small agency. That doesn't mean you don't have people who push streaming, but it seems to be less so. I dunno if I'm making sense, lol.

I've been a fan of Stayc since their debut. To me, beautiful monster is another level. Even most kpop idols loved song. I can't understand people. They are just like basic and popular. Stayc came from an unknown company. It's an achievement that they even made it this far.

Fellow SWITH, no need to be worried. Rado implicitly has warn us in that "STAYC NEXT ALBUM IS.." video. He literally said that he just wants to make a good music this time, regardless the mass appeal. For me it means they already predicted it and know how to handle it in next comeback. and for the one who stay for the music, not only for the viral tiktok music, must be agree that BM is one of their best releases yet (personally it's the most emotional song even if compared to the all the b-side) .
don't forget STAYC has the legendary BEP behind them. making viral hit song is easy for them like they already done with various artist. but they choose not to do it to show the music fans how far they can stretch their musical limit while still sounds good. Imagine if they keep making song like ASAP or Stereotype. Pretty sure there will more "unloyal fans" that can hurt them badly in the future once they decide to change.
I think BM is not only their experimental era as an artist, but also a test to know how hard the competition STAYC has to face in the future. Once they map the challenge, they can easily plan what kind of music they need to release in next several comeback. Remember they are not from big company that can guarantee attention and viral hit regardless the musical quality. the only thing they can do to maintain their career is by getting real fans as much as possible with their biggest strength which is MUSIC. so yes they need to take the long route so they can survive in the long run.

i agree with you. rado purposely made a video saying how this comeback isn't about commercial success so he knew there was a chance the song wouldn't be a hit. while it's no guarantee, he has created several hit songs so i believe he knows what to do next time. what he also needs to improve on is concept teasers because WNL was extremely underwhelming and boring. having good and unique teasers will get people interested in the comeback

i remember watching a video about bandwagon stanning by felt, and cant help but feel like this is what is happening to stayc. i think a big factor that plays into it is the fact that most girl groups (esp the more recent ones) have more casual listeners & bandwagon stans than devoted fans. when those people find something new that they like, theyll flock to it and suddenly a group like stayc, who arent even 3yo yet, seem like old news. anyway, i cant wait for stayc's next comeback where theyll undoubtedly blow the public away again!!

badwagon stans are the real problem imo. for casual listeners, music is the most important thing so they will actually care for the music they're consuming and not mind whether the group is popular or not. personally, as a casual listener of many groups, including stayc, i listen to them because i like one song or album, then i get curious to see what else they have to offer so I check their discography and probably their comebacks. I'm willing to buy a copy of an album if I enjoy it, even if I'm not going to collect their photocards or try to win a fancall, I'll also end up streaming effortlessly because their songs are on my playlists. And it's a similar experience for the fans i know that listen casually to some groups. Bandwagon stans rarely do any of these things, or at least they don't do it out of real interest bc they don't care about the music nor the group, they're just chasing the clout
That’s pretty true, that’s the case with some other groups too like Red Velvet. Some redveluvs wonder why they aren’t more “well known” but most of their Stan’s are casual. Not as devoted. Just tuning out per each comeback

Unless you're a freak like Orbits or Insomnias (I'm both for good measure) there's always that casual group you just gotta deal with jumping off and coming back. I do think it helps that STAYC has a high percentage (mostly?) women fans like Loona and Dreamcatcher have. That seems to be pretty vital to building a solid dedicated fandom whether for girls or boys.

That’s crazy cuz I have followed stayc since their debut but only decided to finally Stan them BECAUSE of their recent comeback title song Beautiful Monster. I like that the song is risky and different but has their signature sound. Also I can listen to it many times without getting tired, not like So Bad and ASAP.
Oh I’m not like other stans. I actually get into the music before the popularity. Stayc never fell off. Fell off is overused, please stop. They only had a very ok comeback. They will comeback better than ever don’t give up on Stayc.

Surprisingly, Beautiful Monster was my second favorite title track from Stayc besides So Bad. I can understand that some casual listener might not like it because its far different from the direction that they went with Run2U but still, their music direction didn’t fell of. If anything, I feel that their company was just trying to add more color on StayC’s discography.
But an additional thought: I think that there is this pattern where people are joining a bandwagon where they’ll “stan” a girl group because that said gg gained a greater popularity. But the moment that they have seen a trend of people not liking their recent comeback, then that’s enough of a reason for them to say that the said gg “fell off.”
Anyways, i still love StayC and can’t wait for their next comeback.

I start stanning Stayc when they debuted with so bad and since then for me they never released a bad song Beutiful monster was beautiful yes it was kinda different from their other song but i liked it I even bought their album recently and I’ll continue to support them

I personally don't stan StayC just because I don't know them that well. I love their music, beautiful Monster I thought was great but I want to find an opportunity to get to know them soon :)
Definitely worth getting to know them from their behind the scene contents (STAY SEE series), which all have English subtitles. It’s the chemistry between the team members and how every member gets to shine in their own way that I knew this group is special.

Truth is that majority of kpop stans are high schooler's or younger, so they tend to love certain groups to the point where they can't see themselves staning anyone else (and I know its not all of u)
StayC's discographies are one of the top 3 in 4th gen as of my styles, also including BM. I first noticed them in BM era and started listening to their songs, and now I'm a more-than-casual listener. But imo, BM was less popular bc their cb schedules overlapped with big groups like Aespa, Itzy, etc. I'm not blaming them for BM era but I wished StayC could have gotten more from that cb. Everyone should try out their songs I mean it's super good!!!!! 11/10 recommended discography

For some reason, BM era reminds me of GFRIEND’s Fingertip era. The drastic change of music direction really affected the group’s popularity. I hope STAYC can comeback stronger from this like how GFRIEND did, achieving success with Love Whisper, and TFTMN when they revisited their niche sound.

I think a perfect example of what you are talking about here is Blackpink's recent comeback, and specifically the song Pink Venom. Whether you like the song or not, it is objectively uncreative and rehashes sounds/structures/themes that BP has done 10 times already. You could argue this for their album as a whole as well. Yet everyone dropped everything for BP's comeback and seem to get some weird high off of "their girls" being number 1. It doesn't even seem to matter to them what the music sounds like.

The group he considered to have fallen off has been doing KCON World Tour non stop since the start of this year and has been loved by fans overseas. They haven't rested since their latest comeback.

For a smaller group like stayc they probably get paid around US $7500/performance. After expenses its probably net $5000. And then the agency took at least 50%, that leaves them with $2500 to be split 6 members each getting about $400 per person..

The fear of being left out is true. I recently just come back to kpop after like 10 years (toxic memory with other kpop friends in the past) all because of Stayc, their pure honesty about being a rookie and try to improve overtime melted me. I engaged in with my new kpop friends in college, and.. as he said, recent debut of new jeans turn them around, literally, they begin to call Stayc as 'nugu' in my presence, which hurt me so much (don't worry, i told them 'toxic' in their faces, indirectly, which made them stop calling my Stayc like that for a long while). They made me remember why i left kpop before when i was fan of 2ne1 in the 10s, snsd and exo were really popular then, so they call me liking 2ne1 as weird. There're too many toxic kpop fans that i encountered. So i would stop making kpop friends from now on. As an introvert, i find it more pleasant to just keep things to myself than telling other for they to disrepespect it someday.
Still after spending over 2 years with them i don't know how I'm gonna pass this phase, don't want to be enemies for the rest of college tho.

I adore STAYC. I do not think that they have fallen off. Beautiful monster is definitely not their strongest release and it is in the era of massive success by other girl groups, especially 4th gen. I predict that their next comeback is going to put them back in center stage where they belong.

I may be biased for my ult group lol, but it’s so nice to see a group like Dreamcatcher stick to their concept and sound so confidently. Their company was taking a huge risk by completely redebuting them, but it paid off so well, and it makes me wish more companies did the something similar. They may not be the most popular, but the group loves their concept and what they do, the fanbase is super nice and in it for the music, and they aren’t afraid to try different things while still sticking to their original sound and style. Everything I think a kpop group, fan base, and company should be.
Oh but DC never let us down. Plus, as a fandom we show up with our wallets and that's keeping them comfortably afloat even if they are not super popular. DC's company was and still is extremely competent and smart and their production is solid. Anyway, Imsonias are super chill, usually a bit older than the average kpop stans. All in all we are the perfect example of niche success.

Beautiful Monster is literally my favorite tt of Stayc 🤡 It was Run2U for the longest time but I literally fell in love after they released Beautiful Monster! In general the other songs in the single album were so good. People need to appreciate sidetracks more. "I like it" became my favorite song of them.

As someone who doesn't keep up with StayC the title confused, but then I realised that true, unlike with their other songs I barely saw any talk of their recent comeback on social media. At first I didn't agree with the statement that people don't listen to a song because they like it but simply because it's popular, because it just seems so absurd to me - but honestly, after watching further you've convinced me. This trend cycle seems to be running particularly fast for new girlgroups right now, I really hope things will calm down and that all of them can settle with a good fanbase that actually likes their music.
I think this is happening because people are not ready to hear kpop artists exploring different genres or sounds in their songs, different from the generally pop songs that I'm personally tired of hearing and that's why I really like Beautiful Monster.

As a casual listener to STAYC it was so weird to see my timeline from lots of people stanning them to being almost forgotten.
People treat kpop groups like fast food, they don't take them seriously and discard them at the most minor inconvenience and as you said some mostly token stan just to be the "most important" because they treat the success of the groups as their own. I've been into kpop since 2009 and it always been like this but these last 2-3 years have been worse bcs there's many amazing girl groups so people are changing groups (and hating the old ones) way faster than before
stayc is one of the girl groups that i have their whole discography on repeat. the only other group i listen to the whole discography is billlie and aespa.

I don't think Swiths are unstanning Stayc but more like the casual listeners who aren't really stans are the ones who do. Stayc improved their album sales in their last comeback and that's a testament to fandom being strong.
I also think that people forgot or don't know that the korean digital charts rely heavily on casual listeners. It is unfortunate that Beautiful Monster isn't something that people would like to listen to but Stayc can always release a more public-friendly song in their next comeback and chart high once again. For example, Itzy was said to have been "fallen off" since they don't chart high anymore but their album sales are consistently selling well and they recently just got a hit with Sneakers so it could be the same with Stayc.
It was the biggest album sales on that comeback.

Honestly among all the Girl groups, STAYC never disappoint us from Debut to every comebacks... They're literally underrated since new girl groups are coming months after months. They literally got a good company and also their vocals and choreographies never fails and are top notch. I don't even know why are people hating Beautiful Monster when it was a great comeback song and they're trying something different. In a girl group, you don't just stick with one genre because it'll get boring and looked repetitive, STAYC is giving us a variety of genres for us to love their music more.
I been an Orbit (Loona Stan) since predebut, personally I haven’t really liked any of their tittle tracks since butterfly, and I also lost any hope on them getting domestic success and recognition but I will never stop liking them or supporting them. I really love Stacy’s music and also I will support them, it’s really dumb that supposed stans dropped them after one comeback, also beautiful monster is not even bad, everyone just started saying that after the supposed stans them called bad and boring on twitter

I’m sorry but beautiful monster is gorgeous. I have no idea why people hate it. It doesn’t hit the first listen but after not picking for month’s bro it’s amazing. I love the way the audio-tune makes them sound mixed with their natural beautiful voices. Sumin’s especially great on that track.

I love STAYC regardless if they trend or not, Beautiful Monster is my top 3 from them. I thought it was so fresh when I first listened to it and I still do. Not only do I like STAYC's music but I like their personalities as well and what their producers are trying to do which is making music that they enjoy making which is so rare in Kpop.I don't Stan Kpop idols anymore and STAYC is the only group that I do stan, the only group that I would actually buy merchandise from. So even if eventually they have a release that I don't like I wouldn't unstan because most likely they'll have a B-side that I like. It's ridiculous but it shows the company/group who will stick around in their fandom.

Just admit it wasn't your taste the phrase has been overused it has no vaule anymore. Been a StayC fan since day one. There's no definitive way to tell which group flops remember G Idle? We thought without Soojin that the group was going to fall off and look what they've done, they broke records and shattered my expectations. I learned to think more critically and not judge a group on one single. Not everybody is going to like the same thing. I liked Pink Venom, but everybody else hated it and Shut Down is good but I think Pink Venom is better we all have music that clicks to us.
