- DJ/crate digger/champion nerd Mr Thing geeks out about the day he came across the sample Dilla used for Phat Kat's 'Cold Steel' beat.
This is an outtake from the mini-doc 'Nothing Leaves The House' produced for First Word Records 2014 Record Store Day release where Mr Thing invited Eric Lau, Tall Black Guy & Kidkanevil to dig his epic personal collection for samples, resulting in an exclusive double 7inch. See the original doc here...

I will continue to be blown away by J Dilla's Genius for the rest of my life.
Blew my mind. Literally used a vocal sample, a couple notes of chords, and that hit at the beginning of the B-side track. He basically used three elements and combined them to make one of his hardest, and IMHO, best beats. I’ll never get tired of discovering more and more from J Dilla - RIP
Yep to all you said, and I am adding As Serious As Your Life Is AND Dedication To Tha Suckas as the trilogy of Knocking Jay Dee Beats...
Dude will always be the best ever. Sorry Preem...you 2nd...
Gainsborough Galley is the sampled band if anyone is curious. Hell of a find by dilla, not many pressed records for the album and completely obscure
TMG!
Brilliant stuff. I DJed with Phat Kat a few years back and he said they called Dilla “the alien” because he’d start making a beat, they’d leave the lab, ten minutes later he’d have a beat finished. (That’s how long it took Dilla to make the “Introducing Phat Kat” beat.) They figured he’d transform into some kind of alien while they were out of the room, make the beat, then turn back into human form again and get them back in 😂
Don't recall listening to a single thing from J. Dilla, but shoutout to the Tiny Meat Gang and my fellow Cutlets for showing me this.
check out "in space" or "track 2 (15 minute)". You have to listen to some Dilla
Jake and Bake Beats Can do
Your comment is embarrassing because not to know a hip-hop God such as dilla is not to know hip-hop.
Dilla will forever be the best to ever do it
this is so unbelievable that it actually makes me angry. like... how? what gives j dilla the fucking _right_ to be so goddamn GOOD?
rip jay dee. he's the best to ever do it.
HOWWWWWWW BRO. best fucking producer of all time
This may be the sickest beat I've ever heard.
Man🤦🏾♂️🎶🎶🎶🎶Dilla was not human💯👑💯
Saw Phat KAT live in Detroit at Rock the Bells. Still listen to this song at the gym.
I found this album for five dollars and looked online for it and it was like 80 bucks

Incredible. Pure musical genius.
Yo I got goosebumps and ain't even there with them lmao! 👽🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
I love hip hop for stuff like this. You can take something so beautiful and turn it into the audio equivalent of a nosebleed.
AMAZING find... been tryin to find this sample for years...
FUCKING GENIUS!!!!!
amazing!!!
mind absolutely blown, holy shit
Been looking everywhere for that sample and it’s all in one record. Damn Dilla dawg you’re one heck of a flipper..!
Cold steel was always my go to when someone came with the 'but did he ever make grimey/street shit tho'. This is so great. Plus; thanks for NOT showing/sharing the name of the band or record. Nobody seems to know the code anymore. Or how much trouble sample snitching can create for producers or their family in Dilla's case.
man fr, this is definitely grimey street shit. but anyone who doubts he did street shit just needs to listen to anything he did with frank n dank
True. That's a good point.
I remember Phat Kat did a video showing the record, name and all...but I can't find it. It must have been taken down.
Word up Presto! 💪🏽
Welcome 2 Detroit as well
Amazing
Real Groovy Records in Auckland Central ... my old hang out back in the day!!! Dope treasures in there!
I posted my top 5 Dilla beats in a group in FB and a dude listed Cold Steel in his and shared this video with me...never knew where he got the sample from...this is definitely a treat 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Much love from Detroit. 😎

Eric was right when he said the best to ever do it
I got it! And it was in mint condition for 4.50!
Oh my!!!
The dude will never show anyone that album cover
Its like....J Dilla blacksmithing the beat from Arsenal, industrial engineering production with eye hand coordination. The caliber side effect is J Dilla's penetration standard turning all into mushroom. I love it.
SHHHHAJAJAJJA!!
What kinda mixer is dat!
hahahaha good job man
Now that is real rap. Pulling out a old vinyl album to make a beat . Damn dilla was the man
But WHATS THE SAMPLE
🍌🍌🍌🍌
Whats the name of the song from the sample or who it is
the album is "Life is a Song" by The Gainsborough Gallery
まじか笑
Why’s bro gatekeeping the album
how is he isolating the vocals like that? doesn't seem as simple as a low/high pass filter to me
jamps have you figured that out ?
Probably panning it left/right. Haven't heard the record but a lot of late 60s stuff (when stereo was "new") can have the vocals panned hard to one side. Or the drums, sometimes the drums are open in one channel.
what are you talking about? in the original, the vocal is playing by itself
@@macboogieland2897 that's cuz mr thing panned it left, you see his hand turn a knob on the mixer exactly when everything else cuts out
@@awest11000 oh shit! didn't realize he panned the sample as the vocal came in.. good lookin out
ㅋㅋㅋㅋ진짜시발ㅋㅋㅋ
