    Mr.Sergey, this time famous well-known Beethoven's Sonata "The Tempest" (Der Sturm), yesterday's I've heard on your channel all 24 Chopin's Preludes Op.28, as always MAGNIFICENT MAESTRO!!!!! I'm looking forward to your concert in my country Poland, mainly in Szczecin (it's a big city), in a great own concert hall. Lately every day I listen to
    your wonderful performances, mainly Chopin's and Beethoven's music, although only sometimes I write my comments, my wishes for a happy weekend and as always heartfelt
    warm greetings from Poland.

      @@sergeypiano I think you play this as Beethoven himself would have played this work - with heavy keys and unbridled raw emotion - your sound is big - which is what I think Beethoven demands in his work - I personally like it but others may find it too much - too many play young pianists in particular play it way too fast and literally run through the garden to try to get through it as quickly as they can or so it seems - others play it sweetly ( Kempff ) and it does sound nice then as well - but I prefer your approach and I would play it like this too - attacking and aggressive because I think Beethoven intended it that way - re: its a Tempest after all - it is not meant to be soft and cuddly - one of the best interpretations I have heard - the other interpretation that is appealing is Valentina L. - to play such a masculine work like Beethoven for a women is difficult and I think she does well - the only other comment is that you seem to genuinely enjoy playing the work yourself which comes across to the listener - playing it for yourself first and foremost ..

    I am learning this sonata myself and had trouble in the beginning because I was not used to the particular phrasing used especially in the first movement. Are there any pointers on what to focus on? Also note that I do repeat the exposition myself on this first movement but I would not on the Waldstein

      Also my repertoire now consists of this sonata, the Mozart sonata K310, and the Schubert Impromptu #1 op. 90. Have you played the K310 by Mozart before

      It's difficult to give a ready-made piece of advice suitable to anyone. However, pay attention to the three tempi in the first movement (the two slow tempi should differ from each other) and to the original pedal indications in its reprise. As for the finale, on average, wherever you see extra stem on the 2nd note of a bar in the left hand, try to hold it with finger and refrain from catching the 1st more on the pedal, and, conversely, to take the pedal at the bar start when there's no such stem on the 2nd note. And staccato dots on the end of a slur means just reduced weight for the note, i.e. no accent.

      @Garensonic Před 4 lety

      @@sergeypiano I was actually able to get through the 1st movement at a slightly faster tempo than this (my performance of the first movement took around 7 and a half minutes with the repeat of the exposition) and also got halfway through the second movement. The rhythm in the second movement is tricky

    The "Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow Conservatory" needs a little freshening up! An artist of this caliber should not have to perform on a dirty, seedy old stage that has not had a paint job in 50 years!

    At 10:49 the video jumps!! This makes me wonder whether the performance is in fact "live", as claimed (my assessment: there is no real evidence of an audience - just prerecorded applause at the end, but otherwise not a single cough or sneeze throughout the whole course of the performance) - or as more likely, this video has been carefully (but imperfectly) edited, based on the best "takes" of several rehearsals. This is a difficult piece, and I can understand that several takes might be necessary to achieve a satisfactory result. But, please, be honest about this! At least with Glenn Gould's recordings from studio performances, the producers were honest enough to admit that the result was the optimal outcome of many repeated recordings.

    • @sergeypiano
      @sergeypiano  Před 6 lety +1

      I'm afraid that your assumptions are mistaken. Firstly, what appears to you as a complete abscence of any sign of public presence isn't such, there still are many public noises, for instance at 12:56, 14:14-14:20, 15:45, 16:46 and many more. Indeed, many noises have been cleaned away, such as a cell phone ringing, chairs cracking etc., but this is not a ground to assume a non-live recording, all the less a separately made recording that corresponds note-by-note to live finger movements on the video.
      Secondly, the jump of the video is due to the video camera finishing writing one file and starting writing another one at this point. Consumer-grade video cameras are known to have such issues at times: at the file switch, several frames may be lost. If you happen to be badly interested, I can provide you with fragments of the original video files.

      @@sergeypiano I didn't mean any disrespect, and what I said was only regarding the 3rd movement. I measured your tempo for the first 14 bars and it comes to exactly 12 seconds, a tempo of 105. From what I've read, allegretto went through a transformation in the early 19th century and somewhat sped up to 102-110, which your performance falls right in the middle. It is possible that when Beethoven wrote the movement, he intended for it to be even slower than 100, perhaps 80-85, which is mind-bogglingly slow for me. But your speed is correct.
      Personally, having listened to this sonata by various artists, I prefer a faster pace of perhaps allegro moderato, but that's just my personal taste.

    • @sergeypiano
      @sergeypiano  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you. Indeed, one feels the temptation to make the finale faster flowing. But had Beethoven wanted this effect, he might just as well have written Allegro or Presto: he was never afraid of extreme tempi. In the cases where he used Allegretto in 3-beat measures, he indicated fairly moderate metronome markings, e.g. 56 measures per minute in the 6th and 9th sonatas and 69 in the Moonlight sonata (my tempo is approx. 70-73). By the way, Czerny who had studied the sonata with Beethoven suggests a metronome of 74 for this movement.
      All in all, I think this tempo better suits this music than an Allegro and allows one to highlight better its subtleties.
