  • Mel Gibson has many great movies under his belt, but when it comes to the best movie he has ever appeared in, i think it was this one, just edging the Braveheart (1995) and The Patriot (2000).
Actually, i take that back. This movie would be second only to The Patriot (that one is straight up a masterpiece), followed by Braveheart, so it's up there in top 3.
When it comes to Vietnam Movies, it's "up there" too. Would have to go into (my) top 5.
    1st. - Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987)
    2nd. - Oliver Stone's Platoon (1986)
    3rd. - Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979)
4th. - this one, Randall Wallace's We Were Soldiers (2002)
    5th. - Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter (1978)
Honorable mention (there are too many great movies from Vietnam War) - John Irvin's Hamburger Hill (1987)
You might have noticed that it is the only Vietnam War movie from our "modern" era in my top 5.
But, it also has one thing that only one other achieved better (Full Metal Jacket) IMHO - at times, sense of being there with the soldiers - realistic feel.
First, we watch the soldiers in their family settings, then walking out with them to board the buses taking you (ultimately) to Vietnam. We fly with them in the choppers and dismount with them into beautiful foliage-full nature. Then, we fight with them (their point of view most of the time).
The sound in this movie is absolutely insane and recorded in surround thorough - no other Vietnam movie has it - a feature very much "demonstrated" in this very scene where the camera rotates around Mel and you can hear individual shots coming from various positions all around you.
My video of course is only a stereo, so if you want to experience what I'm talking about you need to get yourself a proper quality copy and have Home Theater setup of at least 5.1 if not 7.1 - which i do, and it is a spectacular experience thorough the full movie.
I think it was one of the selling points of the movie at the time (now it would be considered a normal feature), but still utilized a lot more than in our current movies, even in scenes it wouldn't be necessary.
The only small gripes I have with the movie is that it often portrays totally unrealistic combat (although it tries to be realistic) and even more so many times totally unrealistic gore (even though it tries to be gory / shocking - so why not to do it properly like in Saving Private Ryan).
"So it is a War movie with unrealistic combat and gore, you say?" Why would this be in top 5 then? - I hear you ask.
Well not only it is in top 5, I can even recommend it.
You see, it is not always totally unrealistic combat and totally unrealistic gore. More like sprinkled here and there and when it happens it begs the question: "Why?", it was good so far, who thought this was a good idea to do in the movie that obviously is positioning itself as "realistic".
It was somewhat breaking the otherwise excellent immersion.
Well, for some part it is, as well as it is following the actual events (it is based on real events), for the most part.
So overall, yeah, pretty good and can more than recommend it!
My most memorable scene in the movie? Well, you have just watched it.

I love how Mel Gibson is just walking and standing, knowing he has main character armor.

I'm sure it was just meant to be "look at me, I'm bad-ass who fears nothing", leading by example if you will,
but at some point his own "right hand" had to pull his ass down telling him "chill! if you get killed, we will all get killed, don't do stupid sh*t!"
