Who should pay more?

- One of the biggest complaints we had as a garbage company is "You charge extra for trash outside the cart?" Then it is inferred we do it because we are trying to get rich or are greedy. I assure you... I am far from rich and if I get rich from trash, it isn't going to be from charging for trash outside the cart. So, why do it? From a service to community point-of-view... For starters, it isn't fair to neighbors that pay the same rate but get less service. Also, there are some who have expressed appreciation when we have cleaned up piles or mandated folks put extra garbage in an extra cart. It makes the entire street look nicer and overall more sanitary. From a business point-of-view... It comes down to time and weight. When you standardized the service across all the stops on the route, everyone gets the same amount of time and service. Everyone gets a cart; the truck comes to every house. When the truck has to stop operation to service additional trash or the driver has to get out and pick up trash around the cart, it adds more time, weight and safety risk. The vast majority of injuries (and there are many in sanitation) occur outside the truck. Another thing that is misunderstood, is there is a bill at the end of the day to pay for dumping the truck. Picking up extra trash translates into a larger disposal bill at the end of the day. Additionally, it doesn't take long to get behind on a route when stopping to clean up extra garbage. If 10% of a 700 stop route adds an extra minute, that translates into 70stops needing an additonal 1h10mins to service.
It's not possible to respond to all the comments, so this will be a shameless plug to follow/sub to the channel.
This is a topic we'll be touching on a lot and you may gain some insight with some content I've already posted.
A key point that's not explained in a short is that not every market or community is subject to the same variables that dictate trash policy and strategy.
Some service is provided by the city with city employees.
Some is provided by a private hauler.
Some is provided by a private hauler through a city contract.
Those three scenarios are all negotiated differently.
Thanks for watching and commenting. It has given us a lot of ideas for future content.
How about this one. You live in a city where you get 3 seperate bins. 1 garbage 1 organics 1 recycling. You are only aloud to put out 1 bin per week on a schedule. So it's every 3 weeks your bin gets emptied and you have to sit there smelling 3 week old rotting food/garbage. Now compound that with you live in a house of 5 uni students. How are your bins not supposed to be overfill at that point? Your telling us that a bin that size should last 5 seperate people cooking there own food doing there own shopping etc should last 3 weeks? You don't know what is going on in someone's house. Why complain about having to do your job? Don't like getting out to collect trash find a new job.
Are you suggesting that garbage service be charged by the pound?
They should have to pay for a 2nd trash can
An what if it isn't that full like that every day or they go on vacation and they have no trash you going to credit them for that it's people like you that destroy this country
Make them get a second can. I know where i used to live when they started using these trucks you got 1 can and had to go to city hall to gwt atickers for anything outside the can or you got fined.😢
I remember when guys rode on the back of the truck and actually worked
Yea you could throw away whatever
Now they cry if they have to get out lmao we’ve gotten so soft
As they still should there is the problem people do t want to work
Yup, and you paid his salary. You're too shortsighted to realize that this is cheaper for YOU. DeRrRrrP
I was talking about that the other day. But they had to pick the can up and dump it there selves. Punks todays time. Lmao
If I skip a week because my can isn’t even half full is the trash service going to charge me less?
Excatly, you should be able to fill as much as you like. Now, the stuff on the ground, i would leave for the customer to deal with. I know for me, it might take 2 weeks to fill my can, and I do not get a break when I only have 1 bag in there.
Actually you should be able to pay per can. I can only have one. At one time two would have been nice. Or a smaller sized can for a smaller sized price.
Exactly
And not every household has the same amount. Meaning a household of 2 vs a household of six.
@DMN-qf3bo Excatly what we are saying. You dont pay less for less trash, So dont charge more for people that have to fill theirs to the top.
Years ago, our trash company raised the price and said it was a fuel surcharge as fuel was high. After a while, the fuel price went down, but the surcharge never left.
That’s the same reason employers are slow to raise wages even in good markets or inflation. Or why politicians will sometimes fight back against spending that makes short term sense. Once things go up and are in the budget - it’s very hard to get them down or remove them.
It’s an interesting issue because if employees were more willing to accept decreases, then they would make more money overall because it would decrease this lag time to raises. (In no way blaming employees - it’s human nature + them adjusting their lives when they get a raise).
@@mcs131313the wages thing isn't an issue. The prices never come back down they just increase slower so giving people a raise to match inflation should be a no brainer. But that's not what happens because companies are greedy.
@@rory6984 it depends if you're talking about a free market economy or "to each according to his needs" style economy
In a free market, wages represent the market price for a particular skillset, which incorporates the supply (are people willing to work for you for that price) and the demand (are you willing and able to pay that price)
Inflation impacts companies differently. but for most industries it's negative. That means that even though the amount of money they are making might increase (but this doesn't even happen for many industries) - the inflation adjusted value usually decreases in the short-> medium term.
To be fair the gas prices haven’t went down either so
@@TheMr69roadrunner yeah that’s kinda my point. Say your an airline the last couple years. Your cost of fuel went up a lot. People traveled less because the economy was getting worse. And the unrest rates or lease rates you pay for planes went up. I don’t see why that would make them want to pay more for labor.
That’s demand. The supply side is - if emps as a whole won’t work for that rate - they have to pay more. But the the job market wasn’t as tight last year either.
So you have both supply and demand saying real wages should go down.
It sounds harsh - another angle: there’s out there that doesn’t have that job right now and wants it. If quit because you don’t like the pay, someone else who is grateful for that level of pay will show up. And that’s a better outcome. Right now they want a job, the airline wants to pay you less, and you want more. All 3 unhappy.
That’s the over simplified answer that.. reality js usually to give a raise even when it doesn’t make short term economic sense - because you want long term non-disgruntled employees.
But anyway - super long winded way of saying wages shouldn’t have. Increased by as much as inflation. There were more willing workers and for many industries reduced profit.

They do the same in Australia. And it should be exactly like that. If you have extra trash that can't fit in the bin, take it to the dump.
Yea let’s do the job they could’ve done and are getting paid to do 😂🤡🤡🤡
@@jacobthorpe4316 Most counties don't have public dumps in the USA, mostly only the largest counties by population. The trash companies send the trash to private company dumps. You can go there, but you have to basically pay a base pay of 70-200 dollars to dump your trash, as they are used to getting their money from garbage companies who can pay for it.
A standard trash can is not enough space for families around the holidays, nor if they are raking leaves. There's no sense to pay double the price for maybe five excess weeks of trash in a year.
Since garbage companies have gotten these claw trucks, which I first saw in the last 10-15 years, service has deteriorated immensely and the prices have gone up significantly.
Ahh yes, leave the trash that you're paid to pick up just because you're too lazy to pick it up.
Great job!
Thats Why Berlin is a shit hole. Meanwhile Amsterdam is the definition of a clean Berlin.
Yes they should pay the same. Ive got CDL class A. starting pay for your job here is $26. And they don't have a gripper that does half the job. Lol
I work for a city sanitation department and we load all the cans into the back by hand/physical lifting. Maybe 3 or 4 garbage cans in the whole town are operated by the can lifter on the back of the truck. Manual laborer concept. We also pick up extra garbage that are not in the cans, but we’re technically not required to do it. In your situation the responsibility lies on the customer. You’re choosing to pick up the extra garbage that are on the ground to avoid conflict, just like we do. I personally think it’s better that way, but some (certain) people really take advantage of it and are careless about it. I want the town to look nice and the customer to be happy, but they also need to respect us and do it properly.
You’re so right. The first person isn’t utilizing their trash per payment as well.
First person should be loading up 10x more.
They should ask their neighbor if they can toss excess in their can. But this probably isn't a regular thing anyway. Just an extra week, maybe they had a party or some shit.

That is a thing 🤦🏻♂️ talk about using our brains and you can’t even use yours.
@@dougb27thats not a thing lmao, a trash service like any other type of service is paid monthly whether you use it or not. You can cancel the service, and possibly get a refund if pick up day hadnt happened yet. But no, you cannot in any way get a refund because you went on vacation, thats not how a subscription service works.
There are companies who charge per lift so technically you can opt not to pay when your out of town of your in one of those areas. That said your analogy is wrong since the collection guy will still come to your house regardless of if you leave the trash out or not so he's still living up to his end of the deal even if you didn't need it so you should still have to pay

An advice, get along with your neighbors, I was living with 3 other roommates, so 4 total, so we had a lot of trash, but some of the neighbors were very nice and told us if we ever had excess of trash, we could use theirs only if they had room when the garbage truck would collect it. We used the neighbors bin almost every week for 4 years.

In my home town the city will refuse to take your garbage if the lid doesn't close all the way. The reason is that we have tons of clever crows that will spread a trash can's contents over the whole street if they can get the lid open.
In the Netherlands, the magnet on the container tells the weight. So people pay a yearly amount, plus each time they get emptied. City governments count how many containers fit per load per truck with the lid closed.

My trash service charges extra for overfilled cans and any trash outside of the can. Found this out when someone dropped their trash next to our can and we got charged for it. Also found out you can set it up so they will not pick up anything other than your cans.
My community just sets the rule that the lid must be closed with nothing on top or sticking out. If any of that is not followed, they pass you by, and you can call when you have corrected it.

@@rudykreutz3881 Not bingo. Your trash collection agreement USUALLY stipulates how many bags/cans CAN be picked up per week. @thenerdnetwork you totally missed what I said. Wake up, get some coffee and try again.
Yes, because next week the other neighbor will have an overflowing trashcan and that neighbor won't. Sometimes you just have more trash than usual. Happens to all of us.

Exactly - It’s common sense that it’s going to fluctuate. The old days guys would walk and jump off the back to pick up and throw the trash away. Usually two guys, one for each side. Those were the better days. In my neighborhood they leave anything that doesn’t fit in the can. It’s ridiculous.
The data doesn’t really bear out this assumption. Trash output in general remains fairly consistent across households. Waste haulers will now issue a warning to either upsize the trash container or cancel pickups. Municipalities will also issue warnings and fines for trash overflow.

I live in broward county, and i asked for 2 garbage cans in order to have the proper storage for my family's(6people) trash. I understand in the stress of getting out of the vehicle and having to put the trash into the can for the 2nd pick up. However, the service in it of itself is physically LESS stressful as a whole vs the traditional way of 2 men grabbing trash and chucking it into the back of the truck. I understand that this also then reduces the amlunt of needed staff/employess in order to do the job. However, it is a more efficient process in picking up trash as a whole.
