  • On a mount in Essex sits what is the most offensive inscription on a tombstone in Britain, if not the world.
Pitsea is also famous for the Peasants Revolt in 1381 and it's leader Wat Tyler. So we get on the trail of the Ye Olde Englisc rebels.

There were 3 events in the run up to the peasants revolt which get forgotten. The most famous being the black death. But the peasants reaction after the black death is what led to the peasants revolt with its demand for more freedom and a decent wage. The 2 events were massive flooding and leading destruction of grain, and crops, meaning that food prices rocketed and the other was a disease of sheep that killed a vast majority of flocks which meant that sheep prices skyrocketed. When the black death hit it the survivors understood their value should also increase. It was the attempt to reinstate pre-black death wage laws while increases taxes that led to the revolt.

Actually she's not the only aleged witch buried in consecrated ground - there's another on, up in the Staffordshire Moorlands, but sadly I forget where it is -and that's reputedly haunted! And, regarding offensive inscriptions, a girl who was murdered near Sutton Coldfield has a similarly unpleasant epitaph, implying she brought it on herself by sleeping easy....... the trial of the man accused of killing her was unusual, as it was the last time a relative challenged the accused to mortal combat, in the 1840s!

There's one on Mersea island too, has grates over the top of the grave to stop her escaping, I've a photo somewhere of it. Come across it some years back.

The peasants revolt actually started in Liston, a tiny hamlet just outside Long Melford, on the Essex/Suffolk border.

Well they dunked her in a pond and she drowned, which proved she wasn't a witch so they let her go.

What's wrong with the inscription then? Seems alright to me.
