A little side graft, i use this graft a lot. If you use a slightly longer scion and face the bud towards the stock it will grow vertically and above the stock giving a better tree.
Like the bird song.

I have a question. What happens if new branches develop from the original rootstock once the drafting has been completed? Do I need to prune those or let them grow? I bought a Satsuma Mandarin tree that is grafted but for some reason, the grafted branch is not growing anymore. New branches from the rootstock have sprung up and are now getting taller. I am totally new to this. Some help would be greatly appreciated!

if you use grafting tape, i think that it's OK. i'm not use grafting tape, I use thicker plastic than grafting tape, so i don't wrapped the active eye bud.
