Legend has it that they're still reloading till this day.
This system was replaced in front line service by the US nearly 30 years ago. It was designed in the 60s. It was mostly mounted on vehicles. It was supposed to defend against low level air threats. In reality it ended up being used mainly as a ground support weapon on vehicles because of its high rate of fire and ability to tear apart infantry and lightly armored vehicles.
M163 was the vehicle
kinda harsh if you tell about infantry part
Feel bad for these kids if they ever find themselves in a war facing against Chinese jets.
sadly.. the amount of time to prep them going to be a disastrous.. its a perfect meal for an attack drones these days...
I expect this has a far more modern FCS over the original VADS. We'll also likely see a resurgence of systems like this to cheaply deal with the large-scale proliferation of drones.
Manned static defenses? Holy shit. Now that's a scary position in times of war.
Even towed artillery is pretty scary to man in a peer-to-peer war. Battlefield radars can locate the firing point of artillery shells in midflight and start counter-firing before the shells even land.
Easy targets are the ones manned by people. They don't have the sensor suit to tell them they are about to die.
To be in the war is a scary position in times of war
In all likelihood this is a reservist/auxiliary type demonstration. I doubt Korea is reliant upon these for front line first intercept roles.
@@Glitch0010 It'd be pretty foolish for Korea to rely upon these guys, seeing as they are Japanese.
I gave this video a thumbs up because getting criticized in at least four different languages has got to be worth something.

I drank two cups of coffee watching these kids load that 20 mike at Chitose Base Air, they need to rethink that weapon design or loading procedure.
VADS is US made weapon system , and they started replacing it in 1994. Its seriously outdated even with the a2 version , but then again depends who Japan is defending against...

The VADS was a system developed by the US during the Vietnam conflict. They were mounted on an armored platform as a mobile unit. The US Navy took this and mounted it shipboard for testing. When I served in the USS Coontz in 1976 we had one mounted mid ship port side and I remember a number of live fire exercises with it. This system is now the beloved Phalanx CIWS.
M163 was the vehicle in Vietnam
@@commandergeokam2868 And there was the US Army towed variety (M167) that is very similar to this version

Bruh, ppl saying they are not fast enough etc. The aircraft would be detected long before. If the aircraft aren't detected then any weapon wouldn't work.
Why not just have it loaded and ready though?
Exactly
Anti Aircraft Guns like these are mostly used for low flying aircraft, these get detected a lot later thsn Normal flying aircraft but i get where youre coming from.
This is just training, if it was a real world operation they would have already been loaded.
these seems to be deployable aswell, for something you can just pop out anywhere to destroy aircraft it's good

It's taking waaaaaaay too loooooooong time to load that gatling gun, the war would be over by the time, they're finished.....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahahaha 🤣
apparently they are only training for an emergency reload Incase the power is out. They have electric winders that bring the ammunition in. During normal conditions for base defense (not during an exhibition) the ammunition is already loaded on standby.
I was a 16R back in the early 90s. Trained on the towed Vulcan and the tracked Vulcan. They aren't very accurate, but man I had fun shooting it
If you installed the ground clamp it gave a tighter shit group. That was my favorite way of firing. Aerial clamp sucked!
It's so nice of them to show respect to those that are hearing impaired by holding up a sign that says "Shooting sound".
😂
Wait, it was a sarcasm, right?
If you want to see the weapons fire skip to 5.30
Yes it takes over 5 minutes for them to ready the weapons, by that time everyone would be pink mist
Also, the guns were already deployed in the beginning, just think how long it would take to deploy, ready, fire and then scoot the gun out of the combat zone.
The amount of Americans in the comments who see Asian soldiers and automatically assume “China” is concerning
Well they do look the same I think
@@gogertonherface5849 They sound pretty different. And a quick glance at the title will literally tell you everything you need to know about the video.
it's the M167 Vulcan Air Defense System! used to protect the rear logistics system, the M167 Vulcan with the same terrible rate of fire as the Phalanx CIWS , If it was pre-loaded during wartime, I don't think many planes would dare to come close
Looks like a fully manual process. If anyone thinks this machine is automated, caveman once thought its fire was the end game, the absolute goal of science.

For a nation that has a reputation for making awesome electronic products, surely they could’ve fitted a motor to at least assist the loading process
im not impressed tbh, this should have plug n 'play' ammo boxes and be remotely controlled in this day and age
That adds complexity and cost, and if the motor breaks in the middle of battle, you won't have time to repair it, and you don't want to be left unable to reload.
Be nice!
They brought these guns outta a Museum!
No this is pure battle thing, no sensitive electronics that needs maintance and qualified personnel, just people who now how to set this up, load ammo and pull trigger =D
@@raptor2265 you don’t need to repair it because you can use the handle like shown in the video in case it fails, but when it’s working, soldiers can save some strength and fight on for much longer.
just enough time for a cup of tea between reloads.
Not outdated and nice. In reality the weapon systems were set up in about 6 minutes. Everyone thinks its a long time but its not. Nicely done Japanese allies.
BTW this isn't seriously what Japan uses as air defence, this was something Japan saw as useful only back during 1950-1960's. In fact Japan relaunched it's missile program in the late 1960's and the plan was to replace all this old junk that obviously doesn't work on new aircraft. The missiles were completed at the start of the 1980's, this is when Japan's type 81 short range missile was completed, as well as Japan's type 91 mobile SAM in the 1990's. At this point the old Vulcan you see here and other things like the 35mm Oerlikon that Japan had were considered redundant weapons and are currently only in Japan's retired arsenal, they are displayed at shows like this for fun.
Since then Japan had made more missiles types and systems as well, for example the type 11 short ranged SAM was made to replace the type 81 short range SAM, this was completed in 2011. Then you also have Japan's most powerful system, the Chu-Sam system, a medium ranged anti-air missile, this is incredibly high performance and when Japan took it to the USA for testing at the white sands facility (since Japan doesn't have enough room in Japan to test it), it hit every target, including a supersonic 163A Coyote, it says US personnel were shocked at the Japanese missile performance in destroying all targets. This Chu-Sam is Japan's most advanced anti-air missile.
Additionally there are improved versions of the old type 81 short range SAM, basically to keep it in service there was a type 81-B and today it's the type 81-C. This is just to increase the overall arsenal.
There is also a type 93 system, which is basically the type 91 mobile SAM's, but it's instead built onto the back of a Toyota truck and the firing is controlled all by computer inside the vehicle.
Therefore in total, Japan has 5 active anti-air missile systems currently in service.
Dont discount such systems yet, with the advent of massed drone swarms like in the 2020 Karabakh war where individual drones costed less than the SAMs shooting at them, AA artillery is about to make a big comeback. At least until lasers are cheap and powerful enough to take their place.
