      I want to thank you Jordan, I'm a big fan of Ali, Mislav and yourself, and your many segments on the Byzantines on the pod have really captured my historical interest and I've been reading and watching everything I can on the East Romans. Can't wait to see your future live show on the subject, and keep doing what you are doing man.

      I mean I know people don't like to hear it but the Ottomans didn't just conquer a shadow of a city and never improve it, it once again turned into the greatest city of its age filled with trade, cosmopolitanism, technology innovations, and fantastic architecture.

    What you have in Constantinople is a volatile dogpile of many mixed living standards. Things are in flux within a city of former united glory. While not downright nasty like Tudor London, this means your fortune depends "almost" entirely on how resourceful you are. Even skilled craftsman like Blacksmiths lacked stability if they aren't careful exactly who they produced for. But hey, that means even the lowly can rise if they're clever enough! The opportunities are there if you can find and exploit them.

    Especially during the late period, the hardcore Greek period of 1204-1453 (in comparison to the hardcore Roman early and the mix GrecoRoman middle) Constantinopol would be called Polis or Basileuousa by its inhabitants.

    • @ntonisa6636
      @ntonisa6636 Před rokem +3

      What fewer people know is that it also continued to be known as Byzantion, in every "period", the old name was never completely forgotten, I've seen it pop up in greek texts from different centuries from the "early period" all the way to 1453 and even beyond. I wouldn't be surprised if it had even been occasionally referred to as New Rome, that name likely also survived, at least in the title of the Patriarchate it survives to this day.
