Donald Jay Rickles (1926 - 2017) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, known especially for his insult comedy.
A headline performer at Las Vegas hotel-casinos and peripheral member of the Rat Pack via friendship with Frank Sinatra, Rickles received widespread exposure as a frequent guest on talk and variety shows, including The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman, and later voicing Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story franchise. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for the 2007 documentary Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project. (Wikipedia)
Marion Mitchell Morrison (1907 - 1979), known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed Duke, was an American actor, filmmaker, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. He was among the top box office draws for three decades. Wayne's enduring status as an iconic American was formally recognized by the U.S. government in the form of the two highest civilian decorations. On May 26, 1979, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Hollywood figures and American leaders from across the political spectrum, including Maureen O'Hara, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Mike Frankovich, Katharine Hepburn, General and Mrs. Omar Bradley, Gregory Peck, Robert Stack, James Arness, and Kirk Douglas, testified to Congress in support of the award.

I'm just hijacking the top comment to say: I always loved John Wayne, but I wish he didn't smoke. The poor guy got sick, real, real sick. In his later movies, you can hear it in his voice. I don't mean the deep, gravelly voice of a smoker, but how out of breath he was, often just standing around or walking.
I even read that in his later years and last few films, he had to use oxygen between takes...? That's so sad. John Wayne is one of my top favorite actors of all time. He always came across as strong and not taking any B.S. from anyone. Always the good guy. This is the selfish part: I want "My" John Wayne to be tall, strong, a loud voice, punching the bad guys and sticking up for the innocent people who can't protect themselves. All that masculine stuff we love. But when I see him shuffling around, hear him 'gasping' for a full breath, it breaks my heart.
He is the epitome of rugged masculinity and moral character, yet he appears weak and sick in his later movies. I wish I could go back in time and get him to quit smoking. Imagine how much longer he would have lived! Imagine how many more movies he would have been in! It's so sad and such a shame for him and his family, and for us, his fans!
Of course I never knew him and never met him, but to me and millions of others, John Wayne was AND IS, the epitome of a Western hero. The epitome of the good guy in all his war movies. He's the guy who always did the right thing despite being a flawed human. So strong in character, morals and body, yet his body was weakened by smoking.
If someone ever invents a time machine, please make one of your trips a trip back in time to save John Wayne, The Duke!!!!

I don't remember this show when new. 1975, I was either in 8th grade, or 9th, depending what month it was on tv. I always loved John Wayne's movies, watched them as a child and teen. I have a DVD of True Grit and The Cowboys, my two faves of his.

John Wayne....one of the very first movies I ever went and watched was True Grit followed by The Green Berets. My Dad never missed a John Wayne movie or Clint Eastwood. Reminds me, when Jaws came out we were watching I think a Eastwood movie and me, my brother and sister left the car and walked over to the other drive inn and set in the bleachers....Dad and Mom stayed and finished Eastwood, the good old days!
