I want to play! First got into Deftones around 1998. That's why it blows my mind how, imo, they peaked a full 10 years later...
      1) Koi No Yokan, Diamond Eyes, Saturday Night Wrist ( 3 way tie for #1...the holy trinity of their output )
      2) White Pony
      3) Around the Fur
      4) Self-Titled, Gore, Ohms ( another 3 way tie. and despite being below 5 albums...these 3 albums are still _excellent_ )
      5) Adrenaline ( the one and only Deftones album I genuinely dislike )
It's crazy to see how far they advanced after their debut. Most bands peak with their first or second album.
But to me, they peaked on albums 5, 6, and 7. When does _that_ happen to a band??
For me, I think it was the heavy influence of diverse genres....trip-hop, new-wave, shoegaze, dream-pop....that made their mid-career output so interesting and creative to me.

Saturday Night Wrist gets so unfairly overlooked, it's honestly my favourite record by them. It's incredibly immersive, winding, and songs like Cherry Waves are so dreamy. Even the risks they took with this record, like on Pink Cellphone for example, are captivating even if they don't hit the right spots for every listener. Big up every Deftones record though, been listening since Diamond Eyes and for a band that's over 30 years old now, they've got an incredible hit rate.

Nice! I love seeing SNW get love. And you're right about how dynamic it is....it's very eclectic. No one sound.
For me, SNW, KNY, and DE are all tied for first place.
I find it funny, and confusing, how the band themselves seem lukewarm on SNW.
To me, it's the first album where they really leaned heavily into their shoegaze/dream-pop influence. I also love how _diverse_ the tracks are. Diamond Eyes is super cohesive and punchy. Koi is united by a gauzy hazy noir vibe throughout.
But SNW is all over the place in terms of genre. And I genuinely love that about it....

      @NicTube777 Před 3 lety +1

@@avedic Well said! That's pretty accurate about this album being their most experimental and atmospheric. Perhaps they're a little lukewarm about it at times because of it being such a turbulent era for the band? I remember reading a lot about the personal and interpersonal struggles they had at the time, maybe it coloured the creation experience in a bit of a negative way for them. Either way, that turbulent creation process spawned a masterpiece of an album in my opinion.

It's amazing how early Deftones fans will still try and prove how awful their later albums are, but it's mainly because they just want another White Pony. As fantastic as that record is, you can't just NOT appreciate the rest of their work. Hopefully I'll finally be able to see Deftones live with Gojira and Poppy this summer.

Solid list! I can understand why it took you so long. Totally agree that they have no bad albums, you’re already batting 1,000 with Deftones lol definitely my favorite band of all time. Alright this might be the the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but here’s my list:
    9. Adrenaline // I adore this album but the only reason I put it last is due to less of a balance of aggression & softer parts but I think it’s appropriate in context anyway // fav tracks: “Nosebleed”, “Fireal”, “7 Words”
    8. Gore // Honestly it was hard for me to put this near the bottom bc I’ve listened to it millions of times and I personally think it’s perfection (like all of them lol) but I can’t stand how much hate this record gets. It gets better every time I listen to it. // fav tracks: “Phantom Bride”, “Acid Hologram”, “Rubicon”, “Prayers/Triangles”, “Doomed User”, “Gore”
    7. Ohms // This album blew the high expectations I already had out of the water. The only reason it’s at 7 is because of the comparative impact the other albums have had on me. // fav tracks: “Pompeji”, “Radiant City”, “Headless”, “Ceremony”
    6. Around The Fur // You’re right. Best nu-metal album ever. Arguably their heaviest as well, even with the intensity of the quieter moments // fav tracks: “Mascara”, “Lhabia”, “Be Quiet and Drive”, “Headup”
    5. Diamond Eyes // What a masterpiece. This album is also one of the sexiest things I’ve ever heard lol // fav tracks: “You’ve Seen the Butcher”, “CMND/CNTRL”, “Sextape”, “Rocket Skates”, “Diamond Eyes”
    4. Koi No Yokan // I’ve been sober ofc but also tripped on multiple different substances while listening to this record and it’s an entirely new adventure each time. The last song also has a very special place in my heart for personal reasons // fav tracks: “What Happened to You?”, “Entombed”, “Goon Squad”, “Rosemary”, “Romantic Dreams”
    3. White Pony // some people may crucify me for putting this in 3rd but I love how Deftones fans are almost all so different. This is the album that originally got me into them but songs like “Digital Bath” for real changed my life and the way I look at music // fav tracks: “Digital Bath”, “Knife Party”, “RX Queen”, “Change”, “Korea”
    2. Saturday Night Wrist // this album got me through some very fucked up times. The aggression and darkness of this album sucked me into a void of warmth. I believe Chino once said that it’s “evil music” and I would have to agree, in the best way lol I also like Pink Cellphone tbh, I think its hilarious and I like Annie Hardy as a person a lot. Also I have to disagree about Mein, that guitar/drum work is incredibly inspiring to me // fav tracks: “Rats Rats Rats”, “Cherry Waves”, “Rapture”, “Rivière”, “Mein”, “Beware”
    1. Self Titled // Idk if there’s many people who have this opinion but very few albums have impacted me as much as this one, I appreciate the love you gave to it. Minerva is actually that song that got me into them as well which is interesting to me. Hexagram is one of the best songs ever written imo, and the first few songs in succession (especially Needles and Pine) just fucking floor me. Also that ending of Bloody Cape... holy shit my face is permanent disfigured from melting lol // fav tracks: “Hexagram”, “Needles and Pins”, “Minerva”, “When Girls Telephone Boys”, “Bloody Cape”, “Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event”
This list could change around based on my mood but this is how I feel atm lol the top 3 will probably never change though

    7. Adrenaline (Engine No.9, Bored, Fist, 7 Words are so memorable, the rest is just pretty good but brings back great memories.)
    6. Self Titled (Half the tracks are amazing, half are a little grating)
    5. Saturday Night Wrist (Its nearly perfect only a few songs miss the mark.)
    4. Koi No Yokan (Absolutely brilliant, atmospheric and pushing the envelope of the deftones genre. Experimental and brooding. Nearly Perfect Album.)
    3. Around the Fur (Perfect from first song to the last, no song skipping on this album)
    2. White Pony (Literally one the best albums of all time, start to finish perfect album, except the added single Back to School of course. It was ahead of it time, experimental and elegant.)
    1. Diamond Eyes (I play this album on road trips simply so i know for 41 minutes i dont even need to touch my phone. Its just that damn good, headbanging and ballads that bring you to outer space. This album gets it.

We were pretty close until #6 :P
    1. White Pony (2000) - An easy front to back listen, I NEVER get tired of it. Why is it so good?! How?!
    2. Diamond Eyes (2010) - …Juicy. That’s the only description it needs.
    3. Koi No Yokan (2012) - This is a severely underrated album. I’m calling it a tie with Diamond Eyes.
    3. Deftones [self-titled] (2003) - I think everyone forgets how good this album is. And it holds a special place in my 🖤 because it was the first vinyl record I ever purchased.
    5. Around the Fur (1997) - So much angst. The signature Deftones sound. Headup is one of my favorite songs of all time.
    6. Ohms (2020) - I suspect this one might creep up higher on the list as time goes on.
    7. Saturday Night Wrist (2006) - This one seems to be every new Deftones fan’s favorite album…it was mine at one point too. It’s a nice chill, atmospheric intro to Deftones.
    8. Adrenaline (1995) - This album makes me feel like I can blast through walls like the Kool Aid man. Perfect title.
    9. Gore (2016) - Only last because something has to be. Contains many bangers, just not quite as sexy as the others.

Great band and a hard discography to rank they're all good albums. My top3 would be interchangeable:
    9. Gore
    8. Saturday Night Wrist
    7. Koi No Yokan
    6. Adrenaline
    5. Ohms
    4. Diamond Eyes
    3. Around The Fur
    2. White Pony
    1. Self-titled

Finally some self titled love! Have a similar ranking to yours with gore and snw being the worst for me. Adrenaline in my top 4 (atf, adrenaline, wp, st) diamond eyes in 5th, ohms and kny interchanchable to me for 6th/7th

@@michaelmignone5869 I don't know why the self-titled album doesn't get as much love as some of their other albums. It's a great album.

This is my personal list, ❤️
    1. Adrenaline
    2. Deftones (self titled)
    3. Around the fur
    4. White pony
    5. Diamond eyes
    6. Koi no yokan
    7. Gore
    8. Saturday night wrist
    9. Ohms
Saturday night wrist is really not that bad, but for me most of the songs remind me of my lowest point, so i dont listen to the songs that often, and i had to mention that since people are talking about how people keep throwing shit at the album.

I agree with this list. The only change I’d make would be to move Diamond Eyes up to #1 and that’s it. For me, that is hands down my favorite album.

I would say it all depends on what you enjoy from music as a whole. If you’re into heavier/more hardcore music, check out their first 3-4 albums. If you’re into more experimental or atmospheric music, I’d check out their albums post self titled. The albums that made me a Deftones fan were White Pony, Diamond Eyes, and Self Titled so maybe start there but like I said it really depends on the music you enjoy. If you’re looking for specific songs (1-4 could vary from every album) than I’d give Engine No. 9, Be Quiet And Drive, Knife Prty, Digital Bath, Battle Axe, Needles And Pins, Xerces, Cherry Waves, You’ve Seen The Butcher, Sextape, Rosemary, Gauze, Entombed, Phantom Bride, Prayers/Triangles, Hearts/Wires, Ceremony, The Spell Of Mathematics, Radiant City, and finally Ohms. Sorry for the long paragraph in response to your question lmao. Thanks for reading it as well, if you did of course (I don’t blame you if you didn’t).

I love how everyone in these comments isn't arguing about which album is clearly best, instead they're sharing their own list and saying there isn't a bad Deftones album. Wholesome.
