I’m from the UK as well and I’ve been living and working in Jeddah for over 2 years. It’s a great place to be and as many have said, the negative media coverage is not representative of my experience. In general, the people are very kind and hospitable. The changes I’ve seen in the last 2 years are really noticeable such as an end to segregation of men and women in many places. When I first came here, all restaurants had to segregate groups of men from women. Also I’ve noticed that increasingly, some women no longer wear hijabs (head scarf). And I understand that abayas (long coat which covers from neck to ankles and arms) are not mandatory. Change will be gradual but I think these changes are welcomed by most.
Make sure that you try out snorkelling (or diving). Take a boat from Obhur; it’s a great day out and corals and sea life are amazing.
Rebel Citizen we keep the old building and the area as it was long time ago not for religious matter just because we have a lot of spaces so we keep our history to be seen by others
Rebel Citizen it is a different culture, but Islamic culture does not mean oppression of the people or not respecting other faiths. Some peoples’ behaviours represents themselves but not the main faith.
Hi Darcy, im also looking like i will be moving to Jeddah soon! Any tips for a fellow brit with no prior knowledge of the city/country?
Agreed. I have seen videos of Tunis in the 1960's where nearly all the women wore full face veils. Today only a small minority of women aged between 18-35 even bother wearing the hijab. I think we will see a similar transition in Saudi

I appreciate you coming to Saudi and making such an amazing vlog, it really shows what Saudi Arabia truly is.
The culture, rituals and places around the city are really interesting to me even if I've known many things about Saudi Arabia . This vlog makes me more aware of Arabian culture and people. I really appreciate your courage. Keep going! 💫🙏🏼
@@ITSKSMTC do you even know what the word arabic means ?? Arabs are not a race . Arab is a culture made from many cultures you can find a white and brown and black arabs , being arab means speaking Arabic and living in an Arabic country and having arabic traditions. In other means those who stayed are the ones that were influenced by the arabic and islamic culture that is why they stayed not the other way around
belakhdar mohamed abderrahmane Arab nationalism today is true it is a culture, but this does not mean that there are no indigenous Arabs .. And the Arab culture is not a mixture of cultures. This is a grave mistake and ignorance .. There are many different ethnicities in the Arab world, but there is a culture specific to the Arabs .. To be origin from African, Indian, Chinese, Kazakh, Turkish, Persian or European It is not a mistake to know yourself that you are an Arab but the wrong is to sample your culture from your country and bring it to an Arab place and attribute it and know it to foreigners and new explorers of the region as an Arab culture you must say it African, Turkish, Indian, or any place to which you originally belong, you should be proud of your origins, but you do not have the right to attribute your culture to Arabic and explain that the Arabs are basically just people and cultures blending together. You say that you are an Arab. You must adhere to the Arab culture. but don’t dare to say it’s belong to Arab culture because these nationalities still have independent countries. In this way, you steal the cultures of other peoples and the Arabs do not need to steal 😒the Arabic culture one of the richest culture in the world
@@rainvast8982 Arab is not a culture made from many cultures do not try to attribute different cultures within one and call it Arabic culture
@@haantayeeb1631 it is, the Arabic culture is influenced by many cultures, it has its own uniqueness but still it's has many parts from different regions, because the arabs from the beginning of time were traveling from a place to another, even in middle east many people from different backgrounds were coming to hijjaz exactly to mecca to tarde and to hajj ( even before Islam) . It's not a bad think to be influenced from other cultures , it actually a very good thing . I'm arab btw . And again arab is not a race it's a culture most of us are brown because most of us live in a hot weather, but still there are arabs that are dark and light colored because of the climate they live in .
@@rainvast8982 why do you lie ?? to this degree do not know anything about your history ?? the Arabs from the beginning were just traveling from a place to another??? don't you know that there's two parts of the Arabs some of whom love freedom and move from one place to another "Bedouins" an some live in civilized places they built and mastered its art and architecture ????? Do you not know the kingdoms established by the Arabs BC??? do you not know the kingdom of the Nabateans ? don't you know the kingdom of sheba ??? don't you know Himyarite kingdom ?? and the AD kingdoms also do not know them ? like Arbaya kingdom and Ghassanids and others you don't know anything about it ??? nothing about Awsan,Dadan,Qetban,Kinda,Maysan,Hajr ,Tadmer,Madain Saleh ,shoaib ,,nothing ?? Who are you trying to lie to?? do you think that i am ignorant of my history and my civilization ?? unfortunately you couldn't have said that to a wrong person the Arabs are the oldest people known in history and it is these kingdoms that shaped history and civilization there is no doubt that in the past Arabes are among the most important peoples by weight in ruling the wheel of history if you want to tell lies you should at least ascertain the knowledge of the person you are talking with there are guides monuments and underlined history that are not easy to play with i doubt that you are an Arab your words indicate that you are not this information is only ignorant or foreiner or the worst malevolent

In the 13th minute, this is an African dance called Al-Mizmar, and this is because of the large number of immigrants from Africa, they transferred their culture to Jeddah, as most of the sellers in the market are Yemenis, Indians and Pakistanis, and this is because the city of Jeddah is considered the gate of the sanctuary to Mecca, so many come and pass from the pleasure of the region and many settle in and spread its culture
It is Saudi Jeddah dancing because there is no place dance Mizmar as local dance accept in west Saudi Arabia Jeddah and Makkah and Madina with knowing that there are many kinds of dancing in west Saudi Arabia but for Jeddah Mizmar is the only one
I know that I lives in Hijaz and I know this dance has become a Saudi heritage but its African origin maybe the Saudis developed it and excelled in that, even though those in the video are not Saudis wcec sc

Thank you for this video about Jeddah. You took me about 25 years back to my visits to Jeddah through my trips to Mekkah.
Jeddah is one of the most vivid, opened, civilized cities in Saudi Arabia. Its a mix of people from Africa,The Arabia, middle Asia, and Levent, who decided to settle there while they were visiting Mekkah for pilligrame. Some of Those guys who were celebrating in the end of the video are of African roots, particularly the african tribe 'Hoosa'

I was looking for videos on Babylon yesterday that's how I came across your channel I subbed after watching that series. You are great with the locals and know a lot of info about the places your in. I hope more ppl see this content, watching the videos from Iraq, Lebanon and now Saudi Arabia the ppl are so friendly, I've come to realize that the media gives little to no attention to these countries or its ppl and if they do it's negative or fear mongering. These ppl seem so kind, nothing of what I thought, I'm not sure how they are with women but it sure shows us a different story. Thanks for that. Cheers from Canada!

Thanks for the video allowing us to see parts of the city of Jeddah. It looks like, the areas that are designated as the world heritage sites are in desperate need of restoration. I noticed new construction going up in the background but compared the Riyadh, this city seems to be a bit behind for some reason. Preserving the old while building new may be a challenge here... You know after you finish Jeddah you can go to a place in the south about an hour away by plane it’s really cold and has a lot of mountains and old culture it’s not as fancy as Jeddah or Riyadh but it’s nice it’s called Abha
You guys should stop selling Abha to westerners.. It’s our tourist spot the locals who live in hot climates and deserts.. Westerners come from a way better place than Abha.. They’ve got rain, greenery, and mountains.. They want desert atmosphere.. Different from their environments..
