Let’s inspect the Smooth Q2 - a smartphone gimbal which has the potential to turn into a gamechanged due to its innovative navigation and small scale.
Starting with the unboxing, because this is a big part of each device’s story - Zhiyin got it right - the box is pretty nice, and unlike most of the smartphone gimbal packages it is quite small - because the size of the gimbal is relatively small. Here’s the first awesome fact - the panning axis is unlimited - just like the predecessor - and one of the few small-sized gimbal supporting that.
To the specs - 16 hours of shooting time. There is no way that you consume all he battery juice within a day! And adds 4 hours on top of the predecessor, which was anyways great about battery life. The total amount is 4500mah, and it can be used as a power bank too. Upgraded motors, with uinlimited panning, and rolling up to 265 degrees, and tilting up to 305, Bluetooth 5 for connectivity and a quarter-inch mount at the bottom.
I very much like the idea of the quick-release clip - they use mounting approach from the much higher grade gimbals
Modes are as simple as they can be on a gimbal. There are power button, shutter button and the joystick, which is also with a button function. That’s it - simple, clean, easy to remember. Power on; and by default it goes to pan follow mode. Press once - and you go to the next mode the all Lock mode - this is what the L stands for, then you go to the “F-mode” - the all follow mode; and we have the POV mode - where you can achieve cinematic and special effects by utilizing roll axis. Looks dope, but be careful how often you use it because having it too much is not that fun; Press one more time - and the LED will start blinking - and now you are in the so called vortex mode, which some other vendors call inception mode - and if the POV mode didn’t make you feel sick, this one definitely will.
At any point of time you can advance to the next available mode, or use two presses to go to the previous setting. In terms of switching between modes - this is outstanding, and as simple as it could be.
Let me tell you about the smartphone app - you may use it, or you may use the native smartphone app! Why is that important - because often - the developed by the smartphone maker app has better features and some libraries, which on the OS-level may improve the image quality.
You can practically fine tune everything about the performance of the gimbal - from the speed of compensation and reaction, to the motor reaction - and that can be helpful if you ever feel vibrations;
The app already has slow motion and timelapse features, and is quite easy to setup; there’s support for dolly zoom; and also - object tracking.
The last thing I don’t quite like is that it is not splash proof, there even is no cap for the USB port;
At the end - is the Smooth Q2 good - not only good, it is very, very good! Looks like 2019s smartphone gimbals are still in search for the perfect balance between size and features - and that is one of the few smaller sized options that actually do the job well.

Pretty much every smartphone gimbal can hold an action camera with that plate. That one is of course a great choice - well polished and easy to use.

Great video! Love my Smooth Q from day one though I don’t use that often... very now interested in buying the 2 version but a bit concerned Michael w those ‘shaky’ footage captures, especially compared w my new iPhone 11Pro Max and the new auto stabilize that looks better than those scenes... but luv the size and clarity of switching capture modes
Best option is to have mechanical stabilization and EIS, which the iPhone has.
What stabilisation options are available for Galaxy S7 Edge (SM-G935L). I'm unsure whether this will be suitable. My camera is in the top middle centre. Not sure how to attach a photo... 4.09 what is the plate you use? I also have an insta360 one r and wouldn't mind using this for it too if I can.
It is a basic Action camera gimbal plate. There are plenty of them on Aliexpress.

I have one question, this doesn't have manual focus/zoom control. Do you use this function much when you're shooting?
Cause, contrary to this, Hohem iSteady Mobile Plus has this feature and they advertise it heavily, plus the trigger button which Q2 lags. I still can return my Q2, and buy the Hohem. I'll be using Pocophone F1 only for the time being. Lack of these buttons has made me look for other options.
Any thoughts on this would help me very much!
I mainly use gimbals for time lapses, so hard for me to be of help here.
The poco has very good autofocus system, so even without a dedicated button - it will be fine.

Yes you can! There are lots of controls from the app.
The dji was a cool , i originally purchased the dji gimbal witg tge 4k camera in it, totally not ready for that caliber of gimbal, so I returned it and purchased the smooth q a fair while ago. Since covid 19 lockdown I've dragged out the smooth q and got it running with my note 10 plus and a 4th axis gimbal mount, i must say I'm really enjoying it all over again and am writing scripts to perhaps grow a pair and start my own CZcams channel.... we will have to see how that goes.....

I most often use the iSteady gimbals, because find their operation quite simple. Most gimbals are great at stabilization, as long as you do the so called "ninja walk" - it improves footage and stabilization a lot. I used to not do it before, but now - essential part! 🙃

Not yet, but I know a guy with fantastic channel about such stuff - called TubeNoob. He has a video about how to hold gimbals - and this can help you to improve footage shot with a stick. And you can learn really a lot from that channel. One of my favorites.

Depends on the phone. Most smartphones have sensors which will prevent any kind of overheathing.

If you want to check if your phone is supported - better get in touch with Zhiyun's support - they surely have the best kind of database to check that.
Hey, I'm planning to buy the smooth q2 but OnePlus 7T is not in the compatibility list, same with OnePlus 7. So, do you find any support issues?
Yes, it was not perfectly balanced and I guess they didn't add it to the list based on my feedback. The Wide-angle camera won't work well.
Check some other gimbals - there's the iSteadyX, the Osmo Mobile 3 and so on.

I just bought my smoothq2 few days ago.. Was very excited to use it since as the review says it works around 16 hours of use but in just 2-3 hours my smoothq2 battery already drained out. I charged it overnight though.
This is bad! No, this kind of battery life is not right - good idea to check with Smooth Q's support.

Both are good gimbals! The Smooth Q2 is famous for being quite small and pocket-sized. The Smooth 4 is known for its good performance too.
I just got this gimbal. Does anyone how to make it go to vertical mode?
I found out how. You have to grab the phone and rotate it to vertical mode. The gimbal will automatically readjust to balance in vertical mode. If the phone is big, you might have to tilt the gimbal forward a bit whilst you rotate it.

Tried the q smooth 2 and it failed several times and the motor was in the shot.. Have to use ”flashlight" mode which is code for engineering failure...
Any idea to solve problem gimbal not switching on. Pf mode is red and white light flashes beween L and POV mode?

While I prefer the Smooth Q, the Osmo mobile 3 is also a wonderful gimbal.

If you really matter about tracking recognition especially on android then dji osmo is best choice because zhiyun app on android not have really good rating

I really cant decide whether to get either the smooth q2 or osmo mobile 3. The q2 has a replaceable battery whereas the osmo 3 doesnt, but the osmo 3 has better app/features (I think) and amazing auto tracking.
Which has the better stabilization? I currently have Samsung note 8,which isnt the best for camera stabilization, so that is a big part of choosing one between the 2 aswell.
Both stabilize similarly good - it is mostly up to you - the way you walk and handle the device. In combination with the software stabilization of the Samsung phone it will be quite good.
Think about what is more important to you - better usability without the app, or the app features for tracking; ALmost each gimbal nowadays has tracking, and I've almost never used it.

The Q2 allows you to do greater movements, however is not great for phones with camera in the center of the back side of the phone.

From what I'm seeing with this new design, it looks like you can finally attach a microphone such as the Rode VideoMic Me to the headphone jack of the phone. You would be able to verify that? Especially with a windscreen attached.

It is initiated from the app - and it tracks not only faces, but also objects. Right now it is not as good as DJI's algorithm.
Can q2 follow and pan when obects move beyond view?
Only if the smartphone app can catch up tracking them. The DJI Osmo Mobile 3 was better at tracking at the time of testing.

Guess that's why - there is no dedicated zoom function.

No, it doesn't. It's integrated battery - and with some patience - it also is replaceable.

I'm always shooting with Moondog labs anamorphic lens and Moment wide angle lens, so this is not the right gimbal for me, because you can see the front motor.
Yeeeah, that will be annoying. You may check the Smooth Q1 - the arms are large enough to not be in sight.
What about holding in flashlight mode?
in POV mode double click the record botton it will get rid of the motor

Yes, you can adjust the speed of the motors from within the app.

Yes, it works well with Android phones. Both of the phones shown are Android-based.
Got mine today and too bad it doesnt fit with my Galaxy S9 inkl the Unicorn Beetle PRO Case. :-(
So i have to dismantle it everytime i use the Q2. I guess theres no other way.

Beside of that. The problems with this Q2 were too extended.
Couldnt install the firmware update. The App doesnt wanted to and has directed me to direct connection via USB . But Win10 doesnt even recognize the gimbal.
Also the app did crashed from time to time. And of course:
To use the gimbal i had to take the case off. And as you know (or not) the Unicorn is one hell of a tight piece of a case. 😋 A very good one of course.
Eventually i ve sent the gimbal back .. Interest in this kind of tech is, well.. gone 🤔
Bought the Osmo Mobile 3 and it’s pretty good... but the motors are too weak if you plug a Shure mic into the Lightning cable...
Zhiyun Smooth works much better...tend to use the Zhiyun when I want good audio and the Osmo when I want B-Roll - mainly because I like the feel better and the double click to go from landscape to portrait and back to landscape... also, the Story mode is good for quick and dirty - edited - uploads
I want this one but my phone has camera in the middle
Don't risk it - I have a OnePlus 6T and the damn motor keeps randomly appearing thus ruining the sequence in the video. MAYBE a firmware will address this but I doubt it - bottom line is that like DJI the gimbal is designed by Apple, so Android isn't considered. Fortunately for me i didn't buy this gimbal.
There is torch mode or something, it tilts out the angle so the motors won't show

This one is great if used without the app. The Osmol mobile 3 has amazing functions with the app.

Tough choice! I probably like the Q2 a little more.
if the smartphone doesn't support 60fps - that's normal. But if it does and the app wouldn't let you - you can use the stock camera app.
@@varunramachandran7879 Osmo 3 for features - its powerful and has some weight to help. The trigger allows for different engagement even if your not using the app. I don't like the DJI:Apple clique BUT my Osmo 2 is excellent with my android while just using the phone camera. Also the DJI app is more android friendly than the Mimo app.

You can zoom by pinching in on the phone; no dedicated button for zooming.
You would need 'Smooth 4' for zoom dial

Tech4All I definitely agree I carry this thing with me everywhere in my fanny pack. It even passed going through a music festival. They are somewhat strict on gimbles and this passed with flying colors 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻.

Object tracking on Samsung seems glitchy (anyone else?) otherwise a good gimbal.
It was not working well with the Oneplus 7, and the Zhiyun support have promised to fix that in the next build.

How much? It seams the same (actually it is a clone of the dji 3) like dji 3 that costs 100 dollars... If it is costs 50-60 dollars then maybe worth it
If you refer to the DJI Osmo Mobile - it costs around 120 for the gimbal only, and around 150 for the More Combo; This one is around 140. Both are very different.

So to find out the gimbal function works well is to try it with a smartphone that does not have an EIS system, So that we know the results of using the gimbal. If we try it on flagship smartphones that already have an EIS system, then the role of gimbal is not very meaningful.
Moe, got the point - and it makes sense, of course;
The app has an EIS off switch - which was used. Looks like the Oneplus has no way to stop the OIS - which contributes a little to better footage; Best results can be achieved with hardware and software stabilization at the same time.
Using it on phones with no EIS is also good - tried it on my older Poco and footage was fine. It is not as shaky as some older gumbals used to be.
@@TechMishka Poco has EIS at 1080p rear camera, i m using and find it quite all right.
Zhiyun have many battery problems. I think no protection for low battery. Forget to charge, or leave it with a flat battery for 3 months it's dead.
oh, that's terrible! Guess this one has 18650 type of battery, it should be replaceable.

The PANORAMA photo made by 1280x800 pixel pictures... LOW resolution, NOT good result. :-/ So I changed the PHOTO resolution from 1280x800 to a bigger resolution (about 3840x2160 - much better quality pictures) and the result is: the program CAN NOT take (can NOT do) panorama photo :-/ Why???

Not sure why - likely it is a problem with the software/app. Make sure to report this back to Zhiyun, they should be able to fix it.

@@TechMishka The Chinese pronunciation (not including tones) is similar to "jer" in "jersey" and then close to "yoon" (rhymes with moon). Adding a strong "r" sound in "jer" will make you sound like you are from Beijing. Soften up that "r", and you'll sound like you are from farther south. It's weird, but "zh" makes a "j" sound and "i" (without a following consonant) adds an "r" sound. If you can work on getting your pronunciation close, you'll be the first laowai (aka foreigner) outside of China I've heard pronounce this company correctly! You can do it!
I don't really see why it should cost more than DJI Osmo 3 given that they are targetted at the same market and DJI is a stronger name/brand. I forsee that prices for this will come down real fast.
it has vortex mode that the dji osmo mobile 3 is lacking.

@@wwbren im still in a delima between smooth q2 or the dji osmo mobile 3. I just love the vortex mode and 360 pan rotation of the q2. But i like the hyperlapse, timelapse and face tracking of osmo mobile 3. Huhu i cant buy both of them.
@@cocoboy5215 choose the one whose features you will use more often. Personally i think I don't see vortex or 360 pan being used in every one of my videos but hyperlapse, and face tracking can.
But then these features are software so the smooth q2 might get updated in times to come, whereas vortex and 360 pan are hardware based.
I am surprised you gave this piece of junk such a good review as you use OnePlus Android - you KNOW its designed for iPhones which is why the motor regularly either comes into view or causes the whole gimbal to vibrate if you try to move the camera to the side. Its a fundamental design problem which therefore makes it a POOR gimbal ( unless your into iPhones) Android users - don't waste your money you WILL be disappointed and will look to spend your hard earned cash again on a better product.
Interesting.....so what to buy because it seems all the gimbals out there seems to be optimized for iPhone.
I have a Samsung Note 8.....what is your suggestion
@@LittleThingsinJapan Have a look at the Moza Mini - has a lot going for it especially if you might want to attach a Rhode or a light. You 100% won't have ANY issues with android, phone size or a motor appearing in the footage.
The gimbal worked fine, and I liked the fact it is actually small; The foldable concept of the alternatives this year don't offer anything better.
The motors were powerful enough to compensate the lack of balance. And I agree with you that if the camera is not on the top-side of the phone, there might be better alternatives.
