Grandmother's don't have long to live.
Victoria is not Nicola's actual mother in any shape or form other than being an inlaw. Granny can drop dead at any given day. Victoria will have at least another 10 years to celebrate being in her 50s. I'm sure she would have spent most of her attention on anyone other than Nicola had she gone.
