Snagit: A screen capture tutorial
How to use Techsmith Snagit 2021
All screen capture is not created equal.
System Screen Capture and free snipping tools don't hold a candle to Snagit!
I have used Snagit for over 5 years and it has become an indispensable tool for me.
If you need to capture anything and everything that appears on your computer screen, markup the capture and share it, from websites to applications to videos to documents then Snagit will do the job.

Enjoy the video!

using legit snagit for years, video capture is crap tbh. it records external sounds thru the speakers, not thru the system.
In a meeting or whatever conference if u use a bluetooth kit it wont record anything but ambient sound of the room, this is really disappointing
I bought Snagit about 6 months ago and never really dug into how to use it properly. This video was extremely helpful, as yours always are. Thanks Steve!
This was so useful, thank you. No fluff, just easy to follow actionable content and I now understand how I can better use this software. I haven't been using it for half the stuff you showed us. Brilliant tutorial.
I had never heard of Snagit, but thanks to your channel, I have downloaded the free trial, and am blown away by the quality and clarity of video and audio. . I must have been under a rock all this time. Thank you for sharing.
It always surprises me how many people have yet to use it. But I am glad you are on board now!
If you get to the point that you see the value in this amazing program but the price seems a little steep remember one thing, this is a truly “you get what you pay for” item. You will have the ability to produce outstanding presentations and audio visuals. It will seem a tad overwhelming at first, but as you navigate and produce you will sit back and smile knowing that you are able to be a level above your competition. Lastly, Steve you are one of the best! Your personality and presentations are top notch!
I had a friend that used this software back in the 90s. Didn’t know it was still around. Good for them!
Hey Steve! Love SnagIt! Love Dotto Tech! What a great combo! I have been a TechSmith enthusiast for years as well, mostly due to SnagIt and Camtasia. When making screen captures, one of my favorite tools is simplify where I can place bars over images and text, but remove them from just what I want folks to see. So many uses for SnagIt - so little time. Thanks for sharing!
Another gem of a video! Your knowledge has certainly helped me a lot. I’m definitely buying Snagit. Stay motivated Steve because you my friend are making the world a better place!
I appreciate that!
Steve. I’m a long time user of snaggit. You taught me some really good enhancements I hadn’t considered. Thanks. I’ll mention their companion product Jing. It’s great for basic image and video grabs too. I use both.
Thanks Dotto, I bought this app 2 days ago and love it. Money well spent. Thanks again for pumping out this awesome content!
Great to hear!
I have been using snag it for over a decade. It is the ultimate!
Thanks for this, Steve - I have had SnagIt for years and didn't realise the powerful features I have been missing - really appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. What a time saver! I've been a DottoTech follower for a long time. You just went from GREAT to GOAT - Greatest Of All Time! Thank you, Steve!
Wow, thanks! Glad I could help.
Brilliant Steve. I've used Snagit for years and always wondered how much I didn't know. A fair bit so it turns out. Thanks a million.
Glad to help
Love it and I’ve been using it for 12 months to build documentation for developers to use to write code. I have to look a bit more especially at trimming and now you’ve pointed out the tags it’s going to be a game changer
Oh that is great! Do you use the text conversion feature at all?
I have been using Snagit for many years but just recently starting to appreciate the many features.
I am using Snagit more and more. I email a little video of my question about new software and apps to ask how to do something or report a bug. Much more effective than writing an email. Making tutorials is awesome and easy.
Nice work!
Great presentation, I've been looking for a year for this kind of tool. Many Thanks for your interesting & lively presentation.
Why am I just finding out about this! Thank you, thank you! you’re my new best friend!
It was the scrolling that hooked me! Using is for over 5 years.
Snagit is my favorite tool for screen capturing, recording video and I've been using it.
Your video is much useful for feature updates.
I've been using Snagit for simple screen capture for a few years but had forgotten it is capable of far more. Thanks for your representation Steve; a really useful refresher.
I don't think you are alone. Most people just use the simple capture, and maybe some markup.
it's not compatible with windows 8.1 😅
Wow, what a powerful piece of software, and all that for a decent one-time-fee! I've been searching for something like this. 🙌 Subscribed! And also digging your choice of background music. 😎
Phenomenal video, and YOU should do many tutorials! Much appreciated and I will buy it based upon your video.
Well done. This is easily one of my favorite tools. Like you I also use it daily. Except I’ve had it almost since the beginning. To me it keeps getting better. I’m can’t wait to see the new SnagIt 2023. Also, I am a Camtasia and Audials user.
I have been using SnagIt for 6 plus years. And today I learned how to use it. Thanks, Steve.

Love this. I am a huge Snagit fan but have difficulty to determine the best uses vs just learning what to click! GREAT video, I hope you will do more about Snagit.
Glad you enjoyed it! We will dop more!
The bit that i like about Snagit is the Torn edge effect from a screen grab
Finally a video useful, straight to the point. I liked it very much. Thanks!
So agree! Snagit is just awesome! Nothing comes close.
Indispensable bit of kit for me, but what you have shown me today is the meaning of 'haven't scratched the surface". And thanks for that. I was unaware of some of the more useful things this can be used for as well as the advantages of the library search via app! Top tips from a top man.
Thank you very much for posting this very entertaining video without a single 'like, (like...), umm, err or 'Watsup". Ultra professional stuff!!!!
KP
Been using Snagit since the early 2000s. As a technical writer I used to create all kinds of instructional material. Retired now, but still use Snagit every day.
I love how you present information! You are most definitely in you field of work
I appreciate that!
I love the Spreadsheet idea. Just built one for myself and my biggest learning? I've built 24 pages and didn't realise it. I would have guessed it was 10-15. OMG! FYI - I use Snagit + Camtasia too.
This is an amazing tool for tutorials!! Never had a need for screen capture until this year. thank you for continuing to highlight just the right tool at just the right time for me. It's a bit creepy, but that's ok.
LOL. First time I have heard that one! But glad we are on the same page.
Greetings from Croatia.
thank you so much for all knowledge you share with us.
Following your chanel will make our life happier.
Personal regards,
Freddie
Great informative video. I had been using the "snapshot" type captures (including scrolling) for years, but this takes me to a new level. Thanks!
Great to hear!
Totally agree - I absolutely love it. Thanks for a great video!
Have been using Snagit for two years now and I agree, having the prior screenshots is great. The only thing I would love is if TechSmith let us save the screenshots in folder that we make. It would be sooo much easier to find my prior work.
I've been watching your videos for years, you have the ideal personality and great Tech skills for these videos. Kudos ! and Thank you! What is your strategy for storing & organizing all of these images & videos you create over time; how to get easy quick access to them when you need them for future projects? Thanks again !
9:38 Combining images - drag and drop > awesome
I have to admit, you're good at this. Yes, I agree, Snagit is often easier to use for image manipulation than Photoshop.
Love Snagit! New features are cool too!
I've been using Snagit since 2014 and love it, I also use Flashback Pro 5 for my video tutorials if you haven't used this software check it out it's a great tool
That is quite the powerful tool. However sometimes you need simple...and Lightshot has been my go to for over 10 years. But this looks really great for anyone needing these more advanced feature!
Thanks for sharing, You should be happy we have a new production schedule set up and should be back in your feed weekly.
I use Snagit all the time - Thanks for the new ideas!
Happy to help!
Thank you Steve, for your helpful and useful review video, liked and will share
Great video, Steve. Thanks! Have lots more to explore in Snagit.
Have fun! there is a lot to unpack!
Thanks for the video, great information and well presented!
Great, simple and informative upload sir, keep doing a great job.
Thank you, I will
Such a clever CZcams channel! Very unique topics, thank you!
Glad you enjoy it!
Well done, Steve. Excellent review.
It's nice to see PC and can do basic default functions that are on the Galaxy Note series and SPen since forever ago. I wish I came across this PC software a long time ago because the desktop was a clunky experience trying to screenshots and share in general. But now I see the mobile workflow dominating as you are not tethered to a ball and chain of a PC at a location plus mobile chips are powerful for up to 8k video editing. I'm waiting for the Samsung S8 Ultra tablet that comes with an S-pen and with that all the crazy stuff you can do with thanks to the Note series smartphone. I live a mobile computing life. I may give this a try if I'm stuck doing work on the ole desktop.
SOLD! Phenomenal instructional video. My question is: if I have both a Mac and PC can you buy one license or do you at least get a discount? Thanks, and I am a new subscriber
I've been using Snagit for years but have not had time to keep up with all of the bells and whistles introduced with each update. So I never knew what could be done using templates. Thank you SO much for demonstrating that. So handy! Ditto (pun intended!) regarding the video/screen-casting functionality. I know It is an awesome program and that I've been under-utilizing it, so this "quickie" overview/demo has really readied me to take advantage of its capabilities more fully. Can't wait!!👌
Windows 10 The Control panel comes up, down, or sideways. You decide.
Steve, I do love your work. I use your videos all the time.
A very helpful video, thank you for _sharing_
I used to be a big fan of snagit. Used it for I bet over a decade professionally. Now there's the built in snag routine. Hit Windows+shift+s. It's on every windows 10 box. Now you can cut whatever you want and paste it into something like Word. No saving a file or any of that. This is the way I do it now.
Thanks for the good times Snagit. I've moved on.
Weak sauce dude.
Everything works at its best!!
Well done, this sold me!
Great video but quick question - how do you change the shape of the onscreen recording video from a square to the orange circle? I might have to stick with Loom until I can figure that out lol.
Snagit looks very interesting indeed.
Love dottotech videos. I have been following dottotech since he left a Canadian broadcasting station many years back.
I think that I will try Snagit, soon.
I see several microsoft products this works with, does it upload to microsoft forms?
Thanks a lot man!
Hi hi!!! Very informative!! Amazing quality! But I have a question: Where have you been the last few months?
Good question! we have been concentrating on ouw weekly webinars dott.to/ww
Maybe I missed it but was there a save to pdf in the save drop down menu?
Hi, Steve! How the heck are you? 😉 Quick beginner's question if you wouldn't mind …
I notice that your background is slightly out of focus. I really like that look. Is that a setting you can do inside Camtasia, or is that done within your camera hardware settings?
Thanks!
I am interested in this software but I am espcially interested in the video capture capabilities.
Lots of features indeed. But I also find it a little time-consuming to use. For quick captures that require just a frame, an arrow or a quick textbox, TechSmith also has the free "TechSmith Capture", which takes the place of my beloved but sadly departed Jing.
I'll take another look at Snagit though. It seems great for captures that have a bit more 'longevity', so to speak.
Bang on Steven, We will do a video on Capture, and the bonus, it's free!
Nothing else is close means, no other competitor have tried right.
It does not mean that SnagIt is ultimate.
I face lot of issues everytime after some idle time. It gives me blank or black pages when I capture a screen after some usage.
I have either restart my sysyem or just find a regilar printScreen or snippit in windows until I restart.
Is it happening to me alone? Still that is not correct.
Amazing app. I just wonder with all that it can connect to, how secure is it?
Steve, can you share to Evernote? I've been using Evernote for many years and right now I use Skitch to capture pictures and screen shots to put into Evernote. Sounds like Snagit might be easier.
How do I order videos I created in the order I wanted, example I may have created 2 videos and they are in the wrong order I want to put second video first and the first video to 2
I have been using Snagit since 2010 and also Camtasia since version 7 to 2021 edition. I use Snagit far much less than Camtasia. Could you compare and contrast both tools please!
I want to record video and sound of many instructional videos so I have copies on my system. What are the benefits of Camtasia over Snagit, or the other way around, for that purpose? Thanks everyone!
Great video? Who knew? Thank you!
Snagit was the best investment I did in 2020. It helped/s so much in my daily work
Couldn’t agree more, it changed the way I put information in my documents
Thanks, teacher!
Do they have student pricing? I am kind of broke. Also, is it a one time purchase? And if I buy it once, can I use it on multiple devices? Like my pc, mac, and iOS devices? I been tasked to doing a blog post on my thesis for software I have been testing for a the company that loaned me a license. Also, it would be great for my thesis defense,to show the steps I took in the modeling I am doing for a watershed
Will Snagit allow for a talking head like you have in this video or is it an either or thing? Thank you!
I use to prnt screen and select what i wanted to capture with the crosshairs, and it would automatically, right away open in editor, somehow ii messed it up, and now it has brought in that extra step of the options to select what you want to do, capture or video or whatever. Do you know how to get rid of that extra step, and take me right to the editor part. Please help. I do not want the all in one tool bar, i just want to make my selection and soon as i select my area, it opens in editor Many Blessings
Question: When I follow your instructions the control panel remains in the picture and winds up being a part of my capture. What am I doing wrong?
I think your end summary can have a darker undertone to it: A tool that gets better over time means that leaving that tool becomes more and more difficult. This is exactly how platforms and ecosystems end up locking users into them.
Why would you attach a negative connotation to that?
A company improves it's product and you consider it to be manipulative?
@@dottotech Not manipulative, just a potential vector for abuse. If you develop a good product, and get people invested in it, then you may reach a point where you can do pretty much whatever you want, and the users will accept it as the new standard, because leaving has become too costly. A great example of this would be Adobe with their Creative Cloud. I personallly know people who have used Adobe stuff professionally for a long time, and they can't afford to leave it, but at the same time they don't like paying subscriptions for a bunch of apps they will never use.
Personally, a similar concern has lead to me moving to using Linux instead of Windows. Microsoft looks to be piloting their programs to subscription models, and Windows is becoming a datamining/advertisement platform. I didn't want to risk a scenario where one day I wake up, and Microsoft has announced that the next Windows version will require a 9.99€/month subscription and everyone on older versions of Windows will be forcibly upgraded to it.
All that being said, your demonstration of Snagit does make it look like a very powerful tool for quick, easy, minor photo editing stuff. Probably great for making custom CZcams thumbnails, or adding helpful pictures to a PDF guide.
Looks like great software. Can you setup hot keys?I’ve been using greenshot for free for years. I use it almost daily.
The editing, text capture, and ability to capture video looks like a good value. Next time I need to do some marketing materials I might have to spend some of my moldy money lol.
Yes you can!
Great video… love Snagit. What software are you using to capture/create and edit this video?
Screenflow?
Camtasia?
Premiere Pro?
???
Hello, Russell. For this video, we used Camtasia. You can also use Screenflow.
@@dottotech Thank you for your reply... 'Have fun stormin' the castle'
Great tutorial! You got me at "lettuce on my teeth" 😂
But what about Camtasia when it comes to screen recording?
Am I only able to capture part of my screen using Snagit, while Camtasia can only capture the entire screen?
Nice video, but...I don't get a "scrolling window" I am on the free trial - also, when I do the panoramic capture then try to share it, the image is tiny...when I enlarge it, it gets blurry. Is there a fix for these? Thanks!
Hi Steve, thank you so much for all your valuable tutorial. Whenever I need help on topics related to computer tech and software, your channel is one of my favorite resource library to go to. May I know what screen casting software you are using to create the above tutorial? Is it possible to create a similar talking head video using Screenflow ( with a round shape talking head and an outline for the circle where yours is orange in color)?
Great to hear Alvin. We did this week's video using another Techsmith tool, Camtasia. But you could most certainly do it as well in Screenflow. We used to use it exclusively, but have switched to Camtasia because it has better workflow features.
Here is a 3 part series on how we used to produce our videos
dottotech.com/make-youtube-video-tutorials/
Thank you Steve. Wow, the 3 part series are very useful. Thank you. 🙏🏻🥰
I am confused about where my screenshots would be kept. Heather Major's comment below reads as though SnagIt is an online product. Does this mean I cannot save the work I do to my own computer?
The built-in Snipit tool made Snagit obsolete for my needs and it's free.
Amazing
Why can’t I find a video detailing how I capture a video I want to share???
Snagit looks incredible.... and free? in chrome store it only has a few users and 4/5 stars?
Are you using the paid version now?
Ii have been using Movavi screen capture for years, and no other software comes close.
Hey Mr Dotto, how do you put the orange circle around your face in your videos?
I use Camtasia, with an Alpha channel
Thank you for sharing - may l ask, is it possible to produce a video detailing how you put your video together in terms of using zooms and pans on the screen and, (for me, most importantly) how to produce the cool cursor effects such as the orange animated dash circle - just love that. If you have already produced a video on these topics, apologies, l haven't found it yet so perhaps a helpful nudge in the right direction is needed.
Smiles, Su :)
I have a series on how we create our videos here dottotech.com/make-youtube-video-tutorials/, But we are now using camtasia instead of Screenflow, and have changed our process a bit. We do have some videos planned for next months on our new process, so keep your eyes oprn!
@@dottotech Thank you for taking the time to reply, l appreciate it. I will indeed keep my eyes open :) Thank you for all of your fab tutorials. Love your work :)
Are you able to create a reaction style video with Snagit?
