  • The Super Champ X2 Vintage Modified Tube Amp is a tube guitar amp that also uses modeling to create 16 different voices (different amps). These amps actually sounds and feels fundamentally different from each other and they sounds great. I'm gonna play it today with a Fender Telecaster.

    Replace the 10" with an Eminence Ragin' Cajun' or Copperhead and it's practically boutique, punches waaaay above it's literal and figurative weight

      Good options, but I put the WGS G10C in mine and I think that is the best upgrade option if you want to retain a more traditional blackface tonal character. I have also heard the Weber 10F150T is stellar.

    • @petermaas8132
      @petermaas8132 Před 2 lety

      I tried upgrades with 1058, Greenback, C10Q, Ragin Cajun and Copperhead. All work well, more power power, especially more bottom, compared to the stock speaker. The Copperhead I left in as to my ears it was the best "Fender-like" honk and added decibels in my X2. Ragin Cajun also good, but changes the character more, so I put that in my XD. Jensen C10Q made the clean channel sound better, but I mainly use the gain channel settings.
      Both XD and X2 are very nice and versatile amps, slightly different sound palettes, great for stereo use.

    Great review of a fun amp.
    A friend gave me one after rescuing it from a flooded warehouse. We cleaned it up and he put in some original Westinghouse 6v6s from a 1958 magnavox hifi stereo. It sounds amazing for its size. The original groove tube tubes still work but the magnavoxs are staying in!👌
    The reverb is better than any real spring I have ever played through.
    My only wish would be to separate the reverb from all the other effects.
    I have not played an original Paul Rivera era Super Champ, but can’t help but think Fender still had an ear to the original when this was designed.
    If a tube Princeton or Deluxe is out of your price comfort zone, ( just because you could afford something doesn’t mean you want to spend the money) this amp will fit the need.👍🎸

      Funny you should say that. I was just uncomfortable paying so much for the new 5 watt vibro champ reverb 900 + or princeton 1400 +. Discovered these little gems and got a nice one with upgraded tubes and speakers and a footswitch for 250. Super stoked on it.

    Woah - its my practice amp. Johan Segeborn is into it! How cool. It's a great little amp, no question. The build quality is not the greatest, and the little speaker gets overwhelmed easily, but no question it has awesome tones. Hard to beat for the price. The emulations of Fender amps are particularly special.

    Was honestly expecting a slew of people complaining that this is "not a REAL tube amp!" because of the modeling. Which is either a testament to how far amp modeling has come in 30+ years or how much people have been able to accept them in that time. Either way, killer playing, I played the Fender Champion 100 (solid state) and found it to also sound great, minus the internal fx, but only because no parameter adjustment for them.

    Grèat job demoing this John! You really made the great sounds on this amp come through. Like others are saying, this is the best demo of this amp on the internet. I own it and was really surprised at the sounds, I'm sure from the power amp tubes, and one pre amp 12ax7, but the modeling is great too, so many great tones. I've also plugged in a cab with a 12" jensen alnico 40 watt to it and wow! Even more amazing sounds, and the bass doesn't flub out like the 10" does a little. Thanks! 🙏🏼

      Only one 12ax7. That's the PI supplying the in phase and out of phase signals f the 2 6v6s.
      No valve preamp section unless you include the PI.

    I have a lot of experience with that amp, a friend had the non-usb version since school and we would jam and alternate amps, I bought the new Head version 4-5 years ago and used it with a lot of cabinets, but it's the least tube-sounding tube amp I've played, yes, a lot of dynamics but it doesn't have the slow attack or the compression of tubes when you dime it.
    The first channel has one sound with a peculiar frequency response in the mids no matter the cab and the second channel models are a bit over the top, like a full digital amp. Also because it doesn't compress and distort as much as you'd expect, it's quiet for 15W, for anything non-metal it's way quieter than a Blues Junior (both in the same cab).
    I finally sold it after a year of having an ad online and I haven't regret it, to me it's as if you had
    a 50W Champion but with a non high voltage tube pedal on the way in.
    Effects are quite acceptable but to me this amp's purpose is unclear.
    Too loud for home use, too digital sounding for recording, not loud enough for most gigs
    and in the end too expensive for any of that.
    It checks all boxes so it's not really built to ace anything,
    for me it's either Champion, Champ 600 or Blues Junior.

    Excellent demonstration of what that amp can do.
    I bought my X2 less than a year ago. It's a home use, only amp. I loved so much about it. Extremely versatile. It probably had maybe 40 total hours of play time on it in the first 10 months and it started making very loud crackling noise...very loud.
    Turns out that it's a tube problem
    Fender told me that the tubes are only guaranteed for 90 days. I wasn't expecting that from Fender.
    Apparently, I'm not alone with this issue. I did plenty of comparison shopping, video demos on this platform and didn't try looking up "complaints" until I had the second occurrence.
    My music store is awesome and working on a solution for me.

    • @anderj02
      @anderj02 Před 4 lety

      @@rolux4853 Everything here is overpriced. Too many taxes and greedy importers/sellers. A Fender Twin Reverb costs 3.750 dollars. The Bassbreaker 18/30 costs from 2.650 up to 4800 in some sellers!!! Importing a heavy amp is very expensive too. Import fees represents more than 100% of the price, plus shipping. In addition to that, there's a currency problem. 1 Euro = 6,10 Reais. 1 dollar = 5,23 Reais. Another bizarre example: the extreme low cost interface behringer umc22 costs €33,62 @thomann.de. Here it costs €196. While you buy a twin reverb, here we can get a champion.

    I really liked the Channel 1 (clean channel) as well, in addition to the 16 modeling amps on on Ch. 2, I have seen the clean channel compared on CZcams to a Princeton Reverb. Both are 6v6 15 watt amps, and they don't sound very different. I've never played a Princeton, but it seemed pretty close in my mind. The amp takes pedals great on the clean channel as well.
    I often used an extension cab with a 1x12 or 2x12, but also found that for at home, low volume play, the 10" speaker in the amp is great for early breakup and tonal range.

    Factory default for modeled amps in channel 2 has speaker/cab modeling enabled. This helps the Di sound but hurts the live speaker sound. Use USB and free fender fuse app to disable the speaker/cab modeling on channel 2 to get the best sound from the real amp and real speaker...
