  • It felt like Alan Wake 2 was coming. Remedy even created a functioning internal prototype. But then the game, like its fictional protagonist, simply vanished. Here's a look at the game that almost was.

disagree, it was a let down. this looked waaaaaaaay cooler than what we got. for instance, instead of changing details to match the story, we have a stupid menu where we switch between "realities" (mind place / writer's room). i hate this, i think it's lazy, and i don't think it works. the original concept was so much better.

What was planned here felt too close to the original. You know, like an expansion pack, but not a true sequel that really expands and tries something new. Like American nightmare was but imagine it had plot.
Im very happy they took the time and made the game they did in the end. Alan wake 2 is reminiscent of the original with the flashlight mechanics but it feels like an entirely new game set in the same universe.
Still, cool to see some ideas did stick and stay, like with Mr scratch (although sad they scrapped the urban legend becoming true, that's a neat play on cauldron lake magic) and the writing things and them appearing.
My only disappointment is the sequel-hooking ending. I expected part 2 to end conclusively. But I guess its an expanded universe franchise now.

    • @berice4390
      @berice4390 Před 8 měsíci +3

The overlaps you did as saga was essentially the use of urban legends. Also I feel like the second game is usually the game that expands on what we already know. Explore them and so on. As like you said it’s a connected universe but also there’s just a lot for them to dive deeper into with these characters

It's crazy seeing this compared to what the game became- this just goes to show that sometimes a project just needs *time* to make it great. The best ideas will linger, and new ideas will develop, and other projects can help with that exploring and skill-development process. Remedy is a great games company, and that is of course from their writing and their technical skills but it's also from their decision-making and the how savvy they are on the creative and people side of things.

Everyone who is wishing for Alan Wake 2, keep in mind that Remedy has said already many times that they are most likely going to make it, when THEY think the time is right....also keep in mind that although the first game eventually sold 4.5 million copies or something like that, with 360 and PC sales combined, the sales during first weeks and months were not that impressive, the game barely sold little over 1 million during its first year, which was dissappointing for both Remedy and Microsoft.
While you can argue that it was because of the game being Xbox 360 exclusive at first, the bigger reason was that the gamers went for Red Dead Redemption that was released during the same week as Alan Wake....for both MS and Remedy it very much seemed at that time that Alan Wake was not going to be succesfull enough to be worth to turn into bigger franchise, so propably at that point the decision was made for new IP instead.

SureShotSav I wouldnt say so...during its 5 years in development Alan Wake got actually quite much publicity, it was featured on covers of quite many game magazines and (first) as Xbox 360 exclusive, Microsoft made sure the game was also in spotlight during E3.
Again I think the main 3 main issues were that the game was released too close to Red Dead Redemption (and 2010 spring was quite busy overall in terms of big game launches), the biggest hype around the game had propably died by the time of its launch and lastly the game got mainly "only" good reviews, but not great ones.

I revisited this video when they released the Remaster this year, and here we are again. I really hope we get Mr. Scratch in the sequel, he was great in American Nightmare, but the possibilities now with the current technology....oh yeah, can't wait.
I know the trailer they released is not actual gameplay but, considering how nice Control looks, especially with RT, oh...I mean, yes, all of it, need it. And it'll be a full Survival Horror game, I want to see Remedy's take on the genre, will they be influenced by the biggest survival horror games, will they make the game world more open and explorable, like the original intention with Alan Wake was? They wanted open world, originally but had to cut it down, and that actually made Alan Wake feel so special thanks to that. Hopefully they take what worked well for Alan Wake, and refine it, a huge empty world would be useless, so I hope it's packed with details, I'd be fine if the world was like Control's, or even the early Silent Hill games, really.

    • @Sholvacri
      @Sholvacri Před 3 měsíci

@@Sliver In Alan Wake 2? It's obvious the previous incarnation of Scratch was based off Alan's "wild side" personality, you know, the one the newspapers and paparazzi were always talking about, but tuned up to 11, absolutely crazier, so I liked American Nightmare's Scratch a lot for that, absolutely bonkers stuff there.
But for Alan Wake 2 I don't mind that the Scratch "version" we got was just pure darkness, almost no personality just angry all the time, obsessed all the time with his one goal, etc. What fascinated me even more is the Thomas Zane we got, now that one I loved even more, I'd love to see more of that side of him.
Not mentioning more details because spoilers, but there was a ton of cool stuff.
Obviously there's still a ton of ambiguous stuff and non answered questions and the game still has two DLCs coming so, who knows, but I was satisfied with this "new Scratch" since I don't think it's supposed to be the exact same as in previous games.
I don't think anything can beat the fun I had watching his scenes in American Nightmare though, so yeah I miss that side of him, but Alan Wake 2 in general was awesome, can't wait for the first DLC to come, specially with that title it has :P

I recently finished replaying the original Alan Wake game on PC. This makes my fifth or sixth play through. I have to resist replaying it again immediately as I'd like time for the memory of it to fade a bit before I plunge back into the story. The original Alan Wake may have had some awkward controls, but even that didn't detract from the game for me. The story and characters were absolutely gripping! That's what keeps me coming back for more. The visuals were also stunning. For my money you just can't beat Alan Wake.
I would love to see something come from this demo. I'd even love to see other anthologies in the same universe. I still re-watch the Bright Falls series from time to time just to get that same feel. Alan Wake is a great game and I'm constantly watching for the next installment.
All that said... I wasn't a big fan of Alan Wake's American Nightmare. It was a decent game. The story was interesting enough. But it lacked the same feel. I didn't get the same connection to the characters I felt from the original.
So please, work on Alan Wake 2 or some other installment for the universe with the same (or similar) feel from the first game. As soon as it's available on PC I'll be there ready to shell out hard earned cash for it. If there's one thing I love, it's a good story.

Yes, there is a sprint key in all modes. In fact there are certain times when you need to sprint in the game to avoid taking damage. It's been a few months since my last play-through, but I believe on the PC it's the shift key. It should be the same key as your dodge anyway.
By the way, anyone who enjoyed Alan Wake, they did a fantastic prequel web series called Bright Falls. It ends where the game begins. They did an incredible job on it. It's well worth watching. The whole show is about 30 minutes.
I recently purchased Quantum Break, but haven't yet had time to play it. It looks incredible! I'm hoping now that they've finished work on that game they'll make another one for the Alan Wake universe.

This is a bit of a long post but I have to get all this out of my head loll.
This game was the definition of near perfect writing! The story was such a breath of fresh air for me! The dynamics the game used to tell the story was compelling: the TV series like presentation, the music whenever it was featured, the manuscripts, that both foretold and foreshadowed events in the game! The environment, the characters, and how all these elements stayed consent to the narration. The voice acting and dialogue was literally 10/10 too!
And man this story! the plot and its various elements! This game actually has a deep lore! The way the plot thickens gradually...and how as you play along uncovering more clues, you start to both understand more and yet also somehow the more confused some things seem and the more curious you become. The more answers you get, the more questions you have! And yet it does not feel at all like the plot is overwhelming or "going away" from you. All dialogue set pieces were spot on, including whenever aspects such as humour was used in the game. Nothing ever felt forced! This was pure genius writing IMO!
Finally how the game explores the fight between light vs the dark so literally...where you are literally shiny a light etc at these dark enemies to help destroy them! It was very cool combat mechanics! And it's sad that after the 1st game and it's two DLCS the series just stalled.
AW is not a perfect game but had a lot of things done perfectly. It is honestly one of the best games ever made in the horror genre! Very original!
Looking at this gameplay footage it is obvious how much passion was continued to be poured into it by the Devs and team. And all of this just makes me so sad that the series just stalled! It's mind boggling! What an absolute shame if this little gem is never explored further 😢

Since we know Alan Wake 2 will have alternate outfits, hoping we get Early Design and "Wake 2 Prototype" outfits for him!

so far it looks like sagas path in alan wake 2 will have the original idea for alan wake 1. an open world version of bright falls where you talk to locals in the day and hunt at night. while alans story is gonna be stuck inside an altered version of new york and be pure horror..
rewriting reality within the dark place. not 100% certain but Lakes interviews seem to point to that

That's basically how it plays out. I like Saga's chapters a bit more personally. Just better horror IMO. Of course Alan has the incredible "we sing it" chapter.

I hadn't realized until now how much I've missed The Taken. while the idea behind them is simple, it works great with the overall atmosphere of the franchise, and I hope that the sequel will come out soon.

Such an amazing demo. Almost everything in it feels like a perfect sequel. I especially love the enemies's interaction with the world. It doesn't feels like a small work just to test ideas, it feels like a true sequel and good one at that. Remedy, come on, please make Alan Wake 2...

While there were a few things I would've loved to see in the game (boss characters, for instance, were sorely missed) Alan Wake is still one of my top ten favorite games of last generation. Would LOVE to see a true sequel some day!

Really seems like this version of Alan Wake 2 would be similar to the original/AN. It makes me glad they were never able to make it until now. What they ended up making was in a whole other league than what this concept looks like. Really goes to show that sometimes waiting is the better choice than rushing to make the next game. Sometimes the technology just needs to catch up to what you truly want to make.

All us die hard Alan wake fans that so desperately wanted the mainstream gamers to accept Alan wake 1 so we would get a sequel , and it never happened ... We never got this game... but what we did get, was worth the 13 year wait... still I would love to play even just this 1 demo level.

The Alan Wake 2 teaser trailer does give the impression that Remedy are going to lean on the evil doppelganger theme to some degree. I hope that they also incorporate the mechanics and dynamics used to liven up the world as showcased here. Exciting times!

Damn...and I mean damn this looks good. I can see the concepts that went from here to QB, but in my opinion I think the reason why Remedy shelved AW was to make the notion that he was stuck in darkness fighting (or typing) to write himself out while Scratch and Alice were free, all the more real...After QB is AW 2, by that time it will be at least 8 years (since AW 1 released in 2010).
