How To Play Gojira Style Pick Scrape, Rake and Slides

- A how to lesson on play Gojira style pick scrapes, rakes and slides.
A lot of requests for this one. I believe the main difference between how I play them and other versions is I utilise my thumb to create higher harmonics and incorporate a pick scrape at the end of the rake.
When playing these rakes and scrapes I aim to create a messier noise, avoiding clean harmonics. However be careful to keep the distortion under control as too much and you loose some of the clarity of each string.
Questions and comments below! I read them all!
And yes, there will be some more Gojira lessons in the future đ
Thanks for watching!

In a French interview (my native language), Joe said that the left hand was just for "visual effect" like a magician who attracts the attention as everything was happening with the right hand.
So, for the "sliding left hand", it seems it is just for the show or maybe he was feeling like doing it this way.
If I found back the vido, I could link it to you.
(You have a really really cool guitar. The sound is great)
Merci. If you find it please do link it! I'd be interested to see it!
@@ShadowMantraSteve czcams.com/video/6LuEH9OCnFg/video.html
At 11:09, he starts to speak about this. And 11:19, he speaks about visual effects" (the sliding left hand but "everything is with right hand")
I can try to translate it in English some parts if you need it. ^^
@@olivierorsola Merci beaucoup! I'll see how I get on with it đ
Well for what it is worth Joe sure fooled me as I was just watching Explosia live at Hellfest and grabbed my guitar to try and figure out what he was doing with his left hand to make that sound. Of course, nothing I could do would replicate it so here I am again - thanks, SMS!
Itâs a dean cadillac
Thanks Gojira, now all deathcore bands use these in every breakdown đ
I like thatâs the only thing people donât like about Gojira and itâs not even their fault lol
Thanks morbid angel
No one does it like them lol
The Ultimate Gojira Guy
I didn't know about that thumb thingy... I've always wondered how they manage to get different pick scrape sounds. Now I finally know! Mercy
More than welcome đ€đ€đ€
Dude no joke Iâve looked like a total idiot for several hours not realizing I needed thumb
I actually found out about it accidentally. I am not an experienced player so whenever I tried raking my thumb would get in the way and I thought to myself, hey that sounds more like how they do it. Ever since Ive been doing that.
the pitch is dictated by where the rake is performed not the thumb contact
Great lesson! The thumb scrapping along is something that isn't super intuitive, but it makes all the difference.
Thank you! I only really found out about using the thumb to catch higher harmonics by just digging in hard with the pick to get a stronger attack and it was bit of a happy accident. I think it definitely helps to get some of those higher pitches in that cut through more.
the pitch is dictated by where the rake is performed not the thumb contact
This was the part I've been missing in my scrapes! This video broke it down perfectly.
Totally thought you were French until watching this.
I was wondering where he was from this whole time, I figured French or American
Been searching for this technique's name to put in some of my tab notes but I had no idea what it was called. Everyone on youtube seems to call waterfall/ palm harmonics rake harmonics which was unhelpful. I guess it doesn't have an official technique name. Awesome video, thanks heaps mate!!
No problem! Glad it was helpful. I don't think I've come across a standard name for it either really.
Awesome tutorial! Would you ever consider doing a tutorial for the way Gojira executes pinch harmonics like in their song Magma? Seems to be one of the more difficult techniques.
I did a lesson earlier this year on harmonics, hopefully it helps! czcams.com/video/B1l2r8GAtYQ/video.html
For magma the key is changing the position of the picking hand to hit the different harmonics. I did a cover of it that should help you see what's going on a bit better czcams.com/video/hwbh7AKGqug/video.html

This is really helpful! I have been wanting to do this since listening to Fit For An Autopsy and Trivium đ€
Thank you so much for this one, I was trying my best but just couldn't figure it out, then when you showed the thumb trick.. then it clicked!
Glad it helped! Once you've got the hang of it it's fun to throw in other songs.
Just getting back into playing guitar after taking 10 years off... Thanks for making this so simple to figure out!
Glad it helped and enjoy playing again!
I always tried but it never worked perfectly... Now I know why. Thanks dude! Your work is awesome
You're welcome, glad it helped!
Thanks man! The thumb was the missing piece I needed.
That is one sick guitar
Thank you, it's a Dean Cadillac
Man your content just keeps getting better and better. Hoping to see more tutorials/lessons in the future đ€đ»
Thanks, and yes I'll be doing some more tutorials going forward đ€
Shadow Mantra Steve keep em coming we need more Steve!đ€đ»
thumb scrapping really works! AWESOME TECHNIQUE!
Just subbed! I was trying to learn Flying Whales and was experimenting to get the correct harmonic sound. You explained it very thoroughly with great camera angles! Thanks.
Glad it was helpful. The scrapes are fun to do once you've got them down!
Faaaaaantastic. Nice work đ€đžâ„ïž I'd got this nailed but adding the thumb in the scrapes was the secret weapon.
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much this is such a great help!! I'm self taught and usually so slow learning anything different like this. Much appreciated! đ€đŒ
Glad it helped!
Thats a beautiful guitar my dude. Great trick tip
Amazing video! Will try!
great job mateđ
Love the hoodie
Thank you so much, now I understand and I can do it ...

Amazing! Thank you đ€đ»đ€đ»
Thank you so much Iâve really been struggling with this
Glad it helped!
Beautifully done đđ»đ This truly helps
Glad it was useful!
Thanks man! Great video like always!
Thank you đ€
I can definitely say that this technique is a lot easier with the 12mm thick pick I use
BALISTIK928 / yĂžu mean a 1.2 right
@@naveenwilson-moola5570 I meant what I said. I really only use 6mm at the least but prefer using my 12mm when I know where it is
Who Are You? With a pick thatâs at least 3mm thick you really donât even have to turn the pick at all to get a loud and clear pick scrape
@Stephen j it's contoured to a point at the tip. It's the thickest at 12mm in the middle where I hold it
I use a 2mm and a 3mm, 12 is really big...
But gojira don't do solos so makes sense, kinda
Haha I watched your cover of âof blood and saltâ and then looked up how to pick scrape and found you again! You sir are legit with the shit
Wow. Thank you! Would have never figured this out myself
Glad it helped!
thanks
Informative đđđ
Immolation has some cool pickscraping techniques i never noticed until i saw them live. too bad it was before camera phones were good that i saw them
I need to listen to them a bit more for sure
Right? And morbid Angel Nothing Is Not
SUBSCRIBED, thanks for the great lessons
Thank you and you're welcome đ€
Yes!
Thats a beatiful Dean lml
Thank you, definitely one of my favourite guitars!
First time I saw that technique was on "Use my third arm", by Pantera
Easily the best video I've found looking for a breakdown of this technique đ€đ€đ€ also you're fucking awesome dude
Glad it helped, thanks!
Now I can play Where Dragons Dwell 100 percent accuratelyđ
Ty!
Morbid Angel pick. "Nothing Is Not" from Formulas Fatal To The Flesh
Thanksss...
Ok I get that this video was 3 years ago, but DUDE, THE CADILLAC!!! Love that guitar
Still my favourite!
@@ShadowMantraSteve Itâs on my wish list đŻ
Funny because you may be English but you really look French man. As a native I swear you got that look.
Love your videos, man, really nice content !
Now I know how to lol thanks man
Glad it helped!
Amazing lesson, could you do another lesson on galloping if you havenât already
I have an exercise video up that might help

Also some gallop riffs though some are a bit tricky
czcams.com/video/7DTCSJu6zqg/video.html
What about morbid Angel trey Azaghoth nothing is not harmonic raking thing??
How do u get ur amp to sound like that, i got the scrap down but it cant sound like the recording without the right setup
U have an almighty mike tyson voice
I notice the very last scrape in flying whales is a little higher sounding then the rest. How does one replicate that
You playing D standard with 11-46 ? u had to set up ur guitar to that ?
I had to tweak the intonation and truss rod a little bit but nothing major
the pitch is dictated by where the rake is performed not the thumb contact
Wow, I feel kind of dumb now, I thought you just did left hand harmonics and raked the pick with the left hand, that's why my pick rakes always sound so bad.
isn't the left hand supposed to be on the 5th fret so you get more harmonics
I still can't do that
I canât get it to work idk why
Why I can't scrape?đhelp
đ€đŠđ·
đ€
Is it my pickups
It takes a while and some tweaking/experimentation to find it. The pickups should affect it too much, but having enough gain/distortion definitely helps!
definetely doesnt work on bass lol
Haha not really, maybe on a six? But Jean does get some very nice big bass slides
@@ShadowMantraSteve yeah I just slide instead. I don't know if it would work on a 6 I have a 5 and hell no I don't get that sound lol
I totally thought you were american đ
Mmmm i love you
Anyone came here for Gojira aka Godzilla?
Jumping in with some pronunciation advice: "Gojira" is an English approximation to how the Japanese properly pronounce "Godzilla". Phonetically it sounds like "Goh-Zji-La" with the 'Zji' being important as it's not quite a "Zee" sound or a "Gee" sound but a mix of both. It is not "goJIra" or "GOjira" as I have heard others say. Please adhere to the above pronunciation and respect both the band and the nation from where it took its name.
Jesus christ is coming repent choose him today he loves you
