JEWELRY PHOTOGRAPHY at home. How to take jewelry photos for Instagram and Etsy!

- In the past I struggled with the product and jewelry photography. I didn't know how to take jewelry photos at home for my Instagram or Etsy shop, that would be interesting and captivating, and that would get likes and sales. I started experimenting and tried something different. Not your typical product photography in the light box! I added some creative props for product photos, different backgrounds and jewelry displays. Since then my engagement on photos got so much better! And with time people started telling me that they can tell which photos are mine. I was super happy, because it meant that I've finally found my own style. Today I want to share these easy and creative jewelry photo ideas for your Instagram, Etsy or online shop platforms! So you can experiment and develop your own style for photos too. Enjoy :)

Basia, I'm about to embark on my silver jewellery journey (I'm a fused glass artist in Devon, uk) and came across your CZcams channel this week while searching for beginner's tips in silversmithing. I'm starting a level 1 jewellery course in October in Bude Cornwall and wanted to learn some basics beforehand. You are so generous with your ideas and help (alongside being a complete natural in front of the camera!) and wanted to give a small thank you 😊. Take care, Jo Beespoke of Devon
Hi Jo! Thank you so so much, I really appreciate your support and I'm very happy to hear that my videos and my content can help you on your journey. I'm very excited for you to get started and I'm sure you will enjoy it a lot! Good luck my dear and have fun! 🥰
Thank you. I appreciate it I'm not good at Photography never have been but I'll give it a try!
Honestly, these few things will tremendously improve your photos - 1. Good light (but not direct and not in the sun); 2. lense that allow bokeh effect (blurred background, some smart phones even have this option now); 3. focus on the product and limit other elements in the frame; 4. Try to use tripod or phone/camera holder to limit shaking; 5. Be creative! Experiment and don't stress too much! I sometimes go through my old photos when I first started and I remember being very hard on myself. I've realised that these photos were great! I was unnecessarily overly critical of my photos, while they were perfectly fine :)
Beautiful and creative tutorial! 💖💖💖
Thank you so much 🤗 Happy you enjoyed it!
Great tips! Enjoyed your video!TFS
Very helpful 👍. Thankyou 😊.
Great Video Basia, I wish there was a "love" button as well as a "like". This and all your videos would get a "love" from me. You are very creative with your tips and techniques, and that is truly helpful and generous!

I'm very happy you think so Carolina! Glad you enjoyed watching 🥰❤️
Great ideas. I struggle photographing jewellery, even with my light box. Hardest is bracelets. Oh, and I LOVE your pendant with sleeping cat and amethyst. Your designs are simply gorgeous!
Thank you so much Helen! That's very sweet and I appreciate you watching my video ❤️ I hope it helps! :)
Amazing thank you
You inspire me!!!
Thank you Nikki!
Thanks for the tips.
You're very welcome Shelly! Thank you for watching 🥰
Great ideas Basia! I really really want to improve my photo's, so this was very helpfull. x
Thank you so much Karolien! I'm really happy you enjoyed watching it 🙏
Hiya Karolien, use your body as the model or a friend, as much as you can, photos look best with a human model & get your husband to take the shot of you. Keep the shot as clean, un-cluttered, & simple as possible. Try not to have other jewellery in the frame, even wedding rings, they distract from your work. Try to have the item near the middle of the frame, eyes tend to go there first if there is something light in colour standing out from a darker background. A neckless against a mid to dark coloured high neck top.
I could almost write a short book on this I've read so many books plus my work doing lighting in film & TV.
Stay safe...Steve...
@@stephencoster9532 Thanks 👍🏻☺️

Thank you so much for these tips. I struggle with my photos of my jewelry. Mainly shadows of my phone, tablet and me. Any tips on that?
Wow super👍Very good job 👏👏
Fab, thank you lots!
Excellent, thanks!
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching!
Hi! Thank you for this video! Do you shoot your photos in JPEG or RAW?
Beautiful photos! What camera and lens do you use?
I love you so much!! I’ve learned so much from you. Your jewelry is exquisite!! I even want to talk to you privately. But I think people need to be careful using props with their jewelry. Too much clutter (which is what props can look like if not skilled), or the wrong props or amount or amount of props is a distraction. I don’t think everybody has the same skill level as far as that is concerned, so if you’re advising props, I think you should warn about that. The old expression, “ less is more” works here. Better to have beautiful lighting, clear crisp pictures, gorgeous positioning, cropping etc etc. instead of taking the time to find and position too many props. Yes I’m a jewelry maker and jewelry buyer. I guess it’s the right props that matters as well like the beautiful scissors.
I love bird scissors but does it have to do with selling Jewelry?
Thxx
Basia, thank you very much for this video🙏😁 it's super helpful and very cute)) making interesting photo of my art was big challenge for me. But I practice continuously))) if I have chance -my best way is to make shooting in the nature (forest , sea or park). But you gave me good ideas, thank you. Could you tell me how do you make sparkles on the background? Is it lighter gangland or effect when you editing photos?
Thank you sweetheart! 💖 I used simple fairy lights to get that effect :) These ones were just a copper wire a little lights, but the bigger ones will work too :)
So useful! Thank you for this. May I ask what camera lens yoy usually use for your jewellery photos?
That's wonderful, Fran! So happy you like it 🥰 Thank you 🙏 I shoot mostly with my Canon EOS Rebel T6s and Canon EF 50mm 1.8 lens (edit-typo)
Your work is superb and so inspiring! I learned so much thanks to your channel ! I have a question, what do you do with the scraps after cutting a silver plate?
Thank you so much, I appreciate it a lot! I collect the crap to send it to the company and have it recycled :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Thank you so much for the answer ! I will try to find a company that does this in France 🙂
thanks
Hiya Lady Stardust, yet another great video. I loved the overload of tools, less is more. Did you see on my comment the other day about using your own body to show off the jewellery to it's best effect, people can more easelly see how it might look on them. Your hand yes but also neck, ears & fingers etc. Yes you may need a photographer to take the final shot, or use a model. I've seen a manaquin head fully made up used with the make up colour changed to match the colour of the jewellery, do that on a live model too. Once you've set the style of your jewellery don't do to radical a change. Don't go from 'Country House' to 'Disco'
Stay safe...Steve xx...
Hi Steve! Oh no, I haven'r seen your comment! Will have to go find it and check it out :) But yes, I completely agree, that the best way to show off the jewellery is to simply put it on a model! 😃 The problem is, it's so hard to take the photos of yourself 😂 I might need some help with this. Hopefully over the Summer my sister can help me :) Thank you, take care xx
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Hiya, could a certain Polish gentelman of your aquaintance not help you? You set up the shot with the camera focused on him then you step in & he takes the shot or you do by remote. I can't remember how to spell his name, I never can, spelling again...Can you feed the camera via the computer so you can see the shot while setting up & check focus etc?
As always stay safe you two...Steve xx...
Jarek 😁 Yes, that's true! But sometimes I need to shoot during the day, when there's light, and he's working, so that's not the best. Will try during the weekend, and I will also experiment with setting up a shot via Bluetooth with the new camera (omg, technology these days 🥺😂). Some days I just don't want to photograph myself though 😁
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing experimentation as I recall is the key. They used to say bracket your shots, change the 'f' number & shutter speed, keep the relationship between the two correct for the exposure but turn one up & the other down & shoot. This was in the days when only profesionals had polaroid backs to their cameras & could see the results, we had to wait for the prints to come back from the prossesing house. Now with digital... Look on the largest screen you can to check all is in focus & nothing looks strange. The classic is a tree growing out of someones head. Not likely in this class of work this is close up, but watch out for strange shadoes & reflections.
Enough of the lecture Basia, I looked at your shop page the other day, no strange reflections anywhere... But may I say the photos were all the same, a piece of beautiful original jewellery laid on a flat surface with something around it. Sorry but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind... Stay safe...Stave...
Thanku ♡
You are most welcome! 🥰❤️
What color background is best for silver jewelry
What kind of camera are you using? Your videos are amazing
I'm using Canon Rebel T6S and Sony
Where did you get the hexagon jewelry display?
I found it at a local ceramic/tile shop, they were selling samples for a very low price and these samples are great for displays :)
I had a professional photographer who was once my neighbor and she came over one day and showed me how to do photography but I could never take a photo like her she would shoot just a single blossom of a rose bush if I tried that all I can get is a very fuzzy photo. Thanks for helping us not that aren't that gifted.
Thank you Marty! I think most of the time it's not just being gifted, but the practice and gear. Her being a photographer, she already had years of practice and I'm sure she was using a very good, professional camera too :) So don't be too hard on yourself, it's impossible to be good at everything in life! We only have so much time in a day! I'm glad you found this video helpful 🙏😍
Don't be hard on yourself. Your tools and experience will determine your outcome. Practice practice practice
Can you help me with the order of the fine jewelry that you got the fine Crystal
I'm on the hunt for an art deco jewelry box to show off my jewelry; Unfortunately those are very expensive and the cheap ones are often too damaged;
I know what you mean, sometimes the best option is the original, real deal, but it comes with the cost... I hope you will be able to find a nice one that will be perfect for your photos! Good luck
Hi hun. I notice my cell phone takes better picture then my cannon. Which phone would you recommend take the best photos? Currently I have Samsung note 9 looking into purchasing another phone.
I'm afraid I won't be able to help with this one, sorry! I always used my Canon for photos, rarely the smartphone. CZcams definitely has tons of videos on that, hope you'll find something useful! Good luck 🥰
Hey can you make a video how you made your website
I haven't made it, I'm using Shopify :)
Hello...wait desperately for your video
Thank you 😁
I have a personal request for you, if you let me..Do you follow the trail of the witches? I don't remember if I have already asked you too, but I often see pagan and witch-themed jewelry that you have made, so I'm curious, because in reality I am too.😊
Could you try making jwellery video plz 😊
What do you mean? 😀
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing I mean like you have made the video about capturing images of jwellery ..would like to see a video instead of still images .Like the way we see in advertisements .. 😊😊
@@glimmerista1830 ah, sure! Check out my channel, there's many videos like this! :)
It might sound funny, cuz I can take professional looking photos, sharp and looking like on jewelry shop websites or catalogs. But it uses plain background, black, white, red, grey, nothing fancy, just focusing on jewelry to stand out. But when it comes to Instagram pictures and using composition with household items, I feel I'm not that creative to come up with any ideas 😂 But in my eyes, people rather buy products that were photographed in natural light, lifestyle props, rather than overly professional looking that may make them feel like it won't look the same when they do buy it, so my sales have been pretty poor.
