  • In this video Peter McLeod gives his first thoughts on the new Hardy Zane Carbon fly reel. This latest saltwater specific fly reel from Hardys replaces the popular SDSL range and brings a wealth of upgrades along with some dynamic design features using carbon fibre to cut weight. The Zane Carbon is a lightweight, large arbour sealed disc drag reel capable of handling anything that’s thrown at it. It's perfectly at home taming bonefish, predators, salmon or sea trout in its smaller sizes, to permit and tarpon in the 10,000 and 12,000 sizes.

    Solid review. I purchased the same reel (8000) for my trip to the Bahamas in April. It will also be on my 9wt. I’m really excited to try it out. Let us know how it does on your trip in March.

    Hello, what would you recommend Hardy Ultralite SDSL 8000 or Hardy Zane Carbon 8000. Are you satisfied with both roles? Best regards

      Having used both the Carbon Zane is a better reel with a better drag. The SDSL is a great budget reel for saltwater, but the Carbon Zane is a cut above….

    hello , sorry if I'm off topic , I saw that there are 12000 hardy fortuna Z on sale . Do you have any experience with this model? can you tell me if for a 12wf is too big ?

      Hi there, no worries, I have a Fortuna Z and they are great reels. They were a limited edition version so have excellent anodising. The sizing is a little confusing, but to give you an idea I normally use the 10000 Fortuna XDS for 11 and 12#, the 12000 is the biggest one they made and would normally take a 13 or 14# line with 500 yards of backing. It is more of an offshore/ sailfish reel. You could certainly use it for 12#, but it’s going to feel big…

      , thanks for the accurate answer, always follows your videos, especially on GTs (maybe sooner or later ...), always very technical.

    Where’s the lab test?
    Edit: I should have waited for the last bits of the video with that comment.

    Hi, I looked at this reel wanting to buy. I went to Edinburgh Anling centre looked at the 9/10 the 1 in store was stiff on the forward wind with a tighter spot at one point. no matter where the clutch was set to. When holding the reel in hand and winding the run off between the spool edge and reel base edge was really bad like a buckled bicycle wheel. The thighter the cutch the worse it got. The store guy who was really good said that he would send it back there was an obvious fault . But order another from the Glasgow store. That was marginally better with rgds to the run off but did not have a thight spot. He orderd another, Thats 3 reels in total It was the same as the second. I had a refund issued just today. I will look at something else. There is a manufacturing fault at play here. Such a shame as everything about this reel ticks all the boxes for me. Just to add the largest model I tried in store was buttery smooth and almost 0 run off/buckle when winding. Can you give any info on this? Is this problem widespread

      Hi Scott, very sorry to hear that, I just set up 7 of them given to me by clients bought in different places in 8/9/10 and 10/11/12 to go the Seychelles and had no issues at all, so I can only assume that it was a bad batch they had? Real shame, but no, have not heard anything from anyone else at this point…

      @@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing Thanks for the reply,thats good to know,It looks like there has just been a bad batch produced then. I tried to purchase from Active angling based in Stirling also. They had one 9/10 in stock but it was the same. They also said they would be returning it.I think I will wait for there replacment stock and try again.

      Honestly? A £400 reel and it's a....." bad batch "......jeezaloo. I think that should tell you something.

    So where is this reel manufactured?
    You call it carbon.....is that not just a plastic composite?

    • @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing
      @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the comment Lee, it’s made in Korea, and yes, it’s carbon fibre… a plastic composite would not support the structure… out of curiosity, why do you want to know where it’s made?

    • @leerichy6489
      @leerichy6489 Před 2 lety

      @@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing I've seen an awful lot of reels over the years claiming to be carbon fibre construction....going back decades. I think it would be helpful if you could explain exactly how the carbon is incorporated in the build. I know technology makes carbon products, even plastics, that are far stronger than steel in some ways.
      Why do I want to know where it is made.......out of curiosity 😉
