5:27 Fun Fact: Janet Aulisio only illustrated four cards in Magic: The Gathering, all of them in 1997 Tempest. Her artwork depicting Volrath on Helm of Possession is so amazing.
Great call on Hero of Bretagard - that card would be a powerhouse in so many decks and I never paid attention to it because it was a quiet rare from a quiet commander deck.
I run Heartless Summoning in my Garna, the Bloodflame deck. There are some combos in the deck that are enabled by reducing the cost of creatures, and various loops it can add iterations to, even if it isn't infinite yet. Definitely a cool component of that deck.
Key piece in my Acererak deck, reduces his casting cost to just 💀. With Carnival of Souls and a 'cast a black spell gain a life' artifact / enchantment you infinitely enter the dungeon. He's become a kill player on sight when I pull the deck out 😕
I have loved Herald of Leshrac since the days of Cold Snap, I had a big brain thought as you were going over it. Oubliette would be the perfect card to turn this off. Oubliette'ing your own HoL so you don't lose the lands. Also I have been playing Hibernation's End since Cold Snap as well. Love it in Jorn right now. You may have to pay the Upkeep but Jorn makes it so it really doesn't matter. Got it to seven a few weeks back to get my favorite Rimefeather Owl.
@@RubrDuky1 Cumulative Upkeep takes up your mana but Jorn untaps all snow permanents when he attacks including your snow lands (or snow rocks). Mitigating the cost in a way.
So here's a funny think to note about Leshrac. It has a few card combos with stuff that return cards to their owner, so you can permanently get around the cumulative upkeep. This is important to note, because if you can't pay the upkeep it sac's itself(if you can't snatch the required amount of lands). You mix this with a Aristocrats Mardu deck like Alesha for some added value and then do something like aggressive mining to fill the graves.
Honestly as a spikey player your content really does encourage me to start tuning my decks back down to the casual level cuz lots of these cards are super fun
I used to run Head Games in my Sen Triplets deck to get whatever I wanted to cast from my opponent's hand, but 5 mana at sorcery speed often didn't leave me with too much left to cast their spells. Behold the solution to this problem: Jester's Mask Effectively only paying 1 generic mana on my turn for the same effect works a lot better for what I'm trying to do, and being an artifact it has more synergy with the other cards in my deck! Also, Heartseeker is brutal with Syr Gwyn.
I just bought the cards for a Fijara deck Im building and heartless summoning is one of my favorite cards I found for it and then I see it here. You really are informing us of some good cards.
I have Hidden Guerrillas in my Sythis deck. The first time I played it turn 1 and then after someones Sol Ring hit, I added Rancor and attacked for 7 turn 2 they were like WTF??🤣
I have Heartless Summoning in my Muldrotha deck, and it’s fantastic. It makes perilous myr amazing. It turns wood elves into one-mana ramp. There are so many cool combos
I have run heartless summoning in my Ur dragon deck for years now and it’s amazing! Often it’s a free drop since it pays for itself if you want to play a dragon the same turn it comes out!
Hibernation's end is super fun. Running it in an elf tribal deck that has a nice spread of cmcs. It's neat to get to essentially tutor something up every turn and cheat it out at cost.
3:50 Halvar doesn't always help here. It just moves equipped equipment, it cannot attach the first time. You would need one of those creatures that can equip for free for the ability to be helpful
Yep, I have heartless summoning in my Ur-Dragon deck. It works wonders when it hits the field. You think it might hurt, but when you add Ur-Dragon's own effect into the mix its really just letting you play big beefy creatures turns before you should be able to.
I just built my 1st ever edh deck. I picked gitrog monster as my commander. I play herald also.. then sac the lands to the frog Edit: Aah funny I bought a heartless summons for it too. I had no idea it wasn't a commander played card. I never played before building and that was recent
I see you're a man of culture as well. Have you also tried "Carnival of Souls", "Burnt Offering" and "Desecrated Tomb"? Grenzo is just a wonderful commander to build around, there's so many possibilities that i couldn't restrain myself and i ended up building 3 Grenzo decks: one for baseline power 2 or less (goblin tribal), one for baseline power 4 or less (reanimator/anything goes) and a Relentless Rats one! (because why not?). Yeah, i'm a freak. lol
I run Hibernation’s End in my streamlined Ghalta deck. First I am either getting a deathtouch creature or a mana dork. Second: Avatar of the resolute or Lupine Prototype (only if I need help casting Ghalta) Third: Wayward Sabertooth (or so many other good choices) Fourth: Ripjaw Raptor Fifth: Elder Gargoth is definitely an option Sixth: Vigor (or Regal Behemoth. If I have both, I just skip paying the upkeep early). I know this seems expensive, but: -I would want to play these anyway and since I am casting them from library it is even better than drawing an extra card each turn as it is tutoring a card of my choice. -Planar Bridge can do the same thing but better, but it also costs 8 each activation. This is MUCH more manageable.
I think Master Thief is playable in EDH for the same reason Hidden Guerillas is, reliable artifacts. Monoblue artifact removal with a twist, it's definetly a pet card of mine and sees play in my mono blue and blink decks. Who doesn't want two Sol Rings? Especially if you got to steal one from someone else? Want a different artifact instead? Just blink him. Need a big creature? Steal someone else's equipment and attach it to Master Thief, or better yet, steal someone elses big artifact creature. Definetly a slept on card imo.
Herald of Leshrac has been a staple in my 'Grenzo, Dungeon Warden' EDH decks for a really long time, and although his abilities makes some people salty with ease, he already won me games out of the blue since it's very hard to respond to him in the early stages of the game.
LMAO I do indeed use Heartless summoning in my Ur Dragon deck Herald of Leshrac is one of those cards you do a double take on, wow never noticed it wasn't legendary till now :)
A number of cards that have become recently very important: Despotic Scepter, Nightmare Unmaking, Viridian Revel (I think you've mentioned this one before)
Was really thinking of making Kemba, and Heartseeker is now being heavily considered. Another card to weaponize the tokens, especially with Puresteel Paladin in play.
Helm of Possession is so good, it's kind of like a Vedalken Shackles that any color deck can run. Speaking of which, I haven't seen Vedalken Shackles in a long time. Getting a copy of Helm in play is just such a gross way to grind your opponent's creatures down.
Heart warden seems like an amazing card that no one plays. Sure you have llanowar elves and findhorn elves sure, but it’s one extra mana for removal hate.
I've seen Heartless Summoning pop up a lot in Acererak decks. Which makes sense - 1 black to journey into the Dungeon. Combine that with a few other cards and you have degenerate combos. Also, I played Helm of Possession in my first deck - Endrek Sahr. Such a good card in that deck.
I have Heartless Summoning in my Garth one eye tie the game deck. Teysa orzhov Scion, darkest hour, and heartless summoning just make infinite 1/1s that die instantly and make another 1/1 that dies instantly and repeat ad infinitum
Herald of leshrac is a honorary legend in my big mana legendary tribal jodah deck, also he's one of two honorary legends, the other being bringer of the black dawn.
Herald is actually pretty bad when loading it with extra counters because it will quickly become impossible to pay the upkeep cost which will mean you lose all the lands you've taken.
The point is that it temporarily deny's mana to your opponents, and ramps you. It becomes an immediate target for removal (which can protect your other stuff), and just becomes a great obstacle
I'd say for the first couple counters it's great, because stealing the first 6 lands in 3 turns isn't very good when everyone already has at least 10 lands each.
This video was great to watch, also had a question for anyone willing to answer, i want to make a tibalt cosmic imposter deck but it seems a bit difficult to build around since his cmc is so high and rakdos isnt the best at ramping does anyone have a tibalt deck that they could share and or give me pointers on what to put into the deck to make it a bit faster with getting him out
@@edhdeckbuilding oh yeah I know, I meant in tandem with some discard hand spell. Search their library for all their best permanents then make them discard their hand and get them all

I swear by Heartless Summoning and my pod was amazed when I showed it off since black is by far the most popular color at my table
So here's a funny think to note about Leshrac. It has a few card combos with stuff that return cards to their owner, so you can permanently get around the cumulative upkeep. That's actually very clever. Never realized his power was low enough for Grenzo's baseline.

I completely slept on Hero of Bretagard. She works perfect in my Heliod life-gain deck. Archangel of Thune now has a new buddy.
Fully agree on Heart Warden. Great mana dork. Have it in my Yedora deck
In a Tergrid deck, Head Games is basically just tutoring using your opponent's library.
