That is the quickest way to check. In South Africa they were faking a 2005 to look like the 2003 as the value of the genuine 2003 was much higher and worth the ZAR25k to buy the parts. At that time tank badges were ZAR3500 a pair. 2 years ago they were selling for ZAR19k so they no longer create new fakes but there are a lot out there. Value here is based on originality. This one is genuine but has lost about ZAR40k in value because of the exhaust, handgrips and a number of other none standard items. I have screaming Eagle pipes which is approved so retains the value. Everything else is stock standard
One thing to note, the anniversary is not for the sportster 100 year it is for Harley Davidson 100 year. Harley was founded in 1903 in Milwaukee. The emblem on the tank shows those years. So looking for a 2007 Sportster would not land you an anniversary edition. They made these in 2003 for many different models, not just the sportster.
@@YouMotorcycle Ah, I see that now. The title is a little misleading. It actually caused me to question the legitimacy of my 03’ anniversary because there are so many differences in the 100th to 50th anniversary models.

That's not mine though. Mine was a 2007 that a pastor was trying to pass off as a 50th anniversary edition. They did make 50th anniversary edition sportsters, but mine was not one of them, he just bought a trim piece to tell people it was.
I have a 2003 Sportster XL1200S 100th anniversary edition and it does not have the chrome engine or transfer case nor does it have the special ribbon tape paint. But it is the rare pearl white Sportster Sport model.

I'll keep looking, but I think the battery box cover might just be a stick on medallion, I've only seen one other 03 sportster with a medallioned battery box cover.
I would go in person with your VIN# to the parts department at a Harley dealer and see what they can help you with. I'm sure they'll tell you a bunch (maybe even all) of the missing parts will be discontinued, but in my experience, when they can't sell it to you they're cool with giving you the part number so you can try to find it used yourself... No, not all 2003 Sportsters are 100th Anniversary Editions. Likewise, not all 2007 Sportsters are 50th Anniversary Editions. And I didn't necessarily care for an anniversary edition Sportster myself, but I still wasn't happy when I found out that I was lied to. Most importantly though, regardless of whether or not a bike is worth more or less, people should be treated fairly and they should have access to information to help them decide what they are or aren't getting in a deal, and that's what this video is designed to do.
@@YouMotorcycle I have this 03 also. Your battery cover is an add on. Original battery has embossed area filled with a metal decal. Battery is black molded plastic. Dead giveaway on engine is an Anniversary logo on left side by the serial number pad that has raised casting around it. ONLY '03 cases had this as all new molds were used in '04. I see yours has it. The "third" color you speak of is I believe is the striping between the black and silver colors. It is actually made up of "HARLEY-DAVIDSON" microprinted on pinstriping decal in a crosshatch pattern. I was told by my dealer (bought new) that only 1200 engines were chromed and only on two tone silver and black ones. Hope I come off as trying to be helpful and not as an ass.
The reason this will have value is guys saying it doesn't or isn't going to have value and get rid of them. 20 years from now when you see peple looking for them and the value is more then the not anniversary Addison you'll be saying I wish I would of kept mine . Lol that's the thing with old stuff what will hold its value . These bikes will have value because guys sell them because everyone had one the year they came out . There will be value in a original 100th anniversary bike that's original. The air cleaner for sure everyone puts s&s cleaners on and loose the original . For instance the metric bike from the 70s value the parts . Everyone threw them out and only saved harley stuff. It will cost you more for a original Honda tank then harley

Your story telling doesn't jive you were buying an 07 & started to bash the minister not that i give a damn but either way people went crazy thinking they were investing in a once in a lifetime 100th year special edition no matter the model for 03 but the market was flooded to a worthless long term value owning one. It will not gain in value it will be worth what market value is & that's all it is !! Enjoy the ride for what joy it brings you, but don't expect it will go up in value , that is unless you keep it in pristine condition for the next 40/50 years you will no doubt sell at a profit then.
@@davenorris3435 very cool, I'm glad you shared this, thank you!
So, all this video could be 10 sec long just to advise people to check VIN number as bikes can have aftermarket parts and custom paint jobs. And before you guys huff and puff regarding the pastor, it was inappropriate to say that. Not cool bro!
Inappropriate to say what? That he intentionally misled the student he was selling to? That's the truth.
