I spent 11 months arming these E models with every kind of conventional weapon in the Air Force inventory at Clark AFB, Philippines in 1976. I always loved being at the end of the runway pulling the arming pins and watching them take off. The thunder from these engines cannot be captured properly, nor the feeling of being shook by them by watching a video. This was an amazing aircraft then, and could still hold its own against any aggressor today, don't doubt it. Unfortunately, she is a relic of the past and so am I. Fortunately, there are two F4E's on static display in two locations in my area I go visit once in awhile just to remember what it was like to be around this magnificent machine.
The only thing at the time that was more impressive to watch take off was the Blackbird when it stopped by every now and again.
    Ahh, the memories.......

The F-4 AUP Phantom II is a beautiful aircraft, I want it to remain operational for many decades to come, and never need to be replaced unnecessarily.

I live in Vermont (USA) and I remember F-4s being stationed in Burlington at the Air National Guard . The Air Base actually shares the Burlington International Airport . After the F-4s left , F-16s followed and currently F35s are stationed There after the F-16s departed. I remember the awesome sound of the F-4s as they flew over my Home Town . For such a heavy Aircraft, the maneuverability was most impressive.

The F-4 Phantom is my favorite jet. It's had an enviable combat record.
I know a few retired F-4 pilots and the stories they tell are great. The books the retired Phantom drivers write are mind-blowing.
These are my 3 favorite aviation books:
    - Topgun by Dan Pederson
    - F-4 Phantom: A Pilot's Story by Robert Prest
    - Scream of Eagles by Robert Wilcox
    - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

My favorite airplane. Used to go out to the DaNang Air Base in l969 and watch them land & takeoff with the afterburners going. What sound and fury! They'd climb very steeply after going airborne and that was a thrill to watch too.
Too bad the sound doesn't give you the real experience of the takeoff. But I appreciate Sidewinder for putting the video on and bringing back the memories. Thanks!

I'm also a big fan of the F-4. At about the same time I was stationed at a base that was loaded with F-4s. I loved watching those takeoffs at night.

The remaining Greek Phantoms exist not just for the sake of numbers, but they can do things in today's warfare -and you have to consider the armament of the Turkish Air Force which is not that more modern-. First, in 1999 all air frames underwent through the SLEP (Service Life Extension Program) that with replacement of all wiring, pumps and spars of the wing prolonged their available flight hours. Then, in 2002, 36 of them upgraded to the F-4E PEACE ICARUS 2000 program, or AUP (Avionics Upgrade Program) In the planes were installed new radar, the F/A-18's AN/APG-65 GR, HUD, HOTAS, digital color monitor screens on the cockpit, new GPS/INS, new digital navigation and mission computers, improved IFF interrogator and RWR, altimeter radar, Litening precision targeting pod and other minor improvements. In result the F-4 AUP can operate AIM-120, every new edition of Aim-9, new generation GBU's the AGM-65G Maverick and AFDS dispenser. It is also capable of firing AIM-2000 (IRIS-T). All these turned the F-4 in a "poor man's F-15E" with substantial capabilities especially in the BVR fight, since in our days close range dogfights are rare. No other fighter in H.A.F. can operate with 4 Aim-9 and 4 AIM-120. Of course, in order for them to operate they do it not alone, but in collaboration with more modern fighters in complicated mission scenarios. So they are not in their prime, but they are still useful. Nowadays, no more than 16 are still operational and they will continue to fly up until 2025-27 to fill for the gap of F-16 52+ adv that they will partially be removed from fighting squadrons in order to be upgraded to Vipers and to wait for the conclusion of the deliveries of the 24 Rafale F3R.

you got my attention. There were so many great aircraft. BTW, the F4 and B58 had the same engines. B58 was my favorite bomber, F4 was the greatest until that F14 showed up. B1 was a great bomber after the B58. STILL great aircraft. SOMETHING FUNNY: I was watching a documentary and they discussed the B58 as an aircraft with no range. The quote was, a great bomber if you wanted to bomb CANADA, LOL.

They are. Its something to do with the delta wing configuration, where full back stick gets the nose unstuck in the quickest time/shortest distance.

@@get2dachoppa249 I'm a straight wing guy and was always taught that the extra elevator drag would only lengthen the takeoff roll up to Vr.

I had the pleasure to work in an F-14
Tomcat squadron. However, as you look around you see other beautiful machines the U.S. Government has
& you start to think why you didn't go there, or, there, or there, so on & so
    forth.
The F-4 Phantom, CH-53 Stallion & Super Stallion, or, the C-130 Hercules are other Beautiful machines I'd appreciate to be associated with.
Still, the F-14 Tomcat is not a. bad
duty selection. It's about as close I
ever come to an NHRA crew & put my hands on it.
    Be safe.
