Is This The Most UNDERRATED Casio Ever?

- In this Casio MTD-1053D review video, I analyze this viable 40mm Casio Duro dive watch alternative to see if this is the smaller diver we've been waiting for. After the failure of the MDV-10, the downsized MDV-106, is this the timepiece to fill the void? In this Casio MTD 1053 review, I'll be considering size, water resistance, construction, and a collection of other factors to see if it's any good.

Finally! My beloved sea watch gets a review from a big channel like yours! 2 summers in a row with 70 snorkelling sessions each summer and the watch delivers on it's water capabilities. I have it on a nato as i didn't like the bracelet and it looks even better. This model sells more than the duro here in greece as it is 30% cheaper and much better proportioned. Best vfm real diver you can get hands down. Glad you made a review Ben, i spammed you about this model 3 or four times and you reviewing it means a lot to me as a subscriber!
amazing looking at your channel discovering it now and casually wearing this exact rare piece. i love it
Thank you for your insight Ben. I've been contemplating one of these for quite some time but now you've convinced me to pull the trigger.
I think one (or both..) will look good next to my clowder(?) of Duros😋
Finally a watch CZcamsr covering the 1053☺️.
As you mentioned it is a really good alternative to the Duro ,especially in some regions which the Duro isn't available ,like my country for example.
I'm using the blue version as a daily for the last 3 years (which btw Casio was right about the battery it lasted exactly 3 years). It has been beaten and scratched due to the nature of my work (industrial ) but it has never failed me and the lume still lasts all night even with some overcast.
The bracelet is the Achilles heel of that watch as you pointed out, the links after 2years became a little loose and the adjustment isn't that great although a simple link removal tool makes the job super easy
For 50€ I really can't complain, most reliable watch I have possesed so far highly recommend it.
I used to own a 1st gen MDV-102 and I was kinda surprised of not hearing any reviews about it , as predecessor of the Duro, nor any reviews about this one. IMO these two are much better looking and versatile than the Duro due to their size .
Great video, Ben!
I got one of these three or four years ago. I’ve kept it on the original bracelet which is indeed not bad. The black bezel insert picked up scratches , I think it’s just plastic but apart from that it’s held up well. A very good watch.
Edit: The bezel insert isn’t plastic but metal and upon checking it’s only got a few very minor scratches- doh!
NB The bezel action on mine isn’t tinny - it’s crisp and precise with no backplay.
I had been having this watches for a year or so, and now one of my friends wears them. They are great! 👍
Sometimes I put red NATO strap on them for a fun look 😊
I've had a 1053 several months, the blue dial variant & the sunray dial really pops in the the sunlight & the red minute markers to the 15 on the bezel are a real contrast. OK the bracelet is a bit jangly & only 2 micro adjusts does make it tricky to get a perfect fit year round. The value for money is spot on and it offers a different look to the standard array of 200m divers in the budget bracket. I've also got the automatic version of the Invicta Pro Diver but the Casio 1053 gets lots more wrist time than the Invicta, it's a watch that's under the radar in my opinion.
maybe because now all want a Big Ben Size Watch on wrist !!!! even little 7" wrist loooool... personally i own It.. and i love it in despite of my 9 inches elephant wrists. (i love my MDV 107 too... lol)
I have a MTD-1053 and I absolutely love it! A real hidden gem! The bracelet articulation is the best I’ve seen on any Casio including my more expensive Edifice EQB-1000.
I wore it as my work watch and it was brilliant! The reason I no longer wear it at work is that the lack of micro adjustment on the clasp meaning I can’t seem to get that “Goldie Locks” fit, particularly in summer. The other issue I had is that I have to wear shaded protective eyewear at work and due to the comparatively small hands on the 1053 I couldn’t get a good read of the time without taking my glasses off 👨🏻🏭 I’ve switched to a Casio MTP-VD02D which has a much larger handset so it works much better for me despite the chrome plated resin case and the far inferior bracelet when compared to the 1053.
Sekonda did once produce a decent diver under the 'ONE by Sekonda' brand. 200M depth rating, 316L steel, solid links, decent bezel and lume.
They don't seem to do anything comparable these days but mine's still going strong and yes, I did used to wear it whilst diving.
Ben!! I've noticed how your hands are full of cuts and dry skin spots. Take care mate and I hope you'll heal soon! Thanks to you I'm wearing a Casio Lineage LCW-M170 and absolutely love it!
Really interesting find, Ben. I like the numerals, reminds me of a Longines Hydroconquest or something.
For now I'm sticking with my Duro, and my Citizen Challenge. But it's good to see alternatives.
wow it looks great! the folded links are expected and look totally acceptable
I received my Duro 14 days ago and this thing just put a spell on my. I just can't take it off. Both Casio alternatives you showed here are great, but they lack Duro simplicity and refinement that I strongly like. Even my Orient Kamasu 2 sits in the box for days!
I love this watch! I've had it in my collection for a couple of years. Really great watch. I have it in black and now I kind of want a blue one as well lol.
I think the reason this model hasn't received more attention is because it is... How should I say it... An acquired taste to say the least.
Seriously, a simpler design would be easier to manufacture and sell massively
I can see the sportier design appealing to people, but it loses out on the versatility of the Duro.
33mm and 37mm Citizen Promaster gets NO love. It’s been in front of us the whole time
Just plain fugly.
I actually prefer the 1053 - I find it a more interesting look than the somewhat me-too Duro.
I purchased the black version back in 2017 or 2018 it's a really good watch for the price I paid for it back then at around £49 in a sale. Perfect for my small size wrist. I purchased the blue version also for around the same price and the sunburst dial is a very nice touch to the watch. Good battery life also which in my experience has been around 3 years. Both really good watches at a reasonable price.
I’ve just purchased this watch and changed over the bracelet for a strap.I work in construction and needed something robust without splashing the cash this is absolutely perfect working for me.
About time this watch got some attention. The MTD-1053 is fantastic! I have the blue and black versions. Its the perfect size and also has all the features I want.
This watch used to be known as Casio Marlin MDV101, one of many Marlin series watches in the early 2000's. After they lost their right for the Marlin logo, they rebranded it under different names.
Several other Marlin watches also received the same fate such as:
MDV-700 = AMW-710 (with less water resist; 10 bar)
MDV-102 = MTD-1048 (also 10bar WR)
Also, certain model like MDV-701 has tide graph, moon phase, world time, thermometer function & auto EL backlight! Casio used to put all out into their Marlin watches.
great comment, I have the mdv 700 and mdv 102 in my collection and they are great watches, the new versions without the marlin logo are not that great but you still can get those at decent prices, this is useful in case you own an old marlin and you need to get a compatible replacement module or parts
There's also the MDV-101 which is the same watch but with the iconic Marlin of the MDV-106, very rare and beautiful watch.
Check out the Edifice EFV-130D. I have the white one, that's a good substitute for the discontinued white Duro. It's also slightly smaller than the Duro
I recently bought a Casio MDV-107,Has the similar function and look of the Duro.
Love that watch what a beast I have the duro and would love to get this on wrist
Wonder if it can take an oil fill to bring out the dial. Some movements are not strong enough to be oil filled. If it is, it would enhance the overall look.
Hi Ben! Did you saw new casio a1100? Looks so vintage and made of steel. Will you make a review of this model?
The big duro succeeds because its not bling like the others. Just a hard tool watch that does exactly what it says on the packet.
It would be the most underrated Casio ever if it used either a tough solar module or the module 2719 aka Miyota 2S60 where the battery is CR2012 that lasts for 10 years minimum (and yes, you could fit a CR2016 there if you're careful enough). On a 3-year SR battery, it's a bummer.
Helloo Ben, are you going to review budget g-shocks anytime soon?
I bought this same watch just a week ago. Very nice watch, except the bracelet which is of poor quality. Is it possible to swap the bracelet on this watch to a jubilee?
Would love to see a Sekonda review!
I got these around 13 years ago, still wear them sometimes. Too bad, they are cost like 3 times more than before, at least in my area 😅
you should review the casio ef-121d
You can buy the MTD in both colors in Germany directly from Casio for 70 € + shipping. The dial is a bit disproportional compared to the big bezel and this "ring" on the dial makes it optical smaller as it is. I like the blanc pain design. But I never would consider the MTD as a "hommage" but of course the Spinnaker Fleuss. In order to compete with a Duro I think the MTP would be the better choice although it has a fixed bezel. Having said this I don´t know a good alternative to my black and gold Duro.
Very similar to the Japanese market MDV100 though this has a stainless steel bezel. I got mine on eBay for £60 before the 2021 VAT and inflation took effect.
Ben, the blue version appears to be cheaper on Amazon today.
About time that someone speak about thee watch 😅
Hi ben, i love your video but can you review the Casio MTP-RS105D-7BVDF Solar Powered too? i think it's interesting solar powered watch under $100
I have the original duro, I like the size. Hope your feeling well. If not , please take care.
What are you thoughts on the casio watch mtd 125 2av
I've got one on ebay, a white dial but they're discontinued and usually jdm, mine has the marlin logo too
Just got the blue ktd1053d, what a beautiful watch. Now if someone reviewing this watch could show us how to do the links i'd be most appreciative.
Wish it had a bigger, longer lasting battery. There is plenty more room for a battery inside the case.
You can hide drugs inside 🥳🥳🥳
I will persevere with the super size Duro for the moment. However that model on a quality rubber or sailcloth would vastly improve the fit, wear and look IMHO. Yeah okay so that adds money to the package but would surely be worth it?
im just waiting for a 39mm orient ray/mako/kamasu release. fingers crossed
I believe you have something here! Good looking watch!
I actually like it better than the Duro.
You should check out the MDV-107D series, they are exactly like the duro but without the marlin symbol, I've got the Batman in this series and believe me its beautiful
I bought this exact watch a few months ago & put it on a "Thunderball" Bond NATO strap. It is amazing looking!!! I rarely go back to my Duro
Love my Duro.
I love my Duro but I'm also rather fond of this one, it does pop more in the Blue, I also have had troubles getting a good fit, its always a bit loose and its no lightweight so does tend to flop around a bit on the wrist, but for the £50 ish I paid I have no complaints.. You say Blancpain I reckon more Breitling Super Ocean but whatever, thanks for giving this Watch a bit of well deserved and overdue exposure ...👍
I have the blue and black variants. Just as good as the duro yet smaller
I'm happy this little guy finally gets sole attention. There are apparently a world of MTPs and MDVs that seem to be sold mostly in Russia...
FairPlay for calling your arms ‘tiny’ after rudely referring to mine as enormous 😂
How obout fossil fs5994 ( grey) ? I need a opinion
The Quartz Invicta pro Diver says it has 200m WR but it doesn't. Mine leaked in a regular swimming pool. It doesn't have a screw down crown. It's very disappointing.
Closely resembles my Orient Mako II. 6 9 12 numerals, hands, bezel layout and red tipped second hand.
Duro indices aren't applied though. They are pressed in from the back of the dial.
I reckon this more dominating style is going to take hold as the 2000s make a stylistic comeback. Seeing Oakley and baggy jeans coming back, so I'll expect chunkier watches in the mix. G-Shock was by accident ahead of that game
I like it. Better than the smaller gelded Duro.
I ended up replacing my duro with an invicta pro diver. I scored a titanium automatic for $76 CAD. You are correct about the unsightly invicta branding on the watch case, but otherwise an excellent low cost purchase.
…that horrible back of a seconds hand too
@@goodnota it grew on me.
Here in USA, Walmart has a deal I could not resist! I totally love my ridiculously cheap Invicta 9204 for USD 32.99 (NOT the "OB' model, just the plain 9204, difference being scalloped bezel vs "coin" edge). It is dainty at 37.5mm case diameter, and at 115 grams with band feels much lighter than my automatic Invicta 8926OB and 8928, which are both roughly 150 grams, depending on how many links you remove. The quartz movement makes it as good at time keeping, as any Rolex, so why would anybody spend 2 brand new cars' worth of money on a Rolex, when you can have the Invicta for the price of less than 2 lunches at a hamburger, fish and chips, or bratwurst kiosk?
Got one in blue 6 months ago almost half price the Duro. Changed the bracelet to a silicone as the original metal was s....
Very good watch at this price point, but not a big fan of the esthetic. But it's just me.
Thanks for sharing 👍
3:33 "With an ISO certification.." What? where did you get that info? What dive watch with ISO certification does not say "Diver's" on the dial? Did you jist make this up?
Best VFM casio diver watch , was the ULTIMATE MDV-102...style and practicality!!
That looks great, on a rubber strap it would do the job very well 👍
You stated that the unit has ISO certified water resistance to 200m. Of course that's ISO22810, according to the spec sheet, which references "general" water resistance for all watches.
Usually when one mentions ISO certification for a diver, they mean ISO 6425, which requires depth testing to 125% rated depth for at least two hours, OF EACH PIECE. ISO 22810 does not have such requirements and allows "type testing" to be performed. (translation: your individual watch more likely than not never got tested).
Yes, we're talking about a Casio for less than a Benjamin, but I bristle at the idea that people intermingle "divers" with "dive watches". While these Casio "divers" sure look the part, if I need to go to depth during a dive, there's only one watch in my collection I'm taking with me. My ISO 6425 Diver's certified Citizen.
I had to look this up when Ben mentioned ISO certified. So it seems the 200m rated watches are batch tested to a different standard. Interesting that every 6425 diver's watch are individually tested. I knew that happened with my Helm Vanuatu as I have the certificate but didn't realise that my promasters were subject to the same procedures.
You're right Duro offers nothing to me but does get a lot of exposure. This one would be much easier to live with.
LCW M170 titanium. That's my choice forever. Amazing.
That would look sharp on a black strap with red stitching.
New sub here. I saw some replicas of these watches here and they looked very like original.😂❤
Got it love it! nato strap on it and done.
I like it - added it to Santa's list!
Hey @benswatchclub how do I stay up to date with casio releases, they release so many good watches and I find it hard to keep up to date and where to buy these. Would make a good video and not much online about this.
nice watch
You cant realy call Sekonda a fashion brand, more an unfashionable brand but they have one or two half decent dive style watches if you're on a budget. I just picked one up that has a bright orange dial with a rubber strap and its pretty neat TBH
Golly I love Casio.
The other bright side about this watch is that due to it being a Duro, it should be faring better than automatics of the same age due to the fact that it uses quartz. Another issue is the automatic reliance on escapementa and how this is a factor for wear. As much respect I have for the likes of Seiko's SNK809, the issue it has is the fact that Seiko has discontinued the 7S26 movements to make room for the "newer" 4R36 which means that if your older Seiko breaks, getting it fixed or replaced is going to be harder to do so compared to newer Seiko watches due to Seiko no longer making the movements you can replace the broken movements with.
Quartz on the other hand has less wear to worry about, but its not exactly immune to issues, theres still situations like battery leakage.
But the Duro battery is tiny and needs replacement often.
Belle montre super
It’s like a quartz Orient Mako tbh. Though much more… industrial.
Casio 1053 is perfect. i have chance . bracelet is perfect for my Wrist (no need Added or remove link) often i prefer rubber because its more adapted for close of 9 inches Perimeter.. but. here.. its perfect.. watch look not ridiculous even if my full size Mdv 107 is more in actual standart for big wrists.
Casio MTD-1004 , Great Watch For Small Wrests .
Watch CZcamsr:
*stumbles across random casio*
“tHis Is ThE mOsT uNdErRaTeD wAtCh EvEr”
I have this watch and ngl best watch i ever payed for stylish and u can swim with it
Pagani are greats too... i own 2 . never issues.
You know what, I like it and if it’s not your cup of tea get an Invicta prodiver. You’d be surprised.
In France, both colors are the same price of 46€.
The markers in Duro are not applied. They are pressed.
I have seen the newest version of the Duro MDV107 without the Fish Logo (no consensus if that was a Marlin or Swordfish) has applied indices. There is a Spanish language video showing one disassembled.
@@davids.8459 Got it. I've never disassembled it, just going by what I heard on the interwebz.
Looks like as if Longines Conquest had a child with a Duro, but then ended up with birth defects and ended up being quartz
The 1053 started as a Duro model anyway.
Great content.
All the noise about 200 m is overrated in my opinion. The average person isn't diving that deep.
It isn't about diving. CASIO rates the 100m watches for swimming but also rates their 200m watches for high impact water sports such as jet skiing or even crazy sofa etc. If you only swim you're fine with 100m, if you want to be sure on all occasions you need 200m.
Can't go wrong with an Accurist diver
rare Casio's are definitely a goldmine
Any Dive watch solar with led backlight? Man For the life of me I can't find any, I believe they don't exist.
casio duro mtd-1052 must be the closest thing you're looking for. Solar version would have problems with comedically small seconds hand or even lack of one
Another Casio diver would be MTD-125D-1A2V
I think the Duro is stamped, not applied.
Citizen pro master bezel vibes i think
Casio never fails to put weird bezel notches on an otherwise normal/good looking watch
Original Duro😎👍
