  • “Chama To Cresco”, Rio Grande Southern helper engine #20 and road engine #455 “Double Head” out of Chama New Mexico with a Mixed Freight Extra. Watch the last run (before returning to the CRRM), of #20 to Cresco Tank in Part 1 of The RGS #20 & 455 “Chama To Cresco”, Part 2 & 3 Coming soon. #455 is really C&TSRR’s K27 #463 in disguise. Recently restored RGS #20 (from Colorado RR Museum, Golden) was trucked to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's 50th Anniversary Celebration for private charters following the week long Victorian Iron Horse Roundup.

Took this ride many year ago on our way to Philmont Scout Ranch. Had a great time, and the one-eyed blacksmith scared the bee-Jesus out of my son.

Nicely done, Bob. Thanks for your efforts. I was on the southbound trip from Silverton that day with SP18. Had to choose. 🤷🏼‍♂️
What an amazing time to be a rail buff. Cheers!

      Maybe Next Time!
Easy choice for me, I chased the #18 the day before and rode in caboose behind the Princess for the winter photographers special 2 years ago. I may not have another chance to see the #20 do the 4% grade out of Chama again. (I'm old) It was awesome! Thanks for watching and the compliment.

    Was #20 restored by Strasburg?

  • @TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan

Interesting why didn't they cut off number 20 before they had across the bridge?

Hey Tex, it's my understanding the rule book only talks/applies to 2 K36's or 1 K36 and 1K27 or larger. The same question/answer was asked when the #168 and the #315 crossed together.

  • @alexfarrell5533

7:00 I thought the bridge could only hold one engine

7:05 Wait a sec, why didn't they uncouple the engines before crossing that bridge???

The combination of 455 and 20 did not exceed the max weight limit for the Loboto bridge. Our orders gave us clearance across without stopping. I'm one of 20's crew.

@@paulmonce7625 huh, well that explains it as well, thx very much for the info. It just caught me by surprise and a little bit worried tbh since I think I do recall when seeing a video of Rio Grande 315/425 & 168 had to uncouple when going over the bridge during a run in late July 2021 from what I've seen in this video czcams.com/video/lNlaQmhcmXs/video.html
