  • WhatsOnStage recently paid a visit to the London cast of Slave Play during rehearsals for the show’s West End premiere.
Kit Harington, Olivia Washington, Chalia La Tour, Irene Sofia Lucio, Fisayo Akinade and James Cusati-Moyer discuss the 12-time Tony-nominated drama’s themes of race and sexuality, as well as transatlantic pairings, British attitudes towards Black history and the play’s personal impact on them in the video.
Written by Jeremy O Harris and directed by Robert O’Hara, Slave Play runs at the Noël Coward Theatre from 29 June to 21 September 2024.
The cast also features Aaron Heffernan and Annie McNamara, with Troy Alexander, Dimitri Gripari, Maite Jauregui, Prince Kundai, and Malikah Mcherrin-Cobb serving as understudies.
The creative team includes Clint Ramos (set design), Dede Ayite (costume design), Jiyoun Chang (lighting), Lindsay Jones (composition and sound design), Amy Ball (casting), Aundrea Fudge (voice and dialect coach), Claire Warden (intimacy and fight director), Taylor Williams (original US casting), and Wabriya King (drama therapist). Byron Easley serves as US choreographer, with Jade Hackett as UK choreographer.
Slave Play initially premiered at New York Theatre Workshop in 2018 before transferring to Broadway’s John Golden Theatre in 2019. The production received 12 nominations at the 74th Tony Awards.

Really wish teleportation existed. I love Kit and would love to see this. He is one of my favorite actors. I read the description on Wiki and there is definitely nothing else like it. Am tempted to fly over there just to see it. lol They should bring it to San Francisco. It would probably do well here, we love weird things. (Why don't theatre groups travel around like musicians ever?) Also I feel like this cast will do it better justice than I saw elsewhere here on youtube anyway. Looks like a great cast.

      I don’t think Britain needs more racism😢

@@ploppill34This isn't racism I don't think.. more like a weird discussion about racism. Though I guess I can see how some people might misunderstand it that way. Maybe the writer's just trying to use shock value to get famous, who knows.. but it's weird and unique and if it was somehow truly racist, I don't think so many black people would be okay with it. Read the wiki description.. it's not racist, it's just weird. Seems more about the characters being overly obsessed with race and racism.

This is REALLY INTERESTING revelation because when talk about these rehearsals first surfaced on CZcams there was either a British podcast or radio show that either picked up a rumor or CREATED a rumor that the theater was going to have certain performances be open to black audiences only.
This radio or podcast deal had 3 white people complaining vehemently about how this was reverse discrimination, blah, blah, how there never would be a white only audience performance, etc. I was flabbergasted watching this, wondering if the whole thing was some kind of staged farce. But then I read the comments and realized people were taking this very seriously and said all kinds of angry crap including trashing Kit for being involved. 🙄
I was not familiar with the plot of the play and the title made me wonder if it was a historical piece about slavery.
Now that I've seen this clip, it appears these people got bent out of shape over a bunch of false rumors.
They apparently heard about opening the play up to a more economically diversified audience (not hearing or listening about the lower price night)and somehow it got turned into black audience only nights.
The whole incident was very bizarre and reminded me how trump's poison helped regurgitate America's loudmouth racism and wonder if it is spreading to other countries.
I really hope these complainers are righteously embarrassed now that this clip is out.

If a feminist play had women only nights no one would bat an eye , if a play on sexual violence had survivor centered showings how considerate , if a play with racial themes has 2 nights with an audience centered on that experience for that diaspora we've gone back to the old days ... would I as someone who is allowed into that screening feel equally ostracised if the play was for and about south Americans or east Asians or south Asians, I don't think so . Something in this piece of art is supposed to reflect their experience in really tragic and hard to deal with way . Get as many people in as possible . The play touches on so much , that part of allowing everyone to see it , they have cheaps seats , they have a few dozen £1 tickets to several shows. All in a 3 month run , it's for everyone.... I went yesterday to a mixed show , there were available seats , there's still room for you ....
