How do all the Montreal tech-death bands have bassists with a fretless 6 string? That's like every country having their own private unicorn
Besides Forest and Hugo Doyon-Karout (Beyond Creation, Brought By Pain) and maybe the bass player from Intonate, I really can't think of anybody else who does. But then again Forest has played with a lot of the bands from that scene.
America has some, Germany has one, I know another European country does, the bassist for Arhideus, Archspire from Canada also has one. Every country has their own personal unicorn (A 6-string fretless bass player) :D Thank you all!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's less a question of how do they all have 6 string bassists, and more a question of how do they all have Dominic "Forest" Lapointe on the same 6 string bass.
Levi Slam I've basically boiled my searches for new music down to looking up all the bands Forest is in and somehow they all just nail it.
Its crazy how well he plays holding the instrument backwards
Biology is weird as hell. To think this is related to brain hemispheres and all of those things is crazy. I can't help but find weird how you guys play with the instrument facing the "regular" side hahaha
My hands are cramping from just watching this.
Forest is the best bassist in metal without a doubt. Nobody comes close to his execution, intonation, speed and creativity. My Hero
@FantasticBeastsFTW Vincent Savary wrote the original bass lines for the album however. Forest re-recorded this song in his own way.
I know he didn't write the bass lines for this song. I was referring to his writing in Beyond Creation.
I think his bass lines on BC's second album are a bit annoying. I really like his work better on the first album and on Augury's Concealed. He's no doubt very good and influential to this new generation of death metal, of couse.
Reasons to move to Canada:
1. Weed
2. Hockey
3. Tech Death
I'm not that much into hockey, but you already convince me with the other two
Excuse me store clerk do you have 35'' 6 string dual action rod fret-less bass guitars semi marked left handed
Cant seem to keep them on the shelves. I can you one. Be here in anout 2 weeks
Can’t see the headstock but the fret marking style is fairly unique. I think he’s playing an F bass and if so they are exclusively made to order. Unless it was a pawn shop find though being a lefty suggests he probably ordered it.
I could watch this guy just tune a bass and I think it'd still be pretty amazing somehow.
forest isn't a musician, he's a fucking magician.
Magicians use illusion to make it appear that they are doing something, on the other hand this guy is raw talent
@@BossDrSample, he’s worked insanely hard. You don’t play at this level without serious work.
There's a moment during the 4th or 5th time you're watching this video when you start to analize this bassline and wonder, as a bassist yourself, how much practice would it take to perform it with that mastery. I think around 800 years would do in my case.
To play, up to the second minute, i think it would take a month maybe. Like i said, to play, not actually master. Now, i shall look for a 6 string fretless
been practicing for two weeks, can almost play the first two minutes, i think itll take antoher week or two to get thte first two minutes down fully
Anything is possible. You just need to 1. have great technique and 2. start learning this at a slower tempo and gradually pick up the pace as you get more comfortable and clean.
How can Metal ever evolve past something like this? Remarkable
Cobweb Recordings [Retrowave ] it's kinda sad. I just don't see how it could ever be better than this. And people just don't like it like they like the less amazing stuff.
luke towner it think the worse is that 80% of the world will pass on this cause its not pop or other recycled radio friendly BS.... and they're all supossed to be about the bass.... :'(
Not everyone prefers this super technical and melodic stuff. You aren’t better than anyone else because you listen to this.
Today you have modern tech/progressive death metal giants like First Fragment, Beyond Creation, Archspire, Obscura. Then you have the djent/prog/fusion bands like Animals as Leaders, TesseracT, Intervals... I much prefer the classical tech death sound for the atmosphere it creates
Wow!!! This is FANTASTIC!!! Finally a progressive bass player that does not abuse of one technique only and used many techniques to make each part outstanding. Excellent finger picking, beautiful taps and slides, percussive slap, chordal playing, and everything so tasteful.
I don't want to scare you, but without the vocals, this song becomes neoclassical
It is, hell, go listen to their new album, many of epics- i mean songs.... have 5+ minute instrumentals of.... Classical, with some insane drumming.... Neo classical, go figure.
@@zakaryedwards5978 yeah first fragment is basically classical music on like... a shitload of amphetamines or something
There is more Renaissance/Baroque influence & mood than actual Metal in that music. It’s technically mîdblowing but neither dark nor violent
Agreed, it doesn't have that heavy dark metallic edge of a group like Necrophagist, this has more in common with yngwie malmsteen than Necrophagist, harmonically
When the new album Gloire Éternelle is clearly Flamenco inspired …
Searched for a piano cover cus i wondered the same and it definitely does hahah
First Fragment was awesome before, but having Forest in the band is not only going to make their music even better, but also attract more fans because of his legendary status. I can't wait to hear new material with him on bass!
Fun fact, I meet First fragment because I was watching another Forest's playthrough for another band, then CZcams did it's thing.
He is the best and the most underrated bassist in the world.
How so? He's generally regarded as one of, if not the best death metal bassist. You can't expect the "general populace" to praise him if he only plays a genre of music that the vast majority of people simply hate.
moonra they scared by monstrosity and chaotic musical stuff....tell that to muy neighboo
Legend has it that he is the first man to discover in addition to the female G spot, the A,B,C,D,E and F spot!
How am I only seeing one of my favorite songs being performed by one of my favorite bassists now?!?!?!?
What surprises me is the huge delicacy with which he plays this masterpiece, a painter not a bassist
Videos like this make me question the boundaries of technicality
That was awesome ! So happy to hear Dominic in another technical metal band with his fretless !
So amazing i couldn't pause it to go to the toilet. Almost pissed myself.
Such an incredible musician
Instant subscription.
Forest is the best bass player ever (in my opinion), my biggest inspiration, and every new video of his playthroughs just inspires me even more.
Martyr of Grenth Him, jaron evil and scott plummer are my biggest inspirations as a bassist and a musician. To me theyre all equal as the best.
I love how clear the bass is on the album!
Is it even possible to describe how amazing lineup this band has?
This is a true definition of art
This man has THE BEST bass tone ive ever heard. Very impressive.
Davie504 : left
How many times am I gonna have to say this. Davie504 ruined bass playing on CZcams. I can't scroll through one bass video without seeing something related to him in the comments. It's fucking annoying. Please stop.
@@Arjithki yes it is. Davie and his fans are the most annoying fucks on the internet
It's pretty cool that the manager of this account is replying to people in the comments.
4:03 wow amo esa parte
Beautiful bass and super tight playing, as always!
So good! I worship Forest's godlike abilities. It looks like it's an accelerated video
#HailForest
Left hand fretless mastery, could this man be Steve DiGiorgio’s other hand doppelgänger? His technique is flawless, his dynamics are tight and controlled. Absolutely amazing work.
Outstanding
That 6-string fretless is a real beauty
Sick as always.
simple man I see forest I click.
What an amazing performance! Great job!
Some of the best playing I've ever seen!! 🎶
This made my day
Sounds great and very creative. Good job! I like the First Fragment logo a lot also! \m/
Every new Forest evolution blow my head... Eargasm
fretless works so well on this. All hail Forest Fragment!!!!
Sounds amazing and his positioning is so on point. I love watching someone play when their technique is so flawless.
Like if he dipped his left thumb in ink I'm sure by the end of this song you would see a perfectly straight line up and down the neck. So in control.
His unused pinky is mesmerizing after awhile..
Dylan Leason haha I am a bass player and I've never noticed his pinky before lmao
The weird thing is, when I took lessons from Forest, he used his pinky constantly, and that's one part of his technique that I left aside because it seemed awkward to me - he would do fast fingering with index-major-index-pinky-repeat. He stopped using this technique for some reason over the years.
He taught me that pinky technique too. I practiced it for a few months and realized I could never push it as far as I would like to. So I stick to what suits me. It was amazing to see him do it though!
This is what metal needs now. More of this and this will the the beginning of something amazing.. Evolution for metal
Wow just wow 😮
pure talent, #forest. all amazing, especially how you keep intonation perfect during your tapping. bravo, monsieur. 🤘❤
I love FIRST FRAGMENT, et DOMINIC FOREST LAPOINTE C'est un excellent bassiste et gaucher en plus
It’s so nice to see another left handed bassist
what an extraordinarily talented group of dudes . great music
This is a masterpiece. Forest is a virtuoso. Genious! Bravo!!! Looking forward for the third album!
Christ almighty, Dominic Lapointe is quickly becoming my biggest inspiration as a bassist. This is the first I've heard of First Fragment, but I'm definitely checking you guys out more!!
Toujours un délice Forest pour les 👂🙏🤘
Amazing, elegant and precise.... That's great metal.
This is a combination I would have never seen coming, and is a rather perfect fit at that.
This is also some of your strongest writing to date, holy moly.
This playthrough has 34 times more views than the song itself. This is evidence of what makes this band amazing.
A technical exercise. Maybe speaks a lot about modern takes on music.... It's about technicality, not about creativity and atmosphere/feel.
@@cd0u50c9 I agree with you in most cases. Tech/Prog music is sometimes too... Cold. Lots of virtuosity but without a purpose or cohesion. First Fragment is different in my opinion. They are virtuous without sacrificing melodic, harmonic and structural quality. My favorite metal band right now.
THIS has feeling and soul, the difficulty is part of the work he's presenting us. If you were a painter, you could be Van Gough, but if you try and sell me a finger painting while claiming it means something, i'm going to pick my nose and sell you one back, and ask you what it means to you. Life imitates art? Well so do children, and if my kid can do it unprompted, then I'm less impressed. They didn't put our playdough abominations in museums for us to go see on field trips, we went and looked at statues carved meaningfully, and with skill, that skill can be expressed in lots of ways, Mozart being deaf and still being, well, fucking Mozart, makes it even cooler right?
Like yeah it sounds cool but imagine, imagining what all of that sounded like but never hearing what it sounded like...
Anyone can apply ink to a canvas, but some create art, so detailed and skillfully that it cannot be easily replicated EVEN WITH EXTENSIVE PRACTICE. He's painting them a picture with a paintball gun from 500 yards and he gets complaints he seems too focused on his aim?
I wish he did solo playthroughs, just to hear the composition, I'm certainly not good enough to learn the parts and play them alone, but to say it's just an exercise is to reduce this to a scale run, and it's not in the least.
@@cd0u50c9 you’re a moron if you don’t think this is creative or lacks atmosphere
So smooth. Wow!
This is beautiful. I even held my breath for a moment, that's how impressed I was. Amazing bassist and great music.
Been playing bass a long time seeing this gives me hope in the path I have chosen. pure unadulterated greatness
Thank you
Sick!
I can't stop to shake my head now ! damn
Wonderful!
video pode ser antigo mas sempre assistindo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ amo o jeito que ele tocar
Brilliant, Hail Dominic!
holy shat! from beyond creation to this. his work is just perfect for fretless bass. he might just become my favorite bass player yet. well done ! :D
Breathtaking! Dominic is amazing. I look forward to the new album.
this was a random good suggestion video for me lol
Sick!! Dominic is a fucking beast
thanks to you and your amazing videos i have finally started to learn this wicked tech. i solute you sir
Simply amazing.
The way his head moved when he felt what he was playing.
Holy frogshit batman someone needs to show this to Glenn Fricker
Don't know how sarcastic you are, but Glenn Fricker never pokes fun at all bassists, just the ones who are already broken in by guitarists who just want someone to further boost their ego.
@@putridabomination more of a guitarist nowadays, but I played bass for 8 years both fretted and fretless. Some bassists stopped trying to do their best because their entire environment (band) want them to not be noticed. After constant nagging from my previous bands lead guitarist I switched from fretless to fretted and played far less inspired things, and suddenly he was happy with the way the rehearsal sounded. Namely, his guitar parts were heard better.
First Fragment was the biggest discovery for me in 2019. Thanks for wonderful music.
Who has the decency to dislike this???
Love how this has more views than the actual song
ÉSTE HOMBRE NO PIENSA EN EL MIOCARDIO DE INOCENTES. AMAZING !
love it
amazing !!!!
half of the views are porbably mine, I can't help but to watch this every day
I first heard Forest in Beyond Creation. Omnipresent Perception was my inspiration to become a bassist. I wanna hear him do some solo work like.
This dude.... God damn!! I'm a guitarist of 20+ years but when I see dudes like this it makes me break out my 6 string bass and go ham.
played with his headshaking!! i love this full immersion in the song
Here you are Forest, I've been wondering where you went.
Wow amazing 🤩
So good to see Dominic with this band, it's a fantastic fit!
1% of bassist are left handed
Forest: hold my beer
OUTSTANDING!!
Sublime...
although he didn't compose the baseline...
man, the execution and precision is awesome
When you're in a death metal band, but Primus is life.
primus is shit. first time i saw them with slayer i though they were gonna be something crazy like pink floyd but they played the same riff for 10 fuckin mins thats not even experimental music.
Apple you’re exaggerating. The average length for their songs is about 4 minutes. While there is repetition in their songs, it’s never to the point where it becomes jarring, and each song has a fair bit of diversity.
@@Finn-gx6ir Wow you're abit angry? Did you get abused to 'Over the electric grape vine'?
Yep, it's 2020... you guys are still ahead of your time
This bassist kicks ass
This has inspired me to give up the bass
The day you have nothing new to learn is the day you should quit. he shifted the goalpost right to the gates of GAWD DAMN!
