One of the most useful time-saving tricks I've ever learned while After Effects is Copy With Property Links and Copy With Relative Property Links. If you don't spend time reading through all the menu items in Adobe software then you probably never knew it existed, but it will seriously change the way you work forever. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to take advantage of this little-known feature that's basically the closest thing to a node-based workflow we can get in After Effects.

Gotta say, so glad you’re on CZcams! After effects already has a good community about it but you’re bringing heat with every upload 🙌🏾
I have watched all your skillshare classes and i look forward for more. All can say that you are a great teacher! Thank you so much for doing what you love to do! 🙌🏼
Mind blown! I have always pick-whipped my effects to create the expressions, this is such a time saver!
What an excellent tip and super clear breakdown for a great tutorial, as always! You're the man, Jake! Loving the Skillshare courses too 🙌
This literally changed my life. Thank you so much.
Love your work. Love your new class.
Cheers from Brazil!

Great tip!
I always searched this and couldn't find or understand exactly what the difference is, and when I found this I got really happy!
Thanks!
Thanks for your awesome tutorials! I saw this trick from the schmeeer video, and have been using it ever since. I need to get around to making a skillshare account so I can watch more of your videos!
Top work as usual Jake! I often link the seed of the Turbulence displace to the index of the layer, that way the noise on each layer is unique, especially good for the larger turbulence displace, otherwise they tend to synch slightly.
Also you can copy the effect and paste it on multiple layers at the same time :)
I've been wondering what the difference between "property links" and" relative property links" was. You explained it so quickly and easily. Thanks for sharing, Jake.
my goodness, Jake! thank you so much for sharing this. this is going to be a game changer
Love your series about effects 😍
HOW did i not know that! Thats huge. Im so happy we have you back on YT!
thanks Jake!!! that's such a time saver!!
Brilliant! Thank you, very helpful
this is actually so useful thank you!!
Oh. My. God. I never realized... This is such a time saver! Thanks Jake!
Immensely useful tips, great channel ! Thanks a lot :)
Super utile, sei il migliore nel settore di gran lunga!
Thank you so much! Very useful tip.
Thanks for the video as always!
MY JAW LITTERALLY DROPPED 😧😧😧 Thank you !!!
Brilliant! Thank you
Thats a great tip! Thanx
great tutorial as always. I use "copy with property links" every now and then.
Good Job, Jake!
Three minutes in and you've already described what I was JUST doing for the past few days...copying effects and pasting them individually. The entire time I was wondering "there has to be a better way of doing this"
Thank you.
You can also use 'paste expressions only'.
You can paste on multiple layers at the same time
Omg. Mind blown. Thanks
Perfection!!
really helpful man
Oh wow, that's super useful. Awesome.
Really helpful
I knew this technique but little used .. because a few years ago, it required a lot of machine resources. But now our machines are much more efficient. And I admit I don't remember. Thanks for the reminder.
That's a useful trick !! It's similar to the linked properties in Blender !
10 years of After Effects, never seen it in menus ! 🤭
Outstanding.
Thanks!
Anubis is, no joke, the most useful plugin I have in my arsenal (and I use Motion 3 a lot!). Just being able to render and transcode quickly and automatically from AE has saved me tons of hours that would've gone waiting for Media Encoder to even work.
I also have Anubis and it's lovely, but would you say clicking Ctrl+Alt+M + setting to MP4 by default is that demanding?
Demanding? No. Inconvenient to have to open another program just to spit out an MP4? Absolutely. For the price, the convenience of Anubis is a no brainer to my workflow.
@@JakeInMotion Well, since the latest update where Anubis can render in the background and not stall AE - it began to be great..
oh this is fantastic
Insane trick
Excellent
Great tutorial and super useful. At first I couldn’t get this to work and then I realized I had accidentally turned the effects off. Oh After Effects…….. 🤦🏻♀️
merci !
Damn I use Ae for years and jsut discovered that feature 😅 Thanks for the discover !
Nice video
I would like to know if there is a way to equally distribute keyframes. Suppose I want the first and the last keyframes in the same position but have all the in-between keyframes equally distributed, is there a way to do that?
Just noticed the "Jake" window in your workspace 👌
This (Again) feels like Neo's "I Know Kung Fu" but for After Effects. Thanks (Again) Jake!
Just bought signature edition and tNice tutorials tutorial I've watched a few tis. Am having a blast atm lol
Genial!!!
Ahh man, once you got to “Copy Relative Property Links” I can’t imagine why I would use regular ole “Copy Property Links.”
I’m sure that works for someone’s workflow, but I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want to save yourself an eventual extra step.
Great video, thank you! I’m already thinking about how I can incorporate this into my next project.
Its way more niche that's for sure.
If you wanted to set up a global colors comp, you could use regular copy with property links to drive colors throughout the entire project. Though I'd definitely recommend you just get Ray Dynamic Color.
Really loving this!
The only problem is that the "Random Seed" Expression for the Boil effect has all the layers move in the same exact manner. How can you create a different seed / speed between all those layers in a single move? They're all connected to the same effect on the "Global Controls" NULL, so that's why they all react the same...
You could multiply the random seed by the index of the layer, or use seedRandom to set the seed to be the index value.
Hey jake! I just wanted to say that (for me) the "s" sound on your voice is a bit loud... I don't know if you do any audio processing on it or if its maybe the mic but if you agree with me you could use an effect called a "deesser" on audition (i'm not sure if it exisists in Pr) to help keep those "esses" controlled.
Btw Loved the tip will share with all my animator friends :)
I didn't notice that. (laptop speakers)
yes, the deesser exists in premiere and works well.
I dont think im there in the expressions level yet, but noting this for sure
So basically null basically is a tool where you can link multiple comp if you want to edit assets the same?
Yes, but they have all kinds of other uses too. czcams.com/video/8ei_cj6A2Gg/video.html
Interesting but why not to use an adjustment layer and apply effects on it ?
He's aiming to teach how to use Copy with Property Links function, this is only an example.
Or any layer as guide layer
I would also guess he's using Global Control Layer with null, to have separate effect on each layer. Because if you would use all these effects on Adjustment layer, the final effect on those separate layers would be as one single unit, without any small intricacies that is seen when you apply those effects to separate layers.
That's exactly right. Being able to apply effects to specific layers instead of across the entire comp is very useful. A boil effect might not seem like a great example but if you wanted to isolate the effect to only certain layers and not the background, this would be a great solution.
Does it works with text ? Like tracking, size, ecc...
It works with any keyframeable property.
@@JakeInMotion yes that what you already said in the video...
Sorry, I thought that answered your question. Individual text properties aren't controllable with keyframes, so no, the only thing you're able to use this on with text is the source text property.
@@JakeInMotion ok so, unfortunately, no magic behind that command. I know it's possible to manually create controllers for the text features throuch scripting (and there are plugins too that do that) but it's pretty painful and I think you can't still control everything like inter-letter spacing. I'm asking cos I found myself creating an animated text composed by multiples copy of the text, one of them it's precomposed and I'd like the text to be linked so that I can change for example the tracking, the font and the size, just by editing the master text. Maybe the solution was to keep my master text in it's own comp and use that comp anytime I needed a copy of it to be customized with layer styles and effects. I should try and check if I encounter other issues.
6:39 Kids are the best! 😜
film riot has ruined me: everytime you say "turbulent displace" I get distracted lol
Could you please point me in the direction of that reference? So many people have commented about turbulent displace man and somehow I haven't been able to find the source.
Jake is gonna be Andrew Kramer of this decade. People will talk about him in future 🫡
