    It's so touching to me that this absolute legend of a racing driver thinks about people who really want to have all the joy of motorsport but can't afford it. He comes off as a person who just wants everyone to have as much fun as he has racing and really is standing behind the culture.

      reminds me of when they saw the JUN prelude H22c. Low-er than standard RPM vtec profile, low end torque too, and the same sentiment to the pre owned value and aspects towards young or low wage earners as having Good vtec power over a b16/b18 vtec honda.

      What really saddens me is that young people would probably get these kindof cars but without MT transmission in 2030, he said this in the video. I learned to drive with MT and drive every day with MT transmission, shame production cars in 2030s would probably not be equipped with MT.

      @@ramal5708 Truly. I know MT’s or manual transmissions can be overly hyped up as fun and better than AT’s, but I genuinely believe they are. Once I got a little taste of the car scene, I was so desperate for my next car to be equipped with a MT. Grateful to say that my next car was indeed one with a MT, and it’s still my current daily. I never get bored driving it. Learning how to rev-match and heel-toe, ugh the driving experience is unparalleled. A shame really that the future for MT’s is a sad reality.

    Watching this makes me realize how 86 is supposed to be a regular dinky civilian car, not an HP monster lmao. People really forgot what cars are about, they always say "if you tune yours to keep up with mine, I can tune mine and win", but such people can't win by superior driving. It became a battle of who's car is faster, not who is a better driver, kind of sad.

      @@r32guy85 Going fast on a straight line requires no skill compared to going fast on corners and up&down hills. Toyota 86s offer plenty of car control disciplines.

    When the part of him talking about the 86 made my heart sour tbh.. The background music and the way he talks just touched me . Then I realized he looks old and only then i realized he's 65 this year.. I grew up watching his old dvds and then it hit me , i'm getting old too . Maan it's hurts knowing that he's probably not going be able to keep driving like that soon . And soon , when he's gone , the 86 will start to disappear as well. True legend.

    Watching Keiichi talk about wanting companies to keep younger enthusiasts in mind really made me emotional, I’m 30 years old this year and I’ve been watching and learning from this man since I was about 13 years old. His wisdom and passion for motorsport is inspiring, but watching him grow older feels the same way as watching a family member you care for greatly grow old to me. This man is a treasure to the racing world and we’re lucky to have him.

      I always find it amazing.
      You watch UK or US car shows and they all like it drives amazing the power is great or its amazing, but just slow..
      You watch Tsuchiya and he gives u completely different view on the car I love it personally

      Now, try to buy this car. Even if you could easily afford it when it was released, it was impossible to buy it, because Toyota hardly made any. It wasn't really a car for anyone. It was a marketing flick, made to make people think warm of Toyota before internal combustion cars are retired and sports cars are no more. They probably anticipated they can't make any money with this car, so they made just a few units to heat up the fame and the fact that nobody could buy it is lost in verses.

      and sadly it was the case given kids these days love to shit mouthing the GR supra "oOOH it de ZuPr4" whilst drooling over whatever the latest multi million hypercars from the Bugatti's, Koenigseggs, and the like that'll eventually forgotten as the said companies announced the sucessors/limited versions of those said cars

      @@adlibbed2138 XD yet here i am trying to get an aw11, with my eyes set on saving up for one of these GR86. BC im willing to admit the 400z is just too expensive+mods. With one day getting a salvaged GR86 far down the road for experimental build fun.

      @@adlibbed2138 I am a huge JDM car nerd, i daily a 98 WRX, and my beater is a 1985 GT-S Corolla, but there’s a car community for everyone. Some people like cars built for racing from the factory, rather than a Small little JDM Car. People who can afford hyper/super cars should have the right to buy them imo. I’ll still always love JDM but, I’ll never judge another car community. (Except for squatted trucks and ricers lol)

    Thank you for posting this! As an European I highly appreciate the Japanese approach to cars. Very modern and a little bit old school at the same time. Japanese sport cars are “pure” and simple. Everything is about lightness, responsiveness and pleasure. We lost that in Europe as cars are getting heavy and complicated. Thank you Japan and thank you Toyota for producing the GR86!

      We had 3 series compact which is like Europian 86 but sadly its finished and replaced with 1 series and for fun one you need to pay too much... Also all sportish cars are too expensice for average people... And co2 is making expensice to import any used sportish car. For example if i want import e46 330 i or 330d from Germany to Croatia i need to pay 6k € for co2 alone and car price is 2k €. With average salary of 700€ per month it is hard to acumulate 7k€ for 90s rwd shitbox.... Let alone new car

      @@ThatOneCatNyx 330ci is fun car, just watch your rear end subframe its known to have troubles. With few cheap mods you can have realy fun weekend car. If i had one i would just invest in subframe lsd and suspension, if you realy want to have track car then gut it. Its great car and it dont need too much power to have fun. I am thinking about buying e46 compact and maby in futureengime swap 3.0 disel or m54b30, and lsd... And just use it every few weeks for trashing on muoutain roads. But its lot of money. 200-250 hp is sweet spot for not rich people to have fun few times per month... Everithing above needs too much money... Oh with manual that car is lot of more fun...

      Too bad you can't buy them. There was next to no volume of cars available to buy. I think Tsuchiya and Tada meant well, but Toyota management used them to make a marketing flick since making these cars is not really profitable. That's why almost none were made. Most countries got less than 20 units to buy or none. It's a joke as bad as 80s quality of General Motors.

      I feel like most Japanese people, specially the more mature has a more low key thing.
      They don't brag and show their private life for everybody. I could be wrong about it, but it's how I see my previous experiences.

    I like how he is honest about tuning the wrong way. That's why I like it when the car is tuned in Japan because they look at everything not just power. In the states they are just power hungry even if it's damaging the engine. I like the way he think.

      i mean look at those cartubers....some guy did a celica gt with a beams swap and a bunch of out of the catalogue parts...like 60k build...or that other car tuber that k swapped their FD.....and bought it already with a k swap for 14000 and spent 60K+ too in parts/labor. Imagine being DIY and investing into something like that when they all aluminum LS engines for 400+HP out the door with a brand new trans for less. Most hard parkers couldnt even drive an aggressive cam or a built rotary as it is. And hes right about tuning the right way if i had the money to k swap a rolling chassis 240z i would vs trying to run an rb26 or an os giken build. Imagine replacing a clutch or rear end/dif on an os giken z and how long that process would take to get the parts and install etc. I mean there forsure is an aspect of efficacy. Just like ppl 3sge swapping mr2's. Plus as the years had passed theyre come more modern and expensive stand alone sytems that just make matters worse in that tuning/cost aspect....even in MERICA with carbed built strokers...switching to EFI or holley throttle body entails a lot to max out a platform/head/fuel utilized. Even worse adapting "classic" chassis to use that power. Where most ppl will ideally swap newer z parts like steering/brakes etc from z32 into their z31 or etc s chassis parts into their z31....or various other examples in japan. Plus america has had its history at the dragstrip as a way of "benchmarking" performance outside of actual track racing. I mean the GT-R and Vette recently are responsible for so many new(expen$$ive) tire blends/compounds in the last 15 year window....look at how much spoon charges for 200+ HP NA "reliable" like can be ran for high endurance/abuse forged internals etc.....people think its all fun and games. Plus it should be subjective as it is to the drivers style/ability/capability and typically tire and brake potential if cornering.

    Theres no better person to review handling than the DK himself. Drivers car reviewed the way it is meant to be and not wasting time on who's faster in a straight or whos got more cupholders when its meant to be spilled on (yes you will)

    I can see now why the new 86 isn't a crazy expensive car like the Lexus LFA. They could make a monster car and slap the 86 name on it and people would love it. But DK himself wanted young people in this generation to be able to afford a fun and fast sports car that doesn't break the bank. He understands that young people want to own nice and fun cars but obviously most of them can't afford to spend a lot of money to have such cars. Which is why FT86 was born. He knows that most would go to the used market because it's cheaper and modify it to their liking but eventually spending even more than they should have just to be at an acceptable level. He spent 13 million yen (~115 000 USD) just on his AE86. Imagine that.

    Man I’m glad I got to see this in my time. Mr Tsuchiya doing a thorough review and test for the gr86. It feels so refreshing and gratifying that he is the one who tested it. And even better to know he approved of the car in general. I really do want to own one some day. I’m glad they are going to produce them in the future as well. Makes me have great hope that I can still be a car enthusiast.

    Tsuchiya: the rear tyres do not slip so much.
    Also Tsuchiya > proceeds to put the car into a drift immediately after stating the above.

      If you're skilled enough and could maintain control of a sliding car then you could do it as well, he's using power slide, braking or weigh shifting drift techniques.
      The easiest to make a car slide is of course with handbrake but you're a intermediate or expert drifter if you could make a car slide without EBrakes.
      Sadly there won't be any old fashioned EBrake that could be use for drifting anymore in the future as most manufacturers starting to equip cars with electric EBrakes smh.

      If you are talking about downvotes, then its just 83+ subaru fans who are annoyed by the video featuring a subaru built car with the toyota brand plastered all over the video with not a single mention of the combined efforts to make such an amazing car. I didnt quite watch the entire video because it felt like a toyota commercial instead of a car enthusiasts video.

    That sinking feeling when he said MT's will be gone in 2030. I'm all for the environment but I'm exceedingly sad at the strict timeline to go electric. I can't afford a brand new car by then and it's depressing to think I'll never drive a new car that I will enjoy. Hearing him talk about driving the car as it's intended without mods was touching too, allowing a lower resale value but unfortunately people mod these cars to no end.

      Unless there’s some Japanese law I don’t know about I think the comment about manual transmissions being gone by 2030 was more about the trend of cars and buyers. Vast majority of cars are either automatic or paddle shift at best. Even super cars are almost exclusively paddle. I think it’s more a case of convenience and ease of use over anything else. Though in the case of paddle shifting they do shift much faster than stick.
      I hope manuals don’t disappear by 2030 though.

      Man, i drove an electric in a reaching game and all i can say is, i can really see the potential for an electric car with maybe 2 gears and a clutch for the sake of control not to shift necessarily, but i would really like an electric car with a manual, they're basically rotary engines but with 0 emissions in that way lol.

    I actually teared up when Tsuchiya san was talking about 86's and the history of them. To think one day the legendary 86 will cease to exist due to the movement of electric cars, as a petrol head it really pains me. What makes me even more sad is that I recently purchased a brand new AMG as I wanted something practical and fun so it would be difficult for me to get the GR86 which I am insanely in love with and the fact that apparently it will only be sold for 2 years is heart breaking as I think it might be hard to even get hold of a used one in the future.

      I feel you. I have the frs and the gr86 10AE now. I don’t know if I’ll ever sell them. The GR is definitely just a polished version of the frs. Everything about it feels so dialed, I’m scared to replace parts and tuning since Toyota did their due diligence with dialing this car in.

      I don't see why electric cars should mean the 86 is going to die? They can just use an electric motor instead of a 2.4L boxer engine, the 86 line was never good for the engines anyways

    I'm 15 about to turn 16 soon I've never really had interest in cars until recently I started watching Mr tsuchiya videos,hot version, car prime, and etc I didn't know you could tune cars to crazy levels not in terms of their power tuning but mechanical tuning I didn't know much about cars I didn't know cars have so much potential if you really look into it Mr tsuchiya has inspired me to learn about cars and have fun with them all I've been doing is racing in asseto corsa but I never really knew what really makes a car good or bad I didn't knew such small difference in specs could amount to much better performance I still have so much to learn about cars and I don't think I'll get bored anytime soon

    Having owned a 2013 gt86, and now a 2015 brz, it makes me happy seeing this line being kept alive, i hope that even if we do go electric, they find a way to make it manual

    I have not payed much attention to the gr86. But after watching this video, my interest renewed again. The way he reviewed the car talking about the details toyota put to enhance the driving experience and how the handling was improved from the ft86.

    Man i was born and raised on Okinawa, and went back as an adult, left in 2017... Its so important to have videos like this, young people need to understand that you dont need to have a 1000hp car to truly enjoy driving, and its sad what has happened with the used car market, especially in Japan... On one hand im happy that the entire world is finally recognizing Japanese sports cars for how great they were, and still are.. But i am sad that so many people will never get to experience it. With all the cars that ended up being destroyed or left to rust in junk yards.... plus Automakers completely turning away from making engaging cars while focusing more on electric cars with no feel or passion behind the wheel, im thankful for cars like the 86 and the new fairlady. Keep making videos! Pass on the tradition to the next generation and here is to hoping my kids and others will be able to enjoy cars like we did!

    I miss my dads Subaru BRZ. Sure out of the box they lacked more horsepower and torque but they really made up for it in the driving experience and going through twisty mountain roads. Unforgettable memories and experience. Thank you Toyota

      Yeah I think he was following instructions with a walkie talkie from some cameramen in the modified Porsche Panamera Turbo ahead, to get those intro shots. It would be nice to see an onboard footage too.

    This man (and a lot of GR86 videos and ad) has made me seriously consider GT86. Obviously I cannot afford GR86 rn. GT86 however looks like a great platform for me. I'm about to go and check one out in the next few days, see whether it is as great as people say. I want something different in life. If Keiichi says that the car is great, than I have pretty high expectations

    It's always a treat to see Keiichi Tsuchiya, his love for driving and fun-loving spirit is inspiring and contagious lol. I used to work for Toyota as a mechanic and was shocked to disbelief when the FT86 was announced. Thank you Tada-san! I never dreamed after the Prius Toyota would ever dare make a car again like the AE86 or my personal favorite its big brother MA67 aka the MkII Celica Supra from the same era. The old 'underpowered' MA had a similar philosophy pre turbo to the 86. A responsive chassis with enough power and gearbox to have fun with room to grow. It would be interesting to see if they could do a modern MR2 and Celica.
    Anyone can spend enough R&D money to make a safe and reliable car to go to work or the grocery store for a fair price. What made Toyota special and successful when I was a kid was they made something for everyone's needs, especially us gearheads thanks to TRD. Oh what a feeling indeed. Toyota is in a position where they can make cleaner cars for the masses but do not have to totally abandon the average car enthusiast or pro racing. The other manufacturers could too, but they often make their sports cars too expensive for most people to attain even used.

    Although I don't have cars at all, the moment Tsuchiya talks about AE86 being made in a time where the trend went to FF, against the trend, brought tears to my eyes. I've always been unpopular and do things that do not go along the trend.... and I know how much risk, how hard it is totally in my heart. These people are heroes to me, regardless of sales volume, aiming for the best performance.

      You can blame BMW for this. Their cars all work this way and since the Supra is made by them, I think Toyota brought it to the 86 to bring it inline with the Supra. Also, it isn't bad once you get used to it. I struggled with it at first as well.
