RIP Eddie. The rock and roll world will never be the same without you 🤘🤘😢
:(
Yep...I felt the same way I heard about Brad Delp.
My heart 💔
That's true. Without u there's gonna b a BIG chunk of music missing 😪🙏
Top 5 4 sure!
Once, in an interview, when asked if he was a good singer when he first started singing, Dave said, "I always knew I was going to be a rock and roll singer. It never occurred to me whether or not I was any good."
Sounds like something vince neil would say. Literally
this
so he basically knew, somehow, that he was (or would eventually be) a good singer, duh. It was a bold way of saying that, in fact, he was.
@@truthh8322 - except Dave can actually sing. ;D
@@Bodca1 - nah, it's a way of saying rock and roll doesn't gaf if it's good or not.
Sadly, Jamie isn't the only one crying now. We all are! R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen!
Facts :(
First song i looked up when i heard the news
True that !!! Wow !! Rip Eddie Van Halen
Agreed!!!
Too true. I had just recently commented on a thread that one of my first rock concerts was Van Halen's 1980 World Invasion tour (row 4 on the floor but up against the crush barrier the entire show). The highlight of course was when Eddie flicked his guitar pick at me. RIP Mr. Van Halen and thank you for sharing your musical gifts with the world. I feel fortunate to have been in this timeline to hear the best music ever created, 60s - 80s.
This has to be one of the greatest ROCK songs ever. The drum lead in, Eddie, the killer bass and Dave is Chill.
Seriously it puts me on a hypnotic mode! I think of high school and those were the best times and the best music, ! Oh to be young and beautiful again!
@@karadodge7118 Old is beautiful. It is very hypnotic. I just love the video of them playing instead of all the OCD spazzing vids that took over after MTV hit big. Not all of them were but so too many. lol It is so cool and soul warming.
This was the very 1st Van Halen song I ever heard and it’s still my most sentimental favorite
This song beat is still I would say the song with the sexiest beat of any song ever . BA BOOMP ba boomp ba boomp ba BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOMP BOOMP …… and so on !
David Lee Roth said in an interview as anyone who knows a decent amount of the bands history would know that this song was a result of the club playing days and even before. They use to play bars, backyard keggers and private parties , weddings , .grand openings of malls , muffler shops , pretty much anything this side of street corners with a change bucket in front of them . Not only was it anything goes , it was also anywhere you want it that they would do , Eddie once said yeah for a time we were doing things like loading up all the equipment, spending $30 in gas , to drive an hour or more one way , to a gig that paid them $50 - $60 for the gig and if they were lucky the would get fed and all the beer they could drink ( but not always) and after gas and a few misc expenses would split the left over $20 bill ., 4 ways and that’s if some equip didn’t breakdown , or one of theirs cars didn’t breakdown , anyway you get the picture . I would still love to get ahold of a copy of the band playing ( Get Down Tonight) as it use to be a staple of their set . But anyway I’m gettin out there . So Dave once said they played a Mexican Biker Bar or community Center , and someone thought it would be a good idea to thrown a little Latin music in there for the crowd , what started out to be a song dripping with Spanish flavor , a kind of light poppy
Ricky Ricardo BaBa Lou type of thing wound up being Jamies Cryn kinda thing. Unfortunately for our south of the border friends and their associates , about the only thing Latin that remained in the final on the album version of the song was Alex’s BaBa Lou like drum intro . But the song was a result of traveling all over to play any place , to play in front of anybody , anytime for practically any amount,. ! True nomads , faithful Gypsies to the cause. What’s really a trip to know is that from about 1976- thru 78 , they were a small venue garage band basically that had 10 times more talent and character than 9 out of 10 acts that had “made it” that you were hearing on the radio ! But you can’t hold a Volcano Power 10 force of Nature inside of a Power 5 container for very long . They were notoriety and financially starved and when it was decided to water plant , it sucked up thousand gallons of water without a blink , due to their professionalism that they had mastered in all of those hole in the wall “ hey baby doll , what’s a package like you doing in a place like this “. Joints . A true quartet forged in the ovens of diversity ! For absolute certain , there never has been and never will be anything remotely like them . If the rest of the world wants Led Zeppelin ( who I dearly love to death ). , then take them , I’ll take Van Halen . That’s Van Halen , you know , the meteor that hit planet earth in 1978 , causing more Global changes than the meteor that hit the Yucatán peninsula , wiping out the Dinosaurs 65,000,000 years ago !
The bass line in this is so damned HOT.
Michael Anthony is such a great bassist, facts.
So fucking hot you're right!
Always was in VH. Love it! Not too many bands could pull off only 3 instruments and make it sound like more. A few did.
🔥🔥🔥
Eddie once said he liked the fact that MA "plays *bass,* he doesn't play lead guitar on the bass."
Michael Anthony was so unappreciated in this band! Dude not only could bang on the bass like no other but he had a fantastic voice
I read somewhere that the KEY to VH was their bgv's. I can't disagree. Cuz after Michael left it wasn't the same.
@@meflove all of those high melodic vocals in the old and new VH were Michael Anthony's for the most part.
When we did covers, I was Michael, proudly, with my bottle, lol, Lisa

It's an integral part of what made Van Halen.
So cool how Eddie gets his guitar to simulate a crying Jamie. R.I.P. legend.

Great summertime jam!
I worked with Michael Anthony's brother, Bob (Sobolewsky), in Monrovia, Ca. One day, Michael dropped by the building we were working at. He came to give his kid brother a brand new Chevy Blazer for his birthday.
Michael Anthony is a great guy and very approachable. I chatted with Michael often, while he was living in Glendora, raising his family, like me. It was a shame that Eddie turned on him and gave him the boot.
By the way, Michael never bad-mouthed Eddie. Michael is a saint.
@Ron String Sammy and Eddie did. Not sure about Michael but probably him also.
@ ron. They never did bury that hatchet
No band will ever come close to this fantastic music .
Love
@Proton2112 I have heard that, but those transgressions against MA were so significant, that it was always going to be tough to pull off. I was a late teen right when the first albums were coming out, and dug them from Day 1. After reading Noel Monk's book, and hearing from Sammy and a couple of other rock legends about JUST how awful the brothers were, I almost didn't want the reunion. Insult to Michael. Oh, ok, so now you are 60 and you suddenly regret brutally f'n me over ? Take a hike guys....
@Proton2112 WORD! If there's a RRHOF for background singers, MA would be there right next to the "PIPS" :)
The first time I heard this song was when I entered the military in '78. Van Halen was rockin' everywhere on base, it kept us sane in an insane time. It made us a band of brothers when we didn't even know each other. I'll never forget it.
Thank you for your service my brother. I was in the US Navy March of 1985 to March of 1992 and I know what you mean. They debuted February of 1978 and the world changed the rock world that is

That first album. EVERYBODY remembers where they were when they first heard it. I was 16 yrs old in my room on a cold February night in 1978, doing my homework which was rare for me LOL. I was listening to a rock FM radio station when the DJ said "ok, this is a new band out of L.A. that is going to BLOW YOUR MIND". I was a huge Michael Schenker fan but when I heard the first riff of "Running with the Devil" I knew the world of rock would never be the same...
Heard it in Jr high art class fall of 78!
I heard it on Guitar Hero Van Halen back in about 2010 or whenever the game came out - I think I was drinking a Pepsi max at the time and spat it all over my Wii when I heard how rocking the tune was . But thanks for sharing your stories
@@OldMusicFan83 I loved my 11th grade art class. There was this hot little cheerleader in my class. We teased and flirted w eachother but since I was a long haired freak, we both knew we were never going to date - we were from different worlds. I was 10 when this came out in 78'. It was the most amazing sounding band I had ever heard. To think this was their first album...so much talent and so much magic between these four guys.
Truly the greatest guitarist that ever lived. His tone, the way he plays the rhythm and leads. His guitar sounds like its singing the verse. His solo just crazy fire! That descending riff, choking that guitar into submission to give him the notes that makes this song ROCK, he' makes that guitar literally talk, cry and moan. Bad ass, Eddie. Just so BAD ASS. So blessed to have grown up in this era of music. Thank you EVH. Thank you.
I was so obsessed with this song back in the day. David and Michael singing back and forth and Michael hitting those high notes while hammering out that bass line. Alex playing drums like the hammer of the gods so good that Tone Loc sampled the opening drum line. Then there's Eddie out there making it cry and sing. One of the best songs on the album.
I still am obsessed after all these years ❤

Dave was the energy and style to make this band hip. Eddie was the gasoline for that fire. Eddie was the ultimate creative guitarist, still is to this day. Alex and eddie were always is syche, michael hell of a bassist, both jamies cryin and running with the devil are known for their incredible basslines. Van halen was a complete package, dave worked that stage like no one that time period, sexy but badass at the same time what he lacked in vocals he made up for in presentation. @Spermwhale1000 I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of you right now.
@Spermwhale1000 That's horrible, I'm so sorry for your loss. I hate to admit this but I actually tried to commit suicide once (about a year and a half ago) and listening to Van Halen was one of the main things that helped me get through it and slowly recover over several months. For that reason, I think the band (and Eddie in particular) really helped shape the person I am today, and I found Eddie's death so devastating not only because he was so talented and legendary, but because I feel a strong personal connection to his music after it helped me so much during an extremely dark time in my life. I agree with you 100%. It is hard to imagine a more sexual being than David Lee Roth. That is some hot stuff.
We need that in todays rock
Todd Craig ever heard of Robert Plant
Dave took up the gauntlet of Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, and other pioneers of *'holy shit, rock and roll is sexy, fun and dangerous and will probably piss off your authority figures...'*
I remember feeling a lot of this when I checked out some bands and concerts in my teens. It's a feeling of freedom. Today's music, man I just don't know. But some kids are checking out the old stuff.
I thought so until I watched and listened to him at three different concerts in the 1980's. Crappy stage behavior and demeanor, too high to sing well and generally insulting to his fans in attendance at the show, but the rest of the performers were good. DLR is today an idiot in full bloom and now withering. Like Madonna and many other even much younger "stars" he should hide out and just live normally til the end to shield himself from further embarrassment.
Rest in peace Eddie; thank you for giving us so many reasons to dance and sing.

however, I doubt this video was ever broadcast by MTV; this song is from 1978 and MTV first aired in 1981. And by then the style of musical videos had changed dramatically, to the point that this video would have been considered prehistory.
Its all to do with stealing real music and getting yes people to rap to it

Verdad!
Never know why people said Dave can't sing. I think he's great. Little sexy helps.
I say he can sing. But even if he couldn't he is one of the great pioneers of owning the song, confidence working the crowd, entertaining, & having that charisma. Many have called him a dick, but his being the frontman was one of the major selling points. & he actually has a great brain behind that fluff. Sammy may be praised as being better, but he would never work it like DLR.
Underdog I love Dave, but the live performances made me cringe sometimes. He was too focused on his on stage persona(which is great) over the singing unfortunately
Who the hell is saying that?
His voice has not held up to 4 decades of bluesy belting but he sounded pretty good back in the day.
I would take ANY VH Roth album over other ones. And yes, he brought the fun and the sexy crazy party vibe to the band's music, he was a hell of a unique VH front man and one many copied.

I wish Van Halen had kept this raw sound. Their albums after the second were too over-produced and polished. Their later albums were decent but their first two albums were classic.
Sad but true. "Women and Children First" was their last *great* LP, where *every* song was really something to hear. The rest were very good but not great like the first three.
