  • When you think of London transport - the black cab, red double decker bus and tube roundel spring to mind - but one of the most controversial methods of traversing the city is often overlooked - the Rickshaw.
Unregulated and unlicensed, they are often labelled a menace by cab drivers, local MPs and Transport for London.
But are they a dangerous and expensive nuisance, or just a fun way to see the city? IBTimes UK investigates.

      It's cheaper to get mugged.

At £10 a minute there is only one scumbag doing the mugging.

I would expect to pay more in a cab that can hold 5, London knowledge and have disabled access. Cheers..........I see no rip off, well other than the Uber drivers and the company paying little tax.

Is the General Secretary of the LTDA a joke representative? People don't tip up and fall out of them. "The problem is you can't licence a vehicle which is inherently dangerous". But don't taxis have a licence? The pollution produced by motorised vehicles is too high. It's dangerous. It kills. In central London, with average traffic speeds of around 10 mph, having rickshaws really isn't a problem.

Tipping over is a common thing? Well, as a guy that has a company with 4 pedicabs, that is news to me. I´ve NEVER heard of that.

    No pollution.
    Keeps obesity in check.
    Gives livelihood.
    Don't run-over people.
    Takes less space.
    What's the problem?...license?...are bicyclists licensed?

I’m a volunteer trained rickshaw rider for the elderly, they are incredibly safe, it’s the traffic and infrastructure that isn’t!

How not to be overcharged: AGREE the amount before hand. The feeling of being riden in a rickshaw is amazing! It feels good; the breeze on your face, people staring at you, you feel like wanting to shout to the world that nice feeling of being carried around, you don't want it to end.

They should be licensed and insured. Safety checked and maintained.
There should also be a code of practice as people are being ripped off.
We heard a tuk tuk rider quoting £100 to go from Oxford Street to Berkeley Square. It's 0.5 miles about a 10 minute walk.

Walk down Oxford St and you might get robbed. Get in a rickshaw and you guarantee that you get robbed. The Oxford St TV programme showed one trying to charge four girls £400 for a 20 minute ride. Easier than pickpocketing and seems to be the same group of people doing it!

To do anything about Rickshaws means increasing the size of government. Its up to folk to decide if Richshaws are safe and can be trusted.

Does anyone think that that Frodal guy should probably go back to working in a bank - he looks exhausted. This video would have been a great opportunity for him to say that statistically, riding in a Pedicab is safer than walking in London's streets. Bill the Odd ball Oddy suggests that they tip over all the time, this is simply not true. They never ever, ever tip over. When you put weight in the back they are solid. Just last week however a black cab smashed into a Russian tourist on Westminster Bridge, her brain was so badly damaged that she died there on the spot, blood everywhere. I haven't even mentioned that the walls of Westminster Cathedral were black because of diesel emissions - imagine what her lungs were like before she died. Anyway, what do I know!

Are you really trying to compare the mileage of a Rickshaw and Black Cabs??.............ohh come on.
If you all went tomorrow no one would miss you but we would Black Cabs. I would make you legal...............see how many you piss of then.
I was up the city and saw one family being ripped off. I just told them not to pay and walk off after giving the shit a £20.

I sense you don't like pedicabs there SCD4. I have operated pedicab businesses for 11 years and in 5 countries. I currently operate in Vancouver, Canada. I also run 2 other small logistics companies. I always consider a lesson I learned very early in business, and that is if you are in business, other businesses are not your competition -they are your allies in making money. The world of business works much better when we cooperate. I emigrated from Britain because my country is full of small-minded whinging know-it-alls who hate and despise their dirty little broken island and everything in it. I am really ashamed to come from a place that has no manners, and no tolerance for differences or individuality. Be cool man SCD4, and welcome to the world.

    • @SCD4
      @SCD4 Před 7 lety

You sense wrong, what I dont like is..........
How they operate in a large city like London. No or few lights, no clear pricing, no checks on the operator or the vehicle, no insurance. And a history of ripping off people.........Did you not read what I said before you tried with the insults. I said I would make them legal!
Your experience outside the UK means nothing. No one cares what you do in Canada. We are talking about a busy capital like London.
If that is small-minded, bad manners than you sound more of a fool than I first thought possible.
Be cool man, you are no Plato, just another of the great unwashed who thinks they have something to say when really everyone is just bored.
I am ashamed of people like you who talk the talk but are just a slave to the $ or any local currency at the expensive of other humans. People are not here to be used by the likes of you....all the while talking about tolerance, individuality. What dog-shit!!
PS: I love LONDON, when I am not in the Maldives. Welcome to the real world where we have rules for the safety of people and tourists and not for dirty bottom feeding, whinging know-it-all, low flies.
Welcome to the real world where grown ups have responsibilities.
" dirty little broken island and everything in it. "
Really??...........I was in Pembrokeshire a few months back Kayaking the National Park coast. If you are going to say silly things, you really should save them for your little mates who know, no better!! lmao

    • @pedicabtikki1346
      @pedicabtikki1346 Před 7 lety

So in the rest of the world where pedicabs operate, they are licensed, insured and they have lights. In NY city, pedicabs even have set fares posted on their sides - $4 a minute - set by the Mayor of New York. You can see my license requirements here at vancouver.ca/doing-business/pedicabs.aspx
The reason London doesn't have licenses and pedicab operators are forced to operate like they do, is because the Taxi association lobby the government. If City hall legitimise the pedicab industry, they would have to give them business licenses, taxi ranks and the protection of the police who look out for the safety of people......and businesses.
I do live in the most liveable city in the world, on the edge of the rocky mountains, and I don't know everything, but I do know that Pembrokeshire is in a different country to the one I was talking about.
Little joke for you STD4 ...How do you know when a plane load of English people has arrived? After they turn the engines off, you can still hear the whining.

The taxi business is much the same as the concrete business: they are all run by mafiosos and crooks. OF COURSE the taxis are going to protest! It´s profit out of their pockets.
